RE: Is Ernest still here?
  • I hope Ernest gets well soon and can pass through all of these stuff, but I must add one point to this:

And finally, I really suggest getting some more admins for the instance.

And, as important as this, letting more people help with Kbin development.

It's impossible to maintain the code and develop new features, while dealing with all his personal life problems (which of course are a priority) and maintaining the instance all at once and almost alone.

Why not getting some help? I know that Ernest already said he has a problem trusting people, but come on, it's visible that this approach is not working and it’s not benefiting anyone.

  • What's your favorite sleeping technique?
  • Lights out and Kindle with the lowest luminosity posible. I can't barely read 10 pages.

  • Your washing machine could be sending 3.7 GB of data a day — LG washing machine owner disconnected his device from Wi-Fi after noticing excessive outgoing daily data traffic
  • So you can manually put your laundry inside it, go to your bed and tell the machine to wash it like you didn't had to get up to put your laundry inside it.

  • Maybe the reason wild dogs were domesticated is because they needed someone to scratch inside their ears
  • Of course, that's a good reminder! But according to my dog's vet, it shouldn't be a problem if done cautious, not frequently, not going deep and with a gauze around your finger. She do it sometimes including to see if there's anything causing the itch by the color left on the gauze.

EDIT: I'm not a vet, so if I'm wrong, someone please correct me! Just saying this according to what my dog's vet said.

  • If the real world worked like Pokémon, what animal would evolve into what animal?
  • For sure guinea pigs would evolve into capybaras

  • Maybe the reason wild dogs were domesticated is because they needed someone to scratch inside their ears

It's deeply pleasuring to scratch inside your ears and of course dogs can't do it. Probably anyone would accept to be domesticated just to feel this pleasure too!

avatars and usernames should be bigger so it's easier to grow a sense of community
  • Since you mentioned "forum days", I'm still wondering when did we decided we should get rid of those blinking gifs with our usernames we used as a signature for every post! I hate them, but I also miss them...

  • Threads will allow you to follow Mastodon users by year-end, according to Meta meeting details | TechCrunch
  • Oh, I tried to say that I can see and even follow this Threads account, so probably Kbin is still federated! Sorry if it wasn't clear

  • Threads will allow you to follow Mastodon users by year-end, according to Meta meeting details | TechCrunch
  • Well, if you're right, Kbin looks to not have defederated Threads

  • Threads will allow you to follow Mastodon users by year-end, according to Meta meeting details | TechCrunch
  • Is there any way for me to know if a Kbin instance also blocked Threads?

  • What's your favorite piece of bullshit advice?
  • do what you love and you will never work a day love anything in your life

  • Getting braces as a young adult?
  • I had the same thoughts when my dentist suggested it, but fortunately nowadays we have more choices for doing it.

I don't know where you live and how much you can expend in it, but I've decided to use these removable invisible aligners (like Invisalign) and had no regrets. They're faster to do their job, more trustable to get the alignment you need and, well, they're not too visible as regular braces.

As other people said, correcting your teeth is something you will enjoy for the rest of your life. So, if you can afford invisible aligners and can follow their instructions (like using them for 20h per day, regularly brushing your teeth etc), I totally recommend going this way.

Besides what method you'll choose, remember that everyone of them is temporary and you'll be really happy with the results in the near future. I get the concern about what other people will think, but you should remember you're doing something for you and to feel happier with yourself! :)

  • I need an app to replace my work notebook
  • That's exactly my point, specially because when I started making my daily planner for work it helped a lot with my ADHD, so the point is to find something to help even more! Thank you very much!

  • I need an app to replace my work notebook
  • Kind of confused by wanting handwriting recognition while not using a pen? Are you writing with your finger?

Hahahaha you have a good point and I'm sorry I didn't explained that before! For now, yes, I'm writing with my finger!

I'm taking a look to see if I'll get used to taking notes and planning my day with my tablet before expending money in a pen that I'd only use for this.

Also, thanks for the recommendation! I tried Good Notes but I think the handwriting recognition is a paid feature. I will take a look if there's a trial!

  • I need an app to replace my work notebook

So I'm willing to replace my physical notebook for my Samsung Galaxy Tab 5, but I'm having trouble finding the exactly app for me.

I need a note taking app with basically 2 features:

    1. Convert handwrite to text
    2. Ability to select the page background (I want to use a daily template that I've already made)

I doesn't expect it to be free, but it would be nice for an app that, at least, offer a free trial.

And it'd be nice if it could sync between devices, specially with my Mac.

    Any suggestions?

    \--

    EDIT:

I saw a lot of people telling about Samsung Notes, but the handwrite to text conversion simply doesn't exist for me. I think it's probably because I'm (still) not using a pen.

Another option would be using the Gboard handwriting feature, but I didn't get used to it. I prefer writing directly at the place that the text needs to be.

Mbin is a fork of kbin: a decentralized content aggregator running on the Fediverse network
  • Oh, thanks for showing the other side! Like always, things are not just black and white.
I have never heard about Melroy before, but I was scared by the last comment. It's nice to hear that there are nice people working on this branch :)

  • Mbin is a fork of kbin: a decentralized content aggregator running on the Fediverse network
  • That makes sense!

For my basic knowledge working side by side with a lot of devs, I totally agree with the way Ernest thinks. It's essential for a product that's growing up to have a solid core that will not need to be rewrote in the near future.

But also, as an user, I keep wishing we could see more features, like the API for mobile apps.

I mean, besides what Ernest and Melroy thinks that's the right way, there's also what the users need, what the users want and what the project needs to escalate (new features vs core rewriting). And probably there's not a right answer for that.

  • Mbin is a fork of kbin: a decentralized content aggregator running on the Fediverse network
  • Honest question: what's the reason to make a fork instead of contributing do kbin itself?

  • Firefox for Android context menu editing
  • Thanks for explaining!
Now I know it's almost like they're asking for me to uninstall their app!

  • No thanks, I'll just tap my guitar instead.
  • Same here! Many years ago I paid for a lifetime subscription and I really don't regret it (but only because it was an one-time payment for life).

    Kbin notifications

After some time missing an app, I managed to really like Kbin even on my browser, specially with some mods (my favourites are Kbin Usability Pack and Kbin Subscriptions Panel), but I really miss notifications for interactions on my posts and comments.

I think that this would almost solve my problem of don't having an app. Does anyone else feel the same?

Is there any place I can see a changelog of Kbin's updates?

I saw that the test instances have some nice new features that are not still released for kbin.social.

So I was thinking that it'd be nice to know when things are being updated here and what have changed. Is there any place I can see this?

    Kbin upvote vs Lemmy upvvote

I already understood that, for now, the Kbin upvote not really upvote a post/comment and to do so, I need to boost it.

But, how do Lemmy (and possibly other sites from Fediverse) deal with this difference?

For example: If I boost a Lemmy post in Kbin, it'll count as an upvote on Lemmy? Or do I need to upvote it when it's a cross-post from another Fediverse? And how does Lemmy understand a boost in post at Kbin? Also, if someone at Lemmy upvote my post in Kbin, it'll count as an upvote or as a boost?
