I thought I was alone
  • You're remembering correctly. That's how the first character dies in Dreamcatcher. Stephen King was recovering from a car accident and was on oxy when he wrote the book if that helps explain anything.

  • Antivax quacks are continuing to make up fantastical biological mechanisms for COVID-19 vaccine “shedding”
  • They're terrified of the mRNA vaccine. Because they're incurious about science, they think it's brand new, like invented just for this virus. Try telling them that the delivery mechanism has been around for awhile and scientists have been working on this vaccine since SARS and all they do is cover their ears and hum louder.

  • Michigan Jails banned visits in “quid pro quo” with prison phone companies, lawsuits say
  • In the US, if you're in jail, you have to make phone calls through whatever provider the jail uses. These are private companies and charge a lot of money to the family just to talk to their loved one. A quid pro quo is a reward or advantage in return for something. In this case, the jails receive extra money for letting certain phone companies be the only ones prisoners can use. By preventing in person visits, they are lining their pockets with even more money. It's disgusting.

  • Health experts plead for unvaxxed Americans to get measles shot as cases rise
  • Go to your doctor or pharmacist and tell them that you aren't sure. They'll probably just recommend getting a booster. I got all my childhood vaccines (except chickenpox because it wasn't required when I was a kid) and my doctor still recommended a booster just to be sure.

As an aside, you should be sure to get your tetanus booster every ten years as well.

  • Rational Self Interest
  • I'm glad other people are aware of this. I used to post about her infatuation with that butcher every time I saw her name come up on Reddit. It makes me happy to see other people doing the same.

  • What character that is potrayed as a super genius in media felt like an idiot to you ?
  • Hbomberguy made a video about it. There's no nuance or foreshadowing in that Sherlock. He exists just so Moffat can feel smart that he knows something the audience can't possibly know yet, nor does he give them a chance to figure it out.

Nikki Haley: Texas has the right to secede from the United States if it wants to
  • Here. Basically, some people carved out a territory and lived as a republic for fourteen years, despite no formal recognition. They were negotiating to rejoin Quebec, until the British had to go and surrender at Yorktown.

  • [Moldy Monday] I Have Friends Rule
  • That's because all the conservative Christians either got kicked out, fled, or otherwise ended up in the New World a few centuries ago. They really lean into the prosperity gospel nowadays as well, which is all kinds of problematic.

  • Is QAnon still a thing?
  • Q would leave breadcrumbs, because he needed to be as vague as possible to sound like he knew what was going to happen, right? The people who would interpret those breadcrumbs were called bakers. Yes, I know breadcrumbs are from bread that's already been baked, but that's what they decided to call themselves to create an Us vs Them feel. So the "bread" in this image means there are things to be interpreted or reinterpreted yet.

  • A thought experiment about SEAL Team 6 goes terribly, terribly wrong
  • They don't care and/or they're cheering this on. Most of his supporters are either on a holy crusade and see Trump as God's anointed or they see politics and this country as a game they must win at all costs. As long as he continues to hurt the right people, neither group will give a shit.
