Why is pure oxygen called O2 when oxygen is an element?
  • I don't know if anyone is interested but there would be more versions too. Solid oxygen (red oxygen) at high pressure used to be thought of as O4, tetraoxygen aka oxozone. But if you look at it with x-ray crystallography it's O8, octaoxygen. Cool huh

  • Should we decide to have a main fediverse community or should we keep posting everything twice?
  • This is the best answer that we should strive towards. Deduplication and community combining. Deduplication is hard but a lot of other places have been attempting it for years so methods have already come a long way. Community combining could be done through partnered aggregation and tagging of communities

  • I am LOVING Baldurs Gate 3
  • It can be enjoyed casually solo or with close family like a girlfriend or teenage kids. But with friends you need to schedule long sessions because it's a huge game. It has 3 difficulties: explorer, balanced and tactician. So a solo explorer play through could be done casually in 30 minute chunks. You might have to pause mid combat during longer fights but it has quick save so you can finish it later.

  • One year in, U.S. climate law is already turbocharging clean energy technology
  • I was under the impression that once carbon passed about 400ppm in atmosphere then climate change was irreversible. Which it reached a few years ago. It's a greenhouse gas so it lowers the rate at which heat escapes. We would have to start actively capturing carbon for global cooling to occur. Not just turbocharge clean energy. We could use 100% solar today and the planet would still get warmer

  • Is the blockchain an interesting innovation, aside from cryptocurrencies ?
  • I haven't been able to quite figure it out. But I keep having this idea that blockchain would be really good for journaling and validating elections. I haven't been able to solve how you handle both anonymity and spam bots simultaneously because you can only give each person one vote. But the concept of peer 2 peer journaling sounds perfect for handling trust

  • Not even playing on a screen. I can close my eyes and visualise apples in a pack at the super market. I can imagine myself tearing the pack open, I can see the apple in level 1 detail of the OP. I can inspect it, it's green with yellowish spotsand imperfections, a black and brown stem, it has a waxy smoothness and I can visualise myself lifting my arm and taking a bite. The next part I lose vision, I can imagine feeling it on my front teeth before taking a bite. Its not a physical feeling, but like a memory of the feeling. And I can imagine taking that bite and then moving the piece to my right cheek to chew. On the first bite with my molars it cuts through the apple flesh but not the skin. Further chewing is required. Now I kindve lose imagination of the texture but the taste I can imagine that sweet acidic taste of apples. And that's about it figuratively speaking

  • The temperature in China hit 52.2°C (126°F)
  • This might be because we're in an ill niño weather event. This brings hot coast to the southern hemisphere particularly South America. And it means the North is cooler particularly north Europe and Canada. This will flip back and forth over the years

  • I think I would take monarchy over whatever this corpo hellscape is. At least a monarch can be overthrown. How can you overthrow a multi-national corporation?
  • I will say I'm the UK we still have a king that we couldn't physically overthrow although we could possibly remove them constitutionally if the democracy aligned in that direction. However we do still have amazon here.

I think the difference between UK and US for workers rights comes from how we treat lobbying differently.
