Artemis App
- Mod resignation from the Artemis project
Advisory: Please do not harass anybody who was involved in Artemis, no matter what. Everyone’s got their own lives going on and nobody knows the full extent behind actions or lack thereof. If any does occur, we vehemently condemn it without question.
Let’s get straight to the point: @Lilkev and I (@w8l) are formally stepping down as moderators of the Artemis app communities (Discord, Matrix, and kbin), due to a lack of communication from project lead and founder @hariette.
Many people in the Artemis community have been patient and understanding of the lack of activity, ever since a prior period of radio silence was justified by Hariette saying that she was recovering from chronic pain. However, this has gone on for long enough that the official Artemis Camp instance has failed over and never recovered. This is a problem for Artemis app users, since it is the only instance that is supported. We are also unable to continue performing our duties as moderators in the Camp instance as a result. This effectively means that the entire project is dead.
We also want to deeply apologise for not pushing open-sourcing the application code sooner. The original rationale for not doing so immediately (according to Hariette) was a fear of showing poor quality code in public. In hindsight, bad quality code in the open would’ve been preferable to nothing at all; this would’ve allowed the app to continue in some form in an event like this. And even if the project remained active, the code quality would’ve likely improved with contributions anyways.
Multiple attempts at communication from us and the rest of the OG squad, both publicly and privately, have occurred with the founder to no avail.
We advise moving to directly using kbin or mbin on web, using Lemmy with its many clients, or supporting Lunar for iOS. Lunar is a Lemmy client currently in the process of implementing support for the kbin/mbin API and is already open-source, so it is considerably less likely to meet the same fate as Artemis. There is a kbin community for Lunar at m/lunar on the main kbin instance.
The journey was great while it lasted, but all journeys come to an end. We hope to see you all somewhere else, on some other day…
- API to be unlocked in the next kbin updatekbin.social /kbin RTR#17 The continuation of preparations for refactoring, NGI0-REUSE - /kbin devlog - kbin.social
Today, additional preparations, there are likely 2-3 days left before I start working on the new features to be included before the upcoming first release, which is approaching rapidly. During the next update, the API will be unlocked....
Ernest is on fire lately, and he has now confirmed that the API will be unlocked in the next release of kbin!
It remains to be seen if Artemis automatically discovers that the API is available, or if some further work is needed by Hariette to enable things on the Artemis side. I hope she's doing well.
- Artemis app broken - is the project still alive?
I've enjoyed using Artemis even though I can't login through it (I'm on kbin). It's been interesting to be a pure lurker instead of an avid commenter like I was on the former site. In the past couple of days, though, Artemis has failed to fetch any new content. Deleting the iOS app and reinstalling through Testflight does nothing; the 1-2 day old posts pop right back up and nothing new will come in.
At this point the question has to be asked: is work on Artemis still proceeding? Aside from a few drips and drabs Hariette hasn't been heard from in at least a month. I really hope the dream of an Apollo-like fediverse app -- which Artemis was already previewing very well for us -- isn't dead.
- Does the latest update to kbin.social include the API?
https://kbin.social/api is a 404, but the API PRs have already been merged...

- When will kbin.social be added as an option to Artemis?
Kbin (and kbin.social) is slated for a major update this week that is supposed to bring in some improvements as well as the API.
My question is, How long after this update will it take for kbin.social to be added as an option for Artemis?
Just wondering - the app is great and I know I am not the only one really appreciating all the hard work going into it!

- What’s happening with Artemis these days?
I’m guessing @Hariette has been taking a well-deserved break?
Or maybe the API integration into kbin has not proceeded as smoothly as hoped?
At any rate. I mostly just wanted to make a thread via web browser on artemis.camp and check if I could see it in the TestFlight article.
- Artemis support for kbin.social timeline?
I’m loving Artemis but starting to realize that I’m suffering for not being able to post comments or replies after a month or so of using the app. Is there any sense of when support for more instances is coming?
- Has there been any update on when the kbin API will be available? A few weeks ago, I heard it would be "a few days," and haven't heard anything since.

- artemis.camp down
I'm getting timeouts and bad gateways trying to access artemis.camp preventing me from authenticating on the Artemis app TestFlight beta.
Is there a place for reporting bugs or downtime? Or a status page to keep us updated?
- Moderating from Artemis
Sorry if this has already been asked, but do we know how moderating will work from Artemis? Has this feature been implemented, and will there be any tools beyond what kbin already has available?
Thanks!
- Observations Regarding Federation Between Artemis.camp and lemmy.world
I am confused about federation between Lemmy.World and Artemis.camp.
I have noticed that some votes, comments, and posts made by accounts from users at lemmy.world do not show up when viewed on artemis.camp. The same page viewed on kbin.social shows a lot more activity, and it appears most the activity not federating is from lemmy.world.
Artemis.camp and kbin.social seem to federate
Kbin.social and Lemmy.world seem to federate
Artemis.camp and Lemmy.world seem to have trouble federating.
Is there a way to resolve this and get artemis.camp to federate the data?
Thanks!
- I wonder what microblogging will look like in Artemis.
Microblogs are an interesting thing. I was never able to get into Twitter or Mastodon because it feels so disorganized and chaotic to me. That said, I think microblog compatibility is low key one of Kbin’s best features with a lot of potential. The problem is that right now it seems like kbin doesn’t really know what to do with it.
This is where I wonder if a dedicated Kbin app like Artemis could really carry it further. Has there been any discussion on this yet? How would you imagine microblogs being better implemented with Artemis?
- Will Artemis be added to Fdroid?
I avoid the Google Play store whether possible. It would be great to discover Artemis on the Fdroid community.
- FYI, been working on figuring out the login bug with Artemis on Android. Have a lead, let's see if it pans out 🤞🏼

After that, it's looking at the issue tracker and prioritizing. So definitely react with thumbs up on things you want done ASAP.
At the same time, working on adding:
- User profile content feed
- Saving posts
- Microblogging
- Lemmy support
A lot of the things above have been in the works for weeks. So it seems like a lot but it's less work that what you might think :)
- Can't log in
Just downloaded the Android beta. When I tried to log in with artemis.camp, it took me to Firefox, where I logged in and pressed authorise, and then I went back to Artemis and it said waiting for browser. Now when I press the artemis.camp button again it brings me to a white screen in Firefox, and still says waiting for browser.
I've also tried it with chrome but same issue

- Public Beta initial feedback
Okay, disclaimer this is just a "not even 5 minutes in" type of thing at this point, but I wanted to start the complaining about a few things already. ;) Also, I use it without an account at this point. I don't know if that affects any of the app features right now, besides the obvious ones to communicate & vote of course.

Compact mode thumbnails are microscopic in size. Thumbnail size is already a sore spot for me because most Reddit & Lemmy apps are also pretty bad in that regard (likely focusing more on the big cards, dunno), but this is by far the worst example I've seen. It's especially sad considering that the desktop kbin page is the polar opposite to this. In compact mode it actually fills the entire space out that is available to it.
-
Thumbnails also cannot be swapped to the left side.
-
I love that there's an option to have all comments collapsed. However, I'd like it if I manually collapse a comment again (if we talk about the top level one), that it does not collapse the entire thing, including the content, but goes back to its previous state. I assume this might've been a case of "afterwards it is already read so we don't need it" design choice, but I'd like to see an option where collapsing comments manually doesn't do that.
-
The "swipe left to go back" option does not seem to do anything, or I am misunderstanding how it is supposed to work?
-
After scrolling for even just a little bit the app starts to slow down significantly.
-
The Android icon could be improved instead of just being a small square in a circle (I believe that's like the stock default icon settings on the newer Android versions).

- Artemis.camp confirmation link expired
I tried registering on artemis.camp, but my confirmation link expired and there's no way to have it resent. I tried logging in, but it says my account isn't active. When I try to recreate it, it says my email is taken. I tried using the contact form, but no response.
Where do I go for help?

- Microblogging still on the map?
Hi,
I noticed microblogging was mentioned in the FAQ. Is it still planned at some point? (I am hesitating to create a Mastodon account for this, but I would much prefer to centralize everything under my kbin account if possible).
- Reminder that the FAQ changes over time
Please check the FAQ regularly or semi-regularly, as it will be continuously updated as time goes on. As of the time of writing, more details regarding the public beta and monetisation have been added.

- /kbin's APIs Almost Here and Artemis Public Beta Isn't Far Behind!!
Back in June 13 I jumped ship from Reddit.
https://tech.lgbt/media\_proxy/110539622656202665/original
I went with kbin but really needed an App. So I said I would make one... And, well, four hour later, I had the first prototype of what would become Artemis!
A Long But Short Way ----------
It really hasn't been much but it feels like a LOT of time has happened. I blame the massive influx point we're at in the #Threadiverse. But also, just how much of a community has formed around Artemis. The Discord is only a few weeks old but has over 1,200+ users. So many people helping from every corner. And over 4,000 testers signed up!
Only 700 are actively using the private beta right now. That's soon about to change...
/kbin API ----------
This PR adds an official API to /kbin, it's mostly done and in review.
During this time, Artemis has been using a homegrown API that uses browser automation to interface with /kbin. Great for the limited beta but not really scalable. Still, it allow me to build the foundation that makes the app today.
Once the API goes live, it'll be time to say goodbye to the scrappy backend. And hello to faster and more reliable everything.
Public Beta ----------
Artemis is still in beta, tons I want to do and tons I want and have to fix/improve. But with no /kbin app in sight, I'll be opening up the beta within the next few weeks, based on how long the API PR takes.
To not make people in the queue wait longer. I'll be inviting our biggest wave of tester to try it out. Using the https://artemis.camp instance. A fork with the current API changes that are in development.
I'm preparing for that by wrapping up the integration with new API. Fixing some high pri bugs. And doing an accessibility pass, which some of our testers have already gotten ahead of!
Keep an eye on your inbox, our discord+matrix and this magazine for more info :)

- I made some icons for the next icon pack, what do you guys think?
Some more info and the reasoning behind design decisions.
Artemis’ quiver is a reworked Artemis’ kbin community icon, but while that icon had 7 arrows for good luck, this one has five — for future five stars in the App Store :)
Stellar siblings is called that because the stars on the background are taken from a region in the night sky that includes the Lyra constellation — one that is associated with Apollo, Artemis’ brother. Larger stars are from the constellation itself, while smaller ones are those visible around the constellation. All the stars are carefully placed using stellar maps, so what you see on the icon should pretty closely resemble what you’d see irl if you can find Lyra. Icon with stellar map overlaid
And Artebierre is just fun imo :) The name is a nod to Alcubierre drive, the fastest sci-fi-ish FTL drive (to get "to the moon"). Not completely sure about the nebula shape yet, and whether it should have more or less contrast in general. A previous version and one other icon
- Hello world. I'll be posting about [#ArtemisApp](https://artemis.camp/tag/ArtemisApp) from this instance. It has the new Kbin API, to help with testing the app :)

- Artemis now has full picture view mode and link preview in the home page!
Also the compact mode is now back to being actually compact.
- Kbin.social logout
I use kbin.social and readit.buzz. I like kbin better because it loads faster, but it keeps logging me out. Readit never does that, but it’s slower. Is there a way to stop kbin from logging me out all the time?
- Testing Artemis on Linux via Waydroid
Overall no problems found yet. This will be rather useful for faster testing, along with tablet UI testing later on.
- Please bring back the more condensed content view
Or at least make it a toggle. I don’t think this is what the people who wanted a card style view were after, and it’s way more frustrating for people who like a very dense feed.
