Recommend me a plant for a present
  • Of course!

    • Rojo congo - deep color, can really grow to be a real beast with thick stems and big leaves
    • Black cardinal - even darker, glossy leaves
    • Billietiae - can be expensive, but the stem color, leaf shape and texture is super cool. Philodendrons atabapoense and 69686 are two others along the same vein; expensive, but unique leaf shapes
    • Brasil - can be hung and treated similarly to a pothos if you want a companion for it. Philodendron neon is another one that is nice hanging and the color is really bright!
  • Recommend me a plant for a present
    • Philodendrons - first one that came to mind, so many varieties! The care has been really similar to monsteras for me.
    • Hoya - agree with the other poster’s suggestion! I think a hoya would look nice next to your tradescantia, and there are so many interesting types. Plus they might flower if you’re lucky!
    • ZZ plant - a bit of a different shape/growth pattern from what you have and quite low maintenance
    • Peperomia - a more compact suggestion and somehow very giftable imo!
  • If it applies to you, how did you engage with the instinct that drug-based treatment would make you not feel your real feelings?
  • What makes you feel that your current state is what you "really feel"? Who decides that? I tend to feel the opposite way; that my currently depressed, anxious self isn't the "real" me, and that any treatment I seek- whether through therapy or medication- is just a course-correction so that I can move closer to reality. Maybe it would help to reframe it that way? When you challenge your thought patterns and work on developing healthier ones, you are making changes but you aren't changing who you are, nor are you denying reality. Medication is just another tool/aid in the same way that therapy is.

It might be helpful to talk to your therapist about why you're worried about losing access to your current feelings. How are they serving you right now?

Maybe you'll find it comforting to consider that antidepressants generally aren't that powerful and aren't likely to change your mental state to the point I think you're worried about. Anecdotally, I've been on a variety of antidepressants; some made me feel worse physically, some made me feel worse mentally, some had absolutely no effect, and some have made me feel better or more functional but in subtle ways. I'm currently on medication that isn't the cure I'd hoped it'd be, but has enough of a positive effect that it's worthwhile for me. Not saying that medication is for everyone, but I hope hearing others' experiences helps you make the right decision for yourself!

  • My landlord wants my potted plant gone :(
  • Your reply was spot-on. In what world are plants considered "seasonal and holiday decoration"?

I hate overbearing landlords and HOAs like these, what miserable people. As long as it's not a hazard or obnoxious who gives a crap? On a plant-related note, my parents once got a written notice because they were planting flowers and had a bag of soil under the bench on their front porch. It couldn't have been there more than a few hours but apparently it was too much of an eyesore for the community. 🙄

I hope they leave you alone after this.

  • What's your favorite platform for buying shows and movies digitally?
  • I use Cheap Charts in conjunction with Movies Anywhere to take advantage of whatever sales there are across different platforms and to hopefully keep my small collection as platform agnostic as possible. For movies that aren't eligible, I stick to iTunes as my main service.

  • What's the best Xmas gift you've ever got?
  • A Wacom Graphire tablet! This was in the early 2000’s, and my friends pooled their money to get it for me because they knew I liked to draw. I made graphics for all of my clubs and orgs and then ended up working as an illustrator through college and beyond. I used the original tablet until it broke and then moved on to the Intuos. I actually don’t draw anymore but that was definitely one of the most thoughtful and well-used gifts I’ve gotten.
