  • A good idea? There's always risk, no matter if you're an expert with a 100% success rate. My heart pounds every time I flash a device, new BIOS update, install Linux, etc., despite having done those things many times.

That said, I flashed Graphene on an older Pixel, and they make the entire process stupid easy, provided you can read. They have a web installer where you just install a couple of prerequisites on the host computer, put your phone in recovery mode, plug in your device, and click buttons in order via your browser. No need to transfer image files, muck around in TWRP recovery, or anything like that. It uses some Google API to facilitate everything.

But if you can't afford the loss of the device to the unlikely but still possible event of a bad flash, either because of cost or loss of utility, you should at least take a moment to consider your backup plans before proceeding. Only you can decide if you think the risk is worth it and sufficiently low.

  • The other twist is, unlike Xitter, you don't have to create an account on Mastodon to be able to read their feed. You can access it like any other website. So nobody is getting shut out. They're just posting elsewhere, where anyone can read it.

  • While the calls from Moolenaar could be the first inkling of a possible congressional crackdown, Ross Burley — a co-founder of the nonprofit Centre for Information Resilience — warned that DeepSeek's emergence in the U.S. raises data security and privacy issues for users.

Yeah, because it's just soooo much better to have American plutocrats slurping up our data without consent and getting to do whatever they want with impunity. /s

"What they'll use it for is behavior change campaigns, disinformation campaigns, for really targeted messaging as to what Western audiences like, what they do," he added.

Yeah, because it's just soooo much better to have American plutocrats doing every single one of those things and more in the name of Profit. /s

    Our leaders are hilariously tone-deaf.

  • Not that the author is necessarily off-base, but that blog post is almost three years old. Tech and software evolve fast, and I would hazard a guess that at least a few of their gripes have been addressed by now. Additionally, due partly to the success of the Steam Deck, Valve has officially partnered with Arch and it's throwing some of their considerable resources into Linux development.

I also noticed that they barely mentioned SELinux or AppArmor, and they probably didn't know about immutable distros (which didn't really exist, yet). It's fair to say that Linux isn't the gold standard of good security, but the post reads like someone with a beef and not someone trying to inform by presenting a skeptic's take (indeed, they seem to gush over Windows and MacOS).

They finish by name-dropping a few people with a vested interest in security, and they're practically begging the question in doing so. If the facts don't stand on their own as the author has presented, why should I listen to strangers who allegedly share the same opinion? That's not how consensus is formed.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, an old article about the state of Linux Security should be assessed within a modern context if we're to apply it to current software.

  • If the Deepseek reveal is any indication, I don't think the plutocrats are prepared. They've been wasting money buying politicians and strangling the rest of us for so long that unlike the late 1940s, there's no base to the economy anymore and no protective structure to invigorate it. The middle class is all but hollowed out, and the majority of people are a financial crisis away from bankruptcy.

If people can band together as communities, though, they'll make it. If others keep up with this "us" and "them" bullshit, they'll crumble.

  • I mean, if they're forcing 2FA at all, that's a good thing, but they still have the usual TOTP and hardware key options.

Anyway, I understand why people would want to host their own vault file. Just remember that obfuscation (i.e. being the only one who knows where your vault is) isn't a viable security method. Removing access to potential thieves is.

  • Yeah, and like I said, it's not impossible.

At the cynical end, there's still business owners that recognize that having a slew of sick employees is bad for their bottom line, so even if the federal government does nothing, various businesses alongside the humanitarian groups will flex whatever influence they have to ensure governors, etc. do what needs to be done.

  • This is true, but it's worth recognizing that a lot of the states, nonprofits, and local agencies rely on government studies and reports to make their own assessments.

With the government staying silent, it's going to be more difficult to get a sense of what's happening and what to do as a result. Not impossible, but the infrastructure isn't necessarily in place, because nobody prepared for the federal government to be this adversarial to public health and safety.

  • And if that thought doesn't come out right now, it will be lost forever. Or I can try to hold onto it, but I will not hear anything you've said, due to the mental effort required to hold onto a single thought.

  • I'm not going to pretend to understand Spain's politics or economy, but it would behoove a lot of countries' governments to start acting in the interests of their citizens vis a vis the looming disasters caused by climate change, rather than capitulating to wealthy special interests.

The main reason the far right is having a moment across the globe is because they're tapping into that simmering fear and frustration as people watch their allegedly democratic institutions fail them, one by one, over and over. And the existing institutions are acting like everything is fine—business as usual.

It's not fine. Most people can't just buy a new home when theirs gets destroyed by flooding, fires, storms, etc. They can't just move. The far right is only going to make things worse, but they're promising people some kind of change (and hoping people don't look too hard), whereas current institutions are promising more of the same and expecting people to just be patient as we pass each climate-disaster milestone.

  • You're not missing much. The author rambles for many, many paragraphs, and I don't use that word lightly. It reads like a college essay, where the goal is to produce an X-page paper, so they just cram as many quotes, attributions, and subjects as they can to pad the length.

It feels like they're trying to go for a Pulitzer, but it's just reactionary garbage that rambles on and on, jumping from topic to topic, taking quotes from scientists and philosophers from antiquity—as if their ideas were still valid today simply because they once existed. The author appears to have a lack of attention, methinks...

Also they appear to be an ADHD denialist, so fuck them.

It's penultimate, because I need to get an active cooler for the NVME drive nestled above the GPU, but otherwise, this build is basically in its final form.

What's the proper etiquette with multiple-day contractors?

My SO and I have some contractors coming out to install new windows throughout our home. They will be here for around two days.

SO says that when they were growing up in the Deep South, it was expected that you would provide lunch for the workers if it was a multi-day job. Is that still a thing? What's the proper etiquette in Texas?

Had to upgrade my CPU cooler. Found this comparison of the heights of the Phantom Spirit 120 SE vs Normal/EVO.

    cross-posted from: https://reddthat.com/post/32123809

My Big Shuriken 3 isn't really sufficient for my new 5700X3D, even with undervolting, so I'm upgrading to the Phantom Spirit 120 SE. I've seen elsewhere that some people claim that the SE and the Normal/EVO versions are the same height, and the 154mm height noted by Thermalright is coldplate to fin.

Well, here's what seems to me to be definitive proof that the SE is indeed shorter than its capped siblings. The 154mm seems to be coldplate to pipe tip. Note that this is not my image; I'm just sharing for anyone's future reference.

The new cooler will be going into an NR200 (non-P, non-Max), and it will be paired with the aforementioned CPU on a Gigabyte B550I Aorus Pro AX. It seems to be the same overall shape and tower offset as the Peerless Assassin, so I'm expecting it to fit similarly. Will post pictures when everything is installed and working.

A Letter From the Editor (of The Devil's Panties, a webcomic mostly about mortgages apparently)

A brilliant, introspective summary of how single-issue voting got us here and how it won't save anyone.

The system sucks, but please, be pragmatic. Vote for Harris, hold the Dems accountable, and donate to STAR and Ranked Choice Voting initiatives in your area to avoid this dilemma in the future.

Twenty years ago, I made a choice that left the world a distorted echo of what it could be.

Twenty years from now, you too will reap what you sow.

At a campaign event over the weekend in Fort Worth, Texas, hundreds of Allred’s supporters broke out in raucous applause when he vowed to protect a woman’s right to an abortion. “When I’m in the Senate, we’re going to restore Roe v. Wade,” Allred said.

Please vote, y'all. There's more at stake than just a presidency.

State constitutional rights to abortion are on the ballot in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Nevada, and South Dakota.

Idaho, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Wisconsin have initiatives on the ballot to ban noncitizens from voting. It's already illegal, but the initiatives will probably be used to harass and disenfranchise minorities and activists, if they pass.

Colorado, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, D.C., Alaska, and Missouri will vote to adopt or prohibit ranked choice voting.

Alaska, California, Massachusetts, and Missouri will vote to adopt a $15-18 minimum wage.

Will I need to overclock RAM again?

I'm saving up to get a 5700X3D around Christmas, upgrading from a 5600G, but I want to make sure I prepare properly before I do the swap.

The RAM I bought couldn't match the C18 @ 4000 M/Ts advertised and still remain stable, but I managed to manually overclock to C16 @ 3666. Should I drop to JDEC specs before I upgrade, or is it a non-issue?

Sanity check: Yubikeys and password shares

I've been thinking about getting a couple of Yubikeys for a partner and myself, but we share certain accounts. While I would love to have the Yubikey 5 that can store TOTP, that seems like it could be problematic for shared accounts.

Would using the cheaper Yubico Security Keys to unlock Bitwarden Premium vaults, that use a Shared Organization, be a better/more sane option than trying to sync up TOTP secrets every time a new shared account gets added? Any other critiques or suggestions?

In response to questions about why A&M discontinued the medical care, a university spokesperson said its growing student population and the resulting strain on the A.P. Beutel Health Center require officials to continuously review the services they offer and how they use the center’s resources. The spokesperson noted that the university has invested more in mental health care following a national rise in college students seeking it out.

Transgender and queer students are skeptical of that explanation and believe the university acted in response to pressure from conservative groups. They say the move shows the university is not willing to support them equally.

“It just seems that they don't take the same level of care to address concerns of the queer community as they would other communities,” Klatt said.

Students saw the move as part of a political environment that has become increasingly hostile against LGBTQ+ people in Texas. And it comes as the state’s public universiti

    Recommended alternatives to SketchUp?

    cross-posted from: https://reddthat.com/post/24214265

So, a couple years ago, somebody published the 2017 free desktop client of SketchUp on the chocolatey repos, and I managed to snag it before it got taken down. I use it primarily to make woodworking plans.

I'm wrapping up my transition plan to Linux, but I'm not really up to date on SketchUp alternatives. The only ones I know of are Blender (afaik more for animation and 3D printing) and FreeCAD (CAD seems like overkill, since I'm just doing simple cuts and joinery).

Are there good Linux/FOSS alternatives to SketchUp that have similar features, or is the web client the only reasonable option?

This isn't a joke, though it almost seems like one. It uses Llama 3.1, and supposedly the conversation data stays on the device and gets forgotten over time (through what the founder calls a rolling "context window").

The implementation is interesting, and you can see the founder talking about earlier prototypes and project goals in interviews from several months ago.

    iOS only, for now.

Edit: Apparently, you can build your own for around $50 that runs on ChatGPT instead of Llama. I'm sure you could also figure out how to switch it to the LLM of your choice.

A US appeals court ruled that the Federal Communications Commission's Universal Service Fund is unconstitutional, finding Universal Service fees on phone bills to be a "misbegotten tax." If not overturned, the ruling would upend the $8 billion-a-year system that is used to expand telecom networks and make access more affordable through programs such as Lifeline discounts and deployment grants for Internet service providers.

But the FCC program could survive in the end as the case appears ripe for Supreme Court review, with yesterday's ruling creating a circuit split. The ruling against the FCC was issued by the US Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, which is generally considered one of the most conservative appeals courts.

The FCC previously prevailed in the 6th and 11th circuit appeals courts, which both rejected claims that the Universal Service Fund is unconstitutional. All three cases against the FCC were filed by Consumers' Research, a nonprofit that fights "woke corpor

What if something happened to you?

I'm working through some necessary issues in VMs as I work towards dropping Windows, but it occurred to me that I should pick a distro my non-techy partner could use in the event that something catastrophic happens to me. I really like the declarative/immutable distros, but perhaps something more traditional with btrfs snapshots would be better suited to such a use case...?

It's no secret that NixOS has a steep learning curve, but do any of you share a NixOS PC with family/partners/etc.? If so, what has that experience been like? Could they take over admin if you were incapacitated?
