The private sector owns the vast majority of the Nation’s critical infrastructure and key resources—roughly 85 percent. However, the government historically has funded the
construction and maintenance of certain infrastructure sectors (e.g. transportation and water infrastructure).
Over a third of the Nation’s dams are fifty years old, a number that will increase to nearly 70 percent in ten years. In addition, bridges are generally designed to last 50 years, and the average bridge in the United States is 43 years old
