Hexbear federation megathread
  • Gods its easy to tell its all your first few weeks with federation for you hexbear people, and that you clearly dont know both the social dynamics and the technical side.

And yes, just to spell it out for you: manually blocking 24 thousand accounts and manually cross referencing this against all the new daily signups to also block the new accounts is both too much effort and literally fucking impossible unless I build a custom scraper to get a daily list of total hexbear users.

Like, im not sure how to better get across that you keep coming here to give "ideas" that are fucking literally impossible lol.

  • No, thats the entire fucking point were having this discussion lmao. Lemmy does not allow individual users to block entire other servers, only other individual users or communities. If I could just simply block the entire hexbear server this would not be an issue, but Lemmy does not have this option.

  • Yes, duh. The entire fucking point of having different servers is that it allows you freedom of association. I want to be free to associate with most other people on Lemmy, because they are pretty chill and understand basic social human interaction. I want to be just as free to not associate with sealions who keep showing up in my mentions when they're explicitly told that one single thread is not for them.

  • The purpose of forums is to talk to people who understand basic courtesy. Hexbears like you clearly dont have that. This specific thread is for the opinion of lemm.ee people, not for you. Go bother the rest of Lemmy. There is one specific thread (this one) where your opinion is not asked, and ofcourse you reallllly feel the need to share your opinion.

  • The lack of a sense of place by Hexbears by absolutely flooding this comment thread is the full and sole reason for me to fully support defederation. Lemm.ee is our server, our rules, made by people on the lemm.ee server. The fact that they feel the need to comment and respond on everything says enough about them.

And no, you're not being attacked so that you have the right to defend yourself. Federation is not a right.

  • BBC is starting its own Mastodon instance. The CBC should do the same.
  • Also, you might want to take a look at https://zdf.social/@ZDF and https://ard.social/

ZDF and ARD are the two biggest broadcasters in Germany, and they both have their own ActivityPub (Mastodon) server.

In case you needed some extra convincing that other large mainstream news organisations also have realised that this is actually a good idea that makes sense ;)

A big news org from France is also on Mastodon with like 50k followers, but I cannot remember the name right now

  • BBC is starting its own Mastodon instance. The CBC should do the same.
  • Evan Prodromou (@evan@cosocial.ca) , one of the co-authors of ActivityPub is super interest in getting Canadian news organisations on board the fediverse. He gave a talk about that last night actually: https://cosocial.ca/@evan/110809723914430376

If you're serious about this, you could totally reach out to him, I'm sure he would love to hear from people in CBC

  • What are you Reading? (August 2023)
  • I just finished The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz. Its so fucking good, amazing worldbuilding, story and message. It really explores all the potential interesting ways that you can envision different future worlds in ways that other SciFi often doesnt. I've never read anything like this before.

  • Mastodon is easy and fun except when it isn’t
  • People having issues with Mastodon isn’t an attack on your identity that you have to lash out like that lol. It does illustrate the point of the scolding culture and superiority feeling perfectly though, so in that sense it’s actually a great comment
