He wasn't just being stupid though, he was part of a team mapping out new parts of the cave.
Yeah this is more along the lines of "researcher working with multinational team falls ill in remote cave" more than "dumb american does dumb thing and needs rescue". Man started throwing up blood and fell into a 3 day semiconciousness at which point he needed rescue.

if I hadn't accidentally seen a news segment with him I'd be on the same page. The headlines never point out the work he was doing.

He was doing research work and he wasn't stuck because of carelessness, he was stuck because he unfortunately got sick during the expedition.
