This would be cool if
- The stairs were fully solid - bottom and backs.
- This was made with mixed wood planks. The lower part has storage and the upper part has holes in the wall part to open the space up
- If had a hand rail on the outer side.

I think that's the joke, but my brain is broken from looking at these stairs.

Oh, no joke, it would just preserve the feel of the stairs while making them actually safe
