Archaeologists at a site near Yamula Dam in Türkiye's Kayseri made a staggering find: a 7.5 million-year-old giraffe forelimb bone, adding a new 'spot' to their impressive discovery record. This find was particularly remarkable amidst the expected assemblage of equids and bovids, including an ancient three-toed horse, 'hipparion,' a distinct species from the modern day one-hoofed horse. Oğuzhan Köylüoğlu, an anthropologist at the forefront of the excavations that began on June 7, reported a tally of 612 fossils uncovered so far in this region. Ever since a local shepherd, Murat Adıyaman, stumbled upon a bone fragment in 2017, the area has been a hotbed for fossil enthusiasts. This year, the team decided to 'stick their necks out,' switching up their extraction method by removing fossils as blocks rather than individual pieces. An impressive mix of ancient animals, such as horses, sheep, goats, and antelopes, also surfaced from these age-old dusts alongside the unique giraffe fossil, which remains intact without fractures.

- We've adopted Kunene!
Say hello to Kunene, the latest adoptee of !giraffes.
She's a majestic giraffe known for her escapades in Namibia's picturesque landscapes, from the Hoanib River to the rugged terrains near Puros, and the Skeleton Coast National Park.
Kunene isn't just about long treks and picturesque settings, though. She's a caring giraffe who's been spotted playing babysitter to younger companions like Dylan, Morgan, and a friend, creating quite a heartwarming scene.
Her days are filled with delightful company, hearty leafy meals, and even giraffe gossip. There are also moments of solitude, where she takes life in her stride, like nonchalantly swatting a DNA biopsy dart with her tail.
Despite the rugged terrain and the wilderness, Kunene's adventurous spirit shines through.

- Okapi, Okapi! Oh How You've Grown! Rare 'Forest Giraffe' Calf Steps Out at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo's six-week-old okapi calf, Arabi, has taken her first steps outside, marking a rare moment of celebration for the endangered species. Born to parents K’tusha and Stomp, Arabi is one of fewer than 10,000 okapis remaining in the wild, according to estimates. The okapi species, often referred to as the 'forest giraffe' due to their long necks and zebra-like stripes, faces a high risk of extinction in the wild. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies the species as endangered, as their population continues to dwindle due to habitat loss, hunting, and conflict. The birth of Arabi at Chester Zoo, which has a 20-year history of supporting okapi conservation, represents a 'vital' addition to global okapi population. Chester Zoo is a part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP), which aims to maintain a genetically diverse population of okapis in conservation zoos.

- RIP Armani
Perth Zoo's beloved 20-year-old giraffe, Armani, has sadly passed away, leaving a significant void in the hearts of the zoo family and the wider community. Remembered for his "charming" personality, Armani was adored by visitors and staff alike, known for his "large identifiable lumpy head" and popularity amongst his female companions. His legacy endures through his seven offspring, residing across Australia and New Zealand. Arriving in Perth Zoo from New Zealand in 2005, Armani quickly became a community favourite and a vital contributor to the regional breeding program.
In his retirement, Armani enjoyed a peaceful existence, feasting on tasty browse and carrots. However, after a struggle with the effects of old age, the decision was made to humanely euthanize him, ensuring a dignified end to his life.
An outpouring of tributes has followed the announcement of his passing, with community members expressing their heartfelt affection for this "majestic" and "true gentleman" of a giraffe. A particularly touching memory dates back to 2021, when the heartwarming first meeting between Armani and his daughter was captured on film.

- Amazing Okapis
Residing in the German Leipzig Zoo, this Okapi presents itself as a captivating blend of the animal kingdom. Originating from the Ituri Rainforest in the Democratic Republic of Congo, this peculiar creature, though bearing zebra-like stripes, is in fact the giraffe's solitary kin. Its distinctively patterned legs coupled with a lustrous reddish-brown coat render it an expert at forest camouflage.
Remarkably, the Okapi sports an impressive 18-inch prehensile tongue, a dexterous tool for both feeding and grooming. Despite its evident charm and peculiar traits, the Okapi remained a well-kept secret from the Western world until the early 20th century - a testament to its superb adaptation to the dense rainforest.
- 100,000 votes for giraffe name in NC zoo
A few weeks ago, the North Carolina Zoo reached out to its online community seeking assistance in naming their latest addition, a baby giraffe. After receiving an overwhelming response of more than 100,000 suggestions, the calf has a name - Fenn.
Fenn, who was born on May 20, tipping the scale at 145 pounds and standing an impressive 6 feet tall, is named in honor of Julian and Stephanie Fennessy, the founders of @Save_Giraffe.
Several other names were proposed, including Nelson, in honor of Nelson Mandela, Mosi, an African term for “firstborn son,” Tamu, Swahili for “sweet,” Jackson, a nod to the calf’s father, Jack, and Bongani, a Zulu name meaning “grateful, thankful.”
Fenn's parents are first-time mom Leia, born at Zoo Miami in 2009 before arriving at the North Carolina Zoo in 2014, and Jack, born at Dickerson Park Zoo in 2008 and brought to North Carolina a year later.
- Giraffe fights back
Giraffes are surprisingly fast and strong, and can kick in any direction with their legs. A well-placed kick from a giraffe can kill a lion, which is one of the world's strongest predators. Therefore, it's extremely risky for smaller predators like hyenas to attack a giraffe, especially if it's a fully grown individual.
