TCL demonstrates 4K gaming monitor with a 1,000 Hz refresh rate
  • It's pretty easy to discern refresh rate with the human eye if one tries. Just move your cursor back and forth really quickly. The number of ghost cursors in the trail it leaves behind (which btw only exist in perception by the human eye) is inversely proportional to the refresh rate.

  • oars (OpenAgeRatingsService) in appdata.xml files: why "sex-homosexuality"?
  • Yes that was clear to me. I was saying that, while I don't find same-sex content objectionable (indeed it makes me happy to see this kind of representation on screen), and I personally think it's something children should be exposed to, many people would disagree. Just like other tags on here which I think children shouldn't be exposed to at a young age but others wouldn't mind. Relative morality.

Politically speaking, I would be happier if those who oppose same-sex relationships were to change their minds. They pose a threat to my life. But FOSS is for everyone, even people I disagree with.

  • Volume
  • A rock concert emanating from a point will sound considerably louder at 5 feet vs 30 feet and will make just as much of a difference as 50 feet vs 300.

Of course, accoustics in a concert hall are designed to minimize this difference. Doesn't explain jet fighters though.

  • Volume
  • I hate decibels. Such needless confusion over whether they're an absolute or relative scale, what the reference volume is, what the underlying SI units are. Are these all measured at a uniform distance? Why would you take a shower at the library?

  • AI 'godfather' says universal basic income will be needed
  • He's not an economist, so I'd be healthily skeptical of this exact economic solution. You should however be very concerned about his opinions on where AI is going that it may necessitate this.

It's kind of curious that the headline here is "UBI" given that he mentions AI poses an extinction-level risk.

  • What possible, fundamental, misunderstanding of the nature of the universe could make current academics look like flat earthers?
  • I guess I would have called them "bad scientists" -- scientists who are bad at their job and hold everyone back. But still scientists.

For instance they correctly applied the scientific method in most other cases. They just were blind to or intentionally obstructive to certain things.

I try my best to be rational and apply Bayes' theorem now and then, but I am sure I am still missing some invisible monsters which will make me look arrogant or foolish in the future. I don't experiment much with software I am unfamiliar with, even if it could improve things at work. I do now and then of course, but should I allocate more time to trying new things? Yeah probably, but I don't, and my job still gets done.

  • Eclipse-watchers: looking at 99.9% totality is unsafe!
web.archive.org Total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024

On April 8, 2024, part of Canada will observe a total solar eclipse. When the Moon aligns perfectly between Earth and the Sun, many spectators will be plunged into temporary darkness.

Total solar eclipse of April 8, 2024

    Safety tips:

    • Only use special eclipse glasses; regular sunglasses aren't safe
    • Wait for 100% totality before taking off your eclipse glasses. (If you don't have eclipse glasses, wait for totality before looking at all)
    • Have a timer prepared on your phone set to the duration of the eclipse at your location, so you know when to put your glasses back on.
    • When the sun is mostly (but not fully) eclipsed, it will likely not feel painful to look at it, but it will still damage your eyes permanently.
