[Weekly thread] How are you doing with your communities?
  • I have essentially given up on the one and only community I created. I opened !engineering@sh.itjust.works when I first came to Lemmy, and did my best to regularly post interesting things. It was really exciting when I hit 500 subscribers, too! Unfortunately, I ran out of steam before the community took off. I also moved my time and attention elsewhere. At this point c/engineering is dead unless someone else picks up the baton.

Sorry for the rant. But it felt good to get that out.

  • I had to Google it. Mr. Pembrose is the eyeball lying on the couch. Lacking a body, he is physically incapable of doing anything. That's why he's angry at the world: he exists but can barely participate in existence.

  • I'm not sure I get the joke. Is it simply the dissonance of a butcher shop being named after a children's story?

  • Relics of Mary Magdalene
  • Collecting body parts goes back centuries. For example, embedded within every sanctified altar in every Catholic church is a relic from a saint. The first-class (most desirable) relics are body parts.

Private ownership of saints' relics used to be expressly forbidden. AFAIK it is now simply heavily discouraged. So you might have trouble making a business out of it, unless you can convince the church that you are legit.

And good luck getting permission to authenticate any of the existing ones. God specifically said you're not supposed to put Him to the test.

  • LaserDisc
  • Big 90's nostalgia right there. I remember my friend's dad bought a laser disc player for their giant rear projection TV. We watched Top Gun and it was the most awesome thing ever.

  • What good things are going on with your weekend?
  • Yeah. I love water!

  • What good things are going on with your weekend?
  • Swimming! The summer heat is here (it was 98F/36C today) and the neighborhood pool is open, so there is no better place to be in the afternoons.

  • Some days it'll be like that, take 2
  • I'm sure it's been years. I tell myself I maintain my bikes well, but I'll be honest: I usually ride it 'till something breaks. I was asking for this one.

  • Some days it'll be like that, take 2

I lost four spokes on my morning commute when the chain decided to jump off the big cog. Of course I don't have a spoke protector. (Who needs a dork disc? Bad things won't happen if you keep your bike maintained. /s) I was lucky to skid to a stop rather than crash when the rear wheel locked up.

PSA: keep a few zip ties in your repair kit.

    Happy midsummer!
  • Happy midsummer!

I visited Sweden years ago. On the trip I was invited to join a family's midsummer party. It was lots of fun!

I hope I can go back some day. It's a fantastic country.

  • Whale fall

    >A whale fall occurs when the carcass of a whale has fallen onto the ocean floor, typically at a depth greater than 1,000 m (3,300 ft), putting them in the bathyal or abyssal zones. On the sea floor, these carcasses can create complex localized ecosystems that supply sustenance to deep-sea organisms for decades.

    stargazing app?
  • I like Sky Map. Originally developed by Google, open-sourced in 2012.

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sky_Map

  • Trying to buy right size bicycle wheel online
  • Competing standards and clueless sellers are bad, and then the tire marketing makes things even worse.

    Marketed for road? That's 700c.
    Marketed for mountain? That's 29".
    Marketed for ebikes? That's 28".

But all three tires fit on the same 622mm diameter rim.

  • Advice needed on buying a personal boat
  • This is the answer right here. Hook up with a local sailing club and take classes. If you love it, make friends with other sailors and rent the club's boats.

If there's interesting stuff to see near shore, and the tides are manageable, then kayaking is also great. It's cheap and easy to get into, and great exercise.

Buddhist flag spotted in the wild

I didn't expect to see this in the rural western US.

Please pardon the water drops in the image. I was shooting through a car window.

A better picture of the flag is on Wikipedia: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buddhist_flag

This three-sided pole on an airport tram

I had never seen one of these before today. They're great. Way better than reaching for a single pole in a crowded car and wrapping your hand around some stranger's fingers. And If you have the whole thing to yourself you can hook your arm through it.

    What are your weather limits?

I was excited to ride to work today in the sunny spring weather. Then I saw the wind forecast. No thank you, I'll pass. I ride directly into the wind on my commute home, and am completely exposed the whole way.

Edit: For people who use proper units, 43 miles/hour is 69 km/hour.

[Meta] What do you think of migrating to c/map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz?

What do the users in this community think about possibly migrating over to !map_enthusiasts@sopuli.xyz and locking this community? While there's nothing wrong with having multiple communities for a topic, I feel like a consolidated community would be more fun and possibly get more overall engagement. And !mapporn@lemmy.world is clearly the quieter of the two based on the number of posts and active users.

I'm curious to hear your opinions!
