- offshore pfd recommendations
what offshore pfd recommendations do you have? i have used several but never take note of brand/model. I'm looking at this mustang md3184; something with harness built in and easy enough to travel with.
- Force 5 Dinghy Rhab
Picked up a Force 5 dinghy plus trailer years ago, for the low low price of $100. Prior owner had let water sit in the mast tube, cracking it vertically. Trailer bunks were set up improperly as well, leading to some gnarly cracks in the hull. Without having any sailing experience, I was besotted with her (I can't resist a good project), until I learned the sail slipped over the mast and wasn't raised via halyard. I set her aside for a few years while I worked on other boat projects that fell into my lap (O'Day 19 & Westerly Centaur).
I'm based on a river with height restrictions in both directions, preventing me from actually sailing with the O'Day and the Westerly. The dinghy can make it under with feet to spare. I'd like to get some actual sailing in,, so I've set myself a goal to finish the rehab and get her on the water before the end of the season.
Mast tube has been repaired. Ground out and beveled the cracks in the hull, then fiberglassed several layers over. I hate mixing gelcoat, so I'll be painting instead. PVC replacements for the thwart bits are sitting in the pile, ready to go.
Trailer needs some work as well: bunkers need to be secured better, tires and bearings need inspection.
- Hunnebostrand, Bohuslän, Sweden
After four hours of sail through the rain. Just after we docked the sun greeted us.
- Sailing boat rescued by the Götheborglemmy.world Sailing boat rescued by the Götheborg | Götheborg of Sweden - Lemmy.world
I want to crew the Götheborg. >Imagine losing your rudder out at sea and sending out a distress call. And then the largest ocean-going wooden sailing ship in the world comes to your rescue. Or in the words of the sailors on the sailing boat: “This moment was very strange, and we wondered if we were ...
- Tough waking up to this
Forecast had it miserably hot, but turned out to be decent. Way nicer than I was expecting.
O'Day 23-2 rafted up to a 32' Benateu, and another O'Day (272LE).
- Hornsund - Svalbard
This was taken in the Hornsund - southern Spitsbergen. I would love to go back - a very stark and beautifiul place.
- Fantastic weather, three days in a row
I'm rigged up and ready to go on a weekend where I got in three consecutive days of sailing -- first time ever. Next acquisition: tiller extension. It is now clearly in the must-have category.
- Marine wiring resources
Does anyone have any handy resources for doing electrical work on a boat? I have to update most of my electrical systems as part of a repower I'm doing. The stakes are pretty high with electricity so I want to be sure I'm doing it right.
- ALIR Starts This Thursday
I'll be racing J35 Osprey 205 miles over 40ish hours with 7 other people. You can track our AIS here: http://kws.kattack.com/WPlayer/WPosDisplay.aspx?FeedID=1928
- No need for an outboard
Left the engine on the boat and sailed my dinghy to shore today for a grocery run.
- yall cool with beachcat sailors?
This is my hobie 18. I mostly sail inland lakes. I got it because I was tired of taking my pocket cruiser out and it not moving because there wasnt enough wind. This cat will move in much lighter blows.

- Bio-luminescent water at my slip
The bioluminescence of the water caused my AC discharge water to glow at my slip last night.
That’s a first for me.
Could also watch the glowing outline of fish swimming!
- Finally starting my ASA 101 course
After buying a Hunter 23 last year fall, then finally getting it out at a local reservoir I figured I needed to get all my ducks in a row. Currently learning in a 4 person group on a J/24.
Pic is my hunter 23 under mainsail with no jib as a trial run. Or it would be if I didn't get an error trying to upload a picture.
- Chillin in the V Berth
Had to get out of the sun for a few moments while doing some boat work. Got a good long look at the mast.
- First Sail with gear
We loaded up the Hunter 170 today to see how she would sail when loaded down with camping gear in preparation for next weekend’s trip to the Apostle Islands.
My wife is still a bit nervous, but feeling much more confident after today. Please ignore the watering can. She wanted to put a bit more weight onboard just in case.
- Telstar 28 in Deltaville VA
Just out here on vacation and drove past this thing... Never seen anything like it.
Folding trimaran.
- House Bank Charging
I'll stipulate up front that I know electrical setups vary wildly between specific boats. That said: I'm about to do a weekend charter on a 36 ft sailboat, and I was wondering if there is a general amount of time that is typical to run the engine per day to top off the house bank.
- My first regatta
Last Sunday I participated to my first regatta in Italy. It was the “100 Vele” in the Tyrrhenian Sea nearby Rome.

- The Complete Rigger's Apprentice
Hey! Just curious if anyone has read this book. Also, in the beginning it mentions buying Nylon twine (36-48), double braided Dacron rope, and three strand spun Dacron rope. I went to my local West Marine and had trouble actually finding this stuff, it's a smaller store so maybe they didn't have it? Can anyone point me in the right direction to find this stuff?
- DIY Rope Bagsusing.tech DIY Rope Bags
Purpose My boat needs some new rope bags. The old Ronstad ones have held up incredibly well, but they just werent sticking to the back of the cockpit anymore. Lured in by the appeal of trying SNAD fasteners and having some leftover Sunbrella material from a sail cover I made, I decided to see if I c...
Wrote some info on how to make those rope bags I posted earlier.
- S/V Pinnacle
S/V Pinnacle, a Tartan 4100, leaving Buzzards Bay at the start of the 2023 Marion Bermuda Race. You can just make out my gray beard fiddling with the mainsail trim if you squint hard.
- Saildrones (x-post from ! technology@beehaw.org)arstechnica.com Drones take to the waves: Saildrones are getting data where people can’t
They can monitor the Antarctic year round and sail straight into hurricanes.
Stole this from another sub (don't know how to cross-post) but it's an interesting application of sailing.
- Crazy Lightning Storm in Central Florida Last Night
There was so much energy in the storm after it passed last night.
- Solo sailing on Father's Day
Not the best wind, but it was sailing none the less. Sailed about 10 miles averaging 4kts
- What direction do flags blow on a tall ship?
I just finished building a model of a pirate ship and want the flags to be pointing the right direction. Should the flags be blowing to the bow because the wind is behind the ship, or to the stern as the ship drags the sails along?
Looking at paintings they seem to mostly be blowing to the stern, however there are some that have them blowing to the bow aswell; so I figured it'd be best to ask people who have experience.
