Damn I thought we were past the CRTC limiting foreign media.
I was always on the fence about it - they have rules like you have to play Canadian music on the radio x amount of minutes per non Canadian music (or something like that). It's always made things a bit weird.
When spotify and netflix came about - i thought the government had moved on from that era of control
It'll be interesting to see how this goes down - i imagine not well.
It's a balance because most countries don't want American culture burying their own. Those laws are what has made Canadian musicians so successful over the years. Music is really the only cultural thing that Canada is able to stand up for itself. Forcing broadcasters to dedicate X amount of time to domestic artists is important to prevent American media conglomerates from boxing out small and independent artists.
There are so many incredible artists from Canada and for some reason it's really hard for the majority of them to breakout in the states even if the quality of music is up to lar or often better than a lot of what's popular in the USA. It's always interested me.
They tried it already with news media with Google and Facebook, and were basically told to pound sand. Facebook doesn't provide news feeds in Canada anymore.
