  • I like Sky Map. Originally developed by Google, open-sourced in 2012.

  • Trying to buy right size bicycle wheel online
  • Competing standards and clueless sellers are bad, and then the tire marketing makes things even worse.

    Marketed for road? That's 700c.
    Marketed for mountain? That's 29".
    Marketed for ebikes? That's 28".

But all three tires fit on the same 622mm diameter rim.

  • Advice needed on buying a personal boat
  • This is the answer right here. Hook up with a local sailing club and take classes. If you love it, make friends with other sailors and rent the club's boats.

If there's interesting stuff to see near shore, and the tides are manageable, then kayaking is also great. It's cheap and easy to get into, and great exercise.

  • What popular product do you think is modern day snakeoil?
  • Homeopathics, though sometimes even a placebo can have beneficial effects.

  • Need help routing the cable on my Shimano Deore XT front derailleur (FD-M739) [SOLVED]
  • I think you're doing it right. The frame and derailleur both look like they are set up for top-pull cable routing. The manual you referenced is describing a bottom-pull setup, hence the confusion. You should only need to get the cable tension correct.

  • I discovered porn on my dad's computer
  • I don't have any good advice, but I can relate. As a kid you only get one (very limited) view of your parents. Over time these awkward but eye-opening moments happen where you have to realize they are normal people, too.

If you really want some fun, hang out with your parents' old friends and ask them for stories. You might learn more about your folks than you expect (or want).

  • Did you hear about the guy who lost his left arm and left leg in a tragic accident?
  • Yeah. Though now that you mention it, I never found out the name of his other leg.

  • I know a guy who addresses his wife as Woman. It started as a joke and stuck. She loves it. When he needs to get her attention in a public place he just shouts, "Woman!" and she cheerfully responds. It gets great reactions from people who don't know.

  • If a useful brain-computer interface was available sometimes in your lifetime (and secure and safe) would you get one?
  • Despite my best efforts to get away from computers, I still find myself attached to them in one way or another during most of my waking hours. Lemmy is my computer time that acts as a mental break from other computer time. Connecting in an even more intimate way sounds horrible.

  • Where to find a preload adjuster/cap for Rockshox Dart 3?
  • This is a total shot in the dark, but maybe you could use a preload adjuster from another coil-sprung fork with the same stanchion size. Maybe even from a different manufacturer, since they would likely use the same thread. You could take a $10 gamble on a Suntour preload adjuster:

You might also try eBay or AliExpress. Sometimes they have obscure odds and ends. Like this kit of Dart parts that includes a knob labeled "preload":

  • What was your first operating system or Linux Distribution?
  • Apple DOS on an Apple IIe in school.

    First Linux distro was Debian.

  • frame mounted front bike rack
  • Maybe try Wald?

Depending on what mounting points your bike has, you could also get a "porteur" style front rack with a large platform, and then attach a separate basket. That would probably cost more than the Wald baskets but might be stronger for carrying heavy loads. See the Specialized and Old Man Mountain "pizza racks" for example. Soma, Surly, and Nitto also make racks like that.

Edit: nevermind, I completely missed that you want the basket mounted to the frame and not the fork.

  • Are niche pillows and cases worth it?
  • I was rougher on pillows back then.

There's a story here, I just know it.

Buddhist flag spotted in the wild

I didn't expect to see this in the rural western US.

Please pardon the water drops in the image. I was shooting through a car window.

A better picture of the flag is on Wikipedia:

This three-sided pole on an airport tram

I had never seen one of these before today. They're great. Way better than reaching for a single pole in a crowded car and wrapping your hand around some stranger's fingers. And If you have the whole thing to yourself you can hook your arm through it.

    What are your weather limits?

I was excited to ride to work today in the sunny spring weather. Then I saw the wind forecast. No thank you, I'll pass. I ride directly into the wind on my commute home, and am completely exposed the whole way.

Edit: For people who use proper units, 43 miles/hour is 69 km/hour.

[Meta] What do you think of migrating to c/

What do the users in this community think about possibly migrating over to ! and locking this community? While there's nothing wrong with having multiple communities for a topic, I feel like a consolidated community would be more fun and possibly get more overall engagement. And ! is clearly the quieter of the two based on the number of posts and active users.

I'm curious to hear your opinions!
