Improved Channel Select Menu 0.3.0 — Turbo mode support, kbin.earth compatibility, and an Mbin version!
  • Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look at how I can solve the issue.

Improved Channel Select Menu 0.3.0 — Turbo mode support, kbin.earth compatibility, and an Mbin version!

I recently made a major update to my Improved Channel Select Menu userscript, which adds your subscribed magazines and liked collections to the channel select button in the header.

    Here are the changes:

    • The script now works with turbo mode!
    • The menu now automatically refreshes when you subscribe or unsubscribe from a magazine. This can be changed in settings.
    • An oversight was correct that caused the script to break on kbin.earth. Now, it should work there, and it now even applies there by default.

In addition to that, I also made a version for Mbin instances. So if you're on kbin.run, fedia.io, etc., you can use this if you prefer it over Mbin's native sub menu.

\*Note: To get it to run on your Mbin instance, you'll probably need to add the following line of code in: // @match *://instance.name/* Add this where the other // @match lines are, and replace instance.name with the name of your instance.

Hope this helps a few people (especially since kbin.social's quite slow rn)!

    RE: Is Ernest still here?
  • Thanks a ton for the update Ernest! It's great to hear from you, and I hope your health improves soon.

That being said, I do have a few things I'd like to suggest.

    --

In February, I spent my time visiting doctors and undergoing treatment with medications, which often had very unpleasant side effects. Therefore, I decided to hold off on any major updates to avoid causing even more chaos.

If I'm interpreting this correctly (i.e., that you chose not to give any updates as to prevent people freaking out), I don't think this was the best move. I understand where you were coming from, but (if you were able) some sort of small status update would've been preferable to a month-long silence (especially since you'd previously said that you'd be unavailable for only 2–4 days). A simple "Hey, I'm currently not doing well. I'll get back to things as soon as I'm feeling better," would've at least let us know that you were alive and that the project hadn't been abandoned.

    --

Just because it's not visible that something is happening doesn't mean I haven't been doing anything during this time. In fact, two really significant things have been successful, which I've been working on for a long time and which I intended to announce soon once I recover.

I don't think this whole "holding off for a big announcement" thing is a great approach, at least not now. There are currently several issues that we're waiting to see fixed, and we have no idea which ones (if any) are being worked on. If you must wait for a big reveal though, at least telling us, "I'm still working on stuff" would be better than nothing.

    --

And finally, I really suggest getting some more admins for the instance. You're absolutely correct to prioritize your health over Kbin; nevertheless, it's far from ideal for your absence to mean that spam piles up, moderation requests lie unanswered, and accounts can't be deleted. We'd all appreciate it if you could have at least one extra person on deck for whenever you're ill or in need of a break.

    --

Thanks again for all you do for Kbin, and I hope things get better!

  • An interesting design for a 51-star US flag
  • From what I can gather, this particular design was proposed by Puerto Rico's New Progressive Party (Partido Nuevo Progresista or PNP), which advocates for Puerto Rican statehood. The circle definitely has its appeal, though I think I'd prefer something closer to the current flag.

  • Do any of you eat and actually enjoy dino nuggets?
  • 100% with you on tenders being better than nuggets. In general, nuggets have always been kinda eh (sometimes solid, sometimes awful), and dino nuggets are the worst of their kind.

  • What food or drink do you dislike that a lot of people like?
  • Well, I despise donuts, so it's probably me.

  • What food or drink do you dislike that a lot of people like?
  • What? Why would anyone cook it? What would they use that for? Who could hurt someone so badly to make them do that?

  • What food or drink do you dislike that a lot of people like?
  • Interesting. I might be somewhat of the opposite — I think barbecue's great, but I'm not a fan of barbecue potato chips. I'll maybe eat some if there's nothing else around and I'm hungry, but I've just never liked them.

  • MAGA Candidate Says He’s Worried About Babies Who Might Get an Abortion
  • But Eigel isn’t alone in his condemnation of the bill. Another Republican, Missouri State Senator Sandy Crawford, claimed the incest and rape provision shouldn’t pass because “God is perfect.”

“God does not make mistakes. And for some reason he allows that to happen, bad things happen,” Crawford said. “I’m not gonna be able to support the amendments because I am very pro-life.”

You can't help but appreciate the sheer amount of cognitive dissonance you gotta have to say, "God is perfect," and "…for some reason He allows … bad things [to] happen." How delusional can you be to say that raped children giving birth is part of some perfect, divine plan?

Social conservatism is a complete joke.

  • What food or drink do you dislike that a lot of people like?

What the title says. Feel free to get into fierce food debates in the comments.

I have a good few unique dislikes, but the one I'll mention here is Dr. Pepper. It tastes absolutely abominable, and I have no idea how everyone likes it. It's just not good.

    So… what's going on?

Since the beginning of the year, there's been a bit of a pattern over on @kbinDevlog:

    • Ernest posts, saying he'll get back to regular devlogs in 1-4 days;
    • Absolutely nothing happens for the next 2 weeks or so;
    • Ernest posts again, saying he'll get back to regular devlogs in 1-4 days;
    • etc.

Now, it's understandable for your plans to change in response to unforeseen events popping up or foreseen events taking longer than expected. From what I can tell, the delays have been due to formalities and medical issues, and I absolutely believe that Ernest should prioritize his physical health over Kbin.

That being said, if you can't go back to the usual pattern of development within the time frame you promised, then it's best for people to know sooner so they aren't left wondering what's happening. If you said 2 days but you need to delay, I'd like to know soon after those 2 days as opposed to getting silence for 2 weeks.

This time around, the culprit of the silence may be complications in a hospital procedure he recently underwent as per his most recent devlog. However, that doesn't explain the periods of nothing before then, so I'm still left wondering why quick updates have been so infrequent over a 2-month period.

Additionally, there are some major problems being caused by Ernest's absence:

    • Big magazines that Ernest moderates, like @tech, are riddled with spam.
    • Abandoned magazine moderation have been unanswered, so people can't pitch in to deal with spam even if they wanted to.
    • Nothing has happened on the Codeberg for over 2 months (except for one translation-related change which wasn't done by Ernest), so we're in the dark as to what progress is actually being made.
    • Kbin is still, well, in an undeveloped state, meaning issues like poor microblog federation have persisted for months.

So, @ernest, if you're in a position to answer, what's going on rn, and could you have someone moderate the instance or work on the project in situations like this where you're absent? I hope this doesn't come across as unnecessary whining, but I think this pattern is becoming a genuine problem.

  • Maybe home-grown human intelligence (HGHI)?

  • Can registrations on kbin.social be disabled to stop spammers
  • This might be a good idea, at least until Ernest gets back. To my knowledge, he's the only instance admin, so as long as he's inactive, the spammers won't get dealt with (especially on magazines he moderates, like /m/tech).

Ideally, there could be another admin or two to deal with this stuff when he's not available, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.

  • Do you use a serial (Oxford) comma?
  • I think the point is more that without the serial comma, the last two items in the list aren't separated like the others, which (imo) feels like omitting the last bullet point in a list.

    EDIT: Fixed a typo.

  • Do you use a serial (Oxford) comma?
  • Haha, this is gold. I'd like to think I fall more into the pedant category (except when something actually matters; then I lean towards moron).

  • Do you use a serial (Oxford) comma?

A serial comma (or Oxford comma) is an optional comma used before the last item in a list. For example, "bread, butter, and tax evasion" uses a serial comma, whereas "bread, butter and tax evasion" does not.

Do you use it? Why or why not?

I always use it. I don't perceive any less of a pause between the last two items in a list than between any others, so it feels natural to put a comma there as well. Tbh, I'm so used to it that I usually have to do a double-take when it's not there (since it looks like a grammar error to me at first).

What the title says. What books are you reading? Or if not books, what are some interesting articles you've read lately?

I've been devouring Rick Riordan's Heroes of Olympus series this past week (just started the last book yesterday). It adds so much to the Percy Jackson universe, and I plan on binging Trials of Apollo afterwards.

  • My attempt at redesigning New York's flag
  • Oop, forgot to post the symbolism. Just posted that in a separate comment.

  • My attempt at redesigning New York's flag
  • When I was going through redesigning all of the U.S. state flags, this is one of the first designs I made. Here's the symbolism:

    • The colors are reminiscent of the orange, white, & blue pattern used in many of New York's state flag.

      • The blue has been replaced with the purple of the Iroquois flag.
    • The white shape in the center holds several meanings.

      • It resembles a crown to represent New York being the Empire State.
      • It points upward to represent New York's motto: "Excelsior" ("Higher").
      • It looks somewhat like tall skyscrapers because duh.
  • A Kbin flag
  • This is my take on a flag for Kbin, a fediverse thread aggregator like Lemmy (and the one that I use). There isn't that much to the symbolism behind it. There's magneta because there's magenta in the logo, and there's a slash to go with the shape of the logo.

I also used this flag for the icon of this community's Kbin equivalent: @vexillology.

  • Flag of Central Province, Solomon Islands
  • What's that even supposed to be? Even ignoring it's… distinct shape, it seems like it was just a bad idea from the beginning.

  • Issue with sort by hot
  • Yeah, having posts automatically upvoted by OP would be great. I think that Lemmy automatically starts with an upvote count of 1 regardless of OP's vote, so I think Kbin should do the same. I get that Hot is meant to factor in activity and time, but it just feels super off for the only post in the past month to not appear. Surely a post that was made an hour ago is hotter than a post was made weeks back.

  • Issue with sort by hot
  • Given that we're so small at the moment, why should a post need an upvote to be at all visible on the default sort? It can the only post of the past two weeks, but if there's no upvote, it doesn't get seen. It's very impractical.

And even if we go with this logic, why should the criterion for a post being seen be whether OP remembers to upvote their own post? It doesn't make sense. If you think that posts should only be seen if someone opts to go through new and give it an upvote (because otherwise it's not a "hot" post), OP shouldn't be able to do that.

Right now, we have a system where a major factor in post visibility is, "Did OP remember to click the upvote button?" It's just not beneficial.

    Issue with sort by hot

This has been an issue since the beginning of Kbin tmk, but when you make a post, it won't appear under sort by hot unless it has an upvote. This means that if someone forgets to upvote their own post, it just won't appear on the default sort. There are plenty of posts I've missed because of this.

Any idea when something like this might be changed?

A slight redesign of Rhode Island's flag
  • The current flag

Since I already like Rhode Island's flag a lot, I didn't want to go too far from the original design. I decided to make the following three changes:

    • The background was changed from white to blue. I felt yellow on blue popped a lot more due to the higher contrast, and it helps a lot with the nautical vibe.
    • The "HOPE" ribbon was removed. It's fine, but I prefer the flag without it.
    • The ratio was changed from 29:33 (🤮) to 1:1 to match maritime signal flags.

Improved Channel Select Menu 0.2.0 — Makes your subscribed magazines and liked channels more accessible

Improved Channel Select Menu for Kbin

One of my most wanted features as of late has been for the channel select menu to have my subscribed magazines and liked collections. Right now, it just contains some general feeds, but I thought it'd be super useful to also have your mags and collections there for easy access! However, given that Kbin development priorities are currently elsewhere, I'd try to implement something myself for the time being.

This userscript does exactly what the title says. All of the magazines you've subscribed to and the collections you've liked are now in the channel select menu that you can find in the top right. This should make getting to your favorite mags and collections a lot more convenient.

    Download here

Given that this is my first time making a userscript and that I made this in a day, there are probably (definitely) a few bugs. If you find any, please let me know.

Could we get something like PieFed's "Add Remote" button?

A super helpful feature that PieFed (a new fediverse thread aggregator like Lemmy & Kbin) has is an "Add Remote" button on its communities page. This button allows you to get a community on another instance to appear on your PieFed instance (and thus get the PieFed instance to start getting posts from that community).

Here, for example, I use it to get /m/kbinStyles to appear on piefed.social.

A dedicated button & interface like this would be super nice to have on Kbin, as it'd help a ton with scenarios where someone's created a new community on Lemmy and you want it to federate over here. Currently, you can just type the community address in the search bar, but a dedicated UI would make this a lot clearer and more intuitive.

The page select arrows don't work in the All Content view

When you're in the All Content view, the arrows on the page select always act as if you're on page 1. I.e., the left arrow never works, and the right arrow always sends you to page 2. Not sure why this is.

I'm still not a massive fan and way prefer the ship (which gives you more control), but the swing's long sweeps can help give sections with it a large, grand vibe (e.g., the swing section in Dastardly).
