VLC tops 6 billion downloads, previews AI-generated subtitles
  • I know Jeff Geerling on Youtube uses OpenAIs Whisper to generate captions for his videos instead of relying on Youtube's. Apparently they are much better than Youtube's being nearly flawless. I would have a guess that Google wants to minimize the compute that they use when processing videos to save money.

  • Arch-Based Distros Dominate the Linux Gaming Scene
  • Once you're a bit familiar with linux, arch becomes much more user friendly due to the Arch wiki and it's wide coverage of topics. Knowing exactly what packages I need to use my Intel card to render with Blender is very handy. If you use a distro like EndeavorOS, you don't even have to do any special setup: it installs like any other distro.

  • BigScreen VR is complete trash
  • They use the front face scanner that's used for Face ID, right? I'm pretty sure those have been on all iPhones since the 10 from 2017, so it's hardly a bleeding edge feature considering it's 8 years old. Having an iPhone as a hard requirement definitely sucks though.

  • BigScreen VR is complete trash
  • I understand why they have the requirement: They want a 3d model of your face that they know is good enough so that they can make the facial interface.

What I don't understand is why do they not accept a 3d model you create yourself? Using photogrammetry and a friend, it would not be too difficult to get a good 3d model of your face. Heck, they could even do a service where you send the photos of your face directly to Bigscreen where they process it for an extra fee. Boom, now there is no iPhone requirement to buy the product.

  • New LTT video about linux.
  • I want to play my games, not grub boot entry simulator.

Bruh. I've been using Fedora and EndeavorOS for the past few years and have not had to edit grub boot entries once. That really sounds like something that I would be doing if I was dual booting Windows lol.

  • New LTT video about linux.
  • Yeah, you can really tell with LTT that they make videos almost daily in the quality of their videos. I still find their content to be very useful to discover new things, but I don't really trust them when it comes to good conclusions and accurate data. That is where Gamer's Nexus really shines in my opinion, even though they cover different topics than LTT, being more review and investigation focused.

  • SteamVR Saw Near-Record Usage In December
  • If you use Fedora or Arch, Envision can be installed through the Terra package repo and AUR respectively. With envision, you basically just select lighthouse, hit the build button, hit the calibrate button with your headset on the floor, and you're ready. I personally don't like all the different windows that SteamVR opens with many having visual glitches on linux. Since I'm using a Pimax headset, SteamVR does not work for me, so Monado is my only option.

  • SteamVR Saw Near-Record Usage In December
  • SteamVR is kinda a heaping pile of trash on linux. It does not even support reprojection, which is an essential feature. Using Monado instead yields a better experience, especially when setup through Envision. lvra.gitlab.io is a great source of information about linux VR.

  • Ontario passes bill that allows major Toronto bike lanes to be ripped out

Wow, I'm sure those sweet, sweet, extra lanes will get you 2 seconds faster to work each day. At the cost of sustainable city and cyclists wellbeing.
