I built a smart mailbox
  • This is great. I tried putting a shock sensor in my metal mailbox which is attached to my building and couldn’t get the signal to reach. This is a whole other level of advanced work!

  • Streaming Services, need a new map!
  • This sub gets butthurt about paid services except for usenet.

Have you checked out stremio + real debrid? Have to have a computer connected but it works well and is dirt cheap.

I pay for IPTV and Emby services. This community will hate emby for not being FOSS but it has a better user experience than jellyfin IMO. There is not a great place to find them unfortunately.

  • Google confirms Gmail is “here to stay” amid speculation over plans to scrap the email service
  • It takes a little bit of effort but it’s a great time to do the following:

    • get a password manager if you don’t have one already. I like 1password
    • get an alias service. Proton bought simplelogin so it’s integrated, there’s also anonaddy
    • gradually work through updating your online accounts from your old gmail to new aliases for each account (eg ebay@alias.domain.com) and set a complex password through your password manager that’s unique for each account

In a couple months you’ll eventually stop receiving emails to your gmail as you work through the accounts you use, and most incoming mail will all be through aliases. Then if you get spammed, you know what site leaked your email + you can turn off the alias and not get spam.

  • Fastest servers?

I recently learned some of the NYC Wireguard servers are 1gbps, tested it out and turned out to be true. Any other tricks like this to know/locations that are faster than others?

I'm new to networking and self-hosting and have no idea where to start.
  • You already have a pihole. I assume you like it. You could buy a cheap minipc/NUC and set up proxmox on it and learn to set up and configure a second pihole as a virtual machine. Then you'll have a server running with the ability to expand as needed. You could look into setting up new network gear (like tp-link's omada) and run the software controller in a VM. Or you could dabble with HomeAssistant and get into smarthome. Or set up a photo management tool like Immich. Like others have said, find a problem you want to solve and use these tools!

  • Your ads dont work here, brand!
  • 10 years is a pretty good run for an SD card.. was it an endurance SD? That’s what I’m running. Fried a non-endurance one in under a year, replaced it with an endurance and reduced log writing frequency with some config change and have been cruising for 3-4 years so far.

  • Where to find soon-to-be-defunct GCN+ streaming content?

None of the documentaries from GCN+, which is Global Cycling Network's streaming app, are on my usual torrent sites. I'm not a cool warez kiddy with access to niche private trackers. Is it possible that there are no webrips out there? Do they watermark somehow?

When my boradband provider says "Unlimited usage" do they really mean "Unlimited" or is it only X amount?
  • Do you mean home ISP or mobile provider? What country? Who is the provider? In the US, some ISPs (especially those with monopoly) charge after ~1-1.5TB/month which is complete bullshit (fuck you comcast who was hated so much by consumers they rebranded to xfinity)

  • Now that Plex is dead, where to find servers/what platform?

My good ol 2+ year Plex server host has been banned again. I have given up on this, I do not have access to an obscure server with few customers that will avoid future bans.

What's the platform of choice moving forward? Need wife-approval factor. Emby and Jellyfin? Where can I source servers? Reddit has made these hard to find and I haven't found a good community here.
