Good Bye, Lenin! (2004) - In The German Democratic Republic, the world's coolest mom tragically falls into a coma. While she is unconscious, Good Germany sadly falls to revisionism and becomes really shitty. When she wakes up, her son has to create a fake world for her where the GDR still exists and capitalism hasn't sadly triumphed, or else she will die from the shock. Touching, sad, and funny movie.

Since it looks like we're holding off on Halloween recommendations for now, I'll suggest: Kung Fu Panda 2, the best of the trilogy.

Related to my other comment, a great double feature with Ed Wood is of course Plan 9 From Outer Space , a 1957 film considered one of the worst of all time. Shot on a shoestring budget, it's actually very entertaining.

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) - This one has come up repeatedly but we haven't watched it yet, so I'll throw it in here. It's one of the better Coen bros. films.

House (1977) - Maybe the best-regarded Japanese horror film of all time. Excellent choice for spooky month.

Isle of Dogs (2018) - Wes Anderson makes an animated film about talking dog puppets in Japan. It is as strange as it sounds, but also quite acclaimed.

Rear Window (1954) - Hitchcock movie where Jimmy Stewart looks out his window and thinks he saw a murder.

Quien Te Cantara is a Spanish movie about a singer who loses her memory starring Najwa Nimri from Casa De Papel and Vis a Vis.

Paprika (2006) - Perfect Blue was very well-received, so how about another Satoshi Kon film?

Ed Wood (1994)
A young cross-dressing director and a group of misfits set about creating Plan 9 From Outer Space, a sincere 1957 film that ends up being considered one of the worst of all time.

Michael Clayton (2007) - Really underrated and unjustly forgotten legal thriller starring George Clooney and Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson.

The Mask Of Zorro (1997) - Cool Zorro movie, with sweet swordfights and a great cast and a sexy as hell dance scene. Watch it.

Terminator 2 (1991) - You know why this movie rocks so I won't elaborate.

SLC Punk

Thief (1981) - Early Michael Mann film starring James Caan as an expert thief. Really stylish, beautifully filmed, and super cool. Some parts will require content warnings.

Chungking Express (1994) - Wong Kar-wai's magnum opus, often considered the greatest Chinese film of all time.
- The best Wong Kar-Wai film is whatever the last one I watched is. Although my soul resides in In The Mood For Love.

Adaptation (2002) - We watched Synecdoche NY, so we should cap off the Charlie Kaufman Cinematic Universe.

Manhunter (1986) - An early Michael Mann film that adapts Red Dragon. The main guy from CSI has to hunt a serial killer. Brian Cox plays Hannibal Lector. Tom Noonan is creepy in it.

Rushmore (1998) - I don't think we've watched any Wes Anderson yet. Let's start here.

Pi (1998) - We haven't watched any Aronofsky yet, I don't think. This is like a tech-noir thriller, looks pretty neat.

Ex Machina is a movie about androids that Shaun did an essay about recently.

- Surprisingly good

Barry Lyndon (1975) - An incredibly beautiful and cold Stanley Kubrick movie. It's about a guy who tries to rise up through the world of 18th century Europe. Lots of beautiful music and frames that look like 18'th century paintings. One of Kubrick's best.

Thunderheart is a mystery movie loosely based on Wounded Knee in 1973, Leonard Peltier, and AIM. Val Kilmer and Graham Greene are both great in it and it was shot mostly on location at The Pine Ridge Reservation.

The Nice Guys (2016) starring Russel Crowe and Ryan Gosling
In 1970s Los Angeles, a mismatched pair of private eyes investigate a missing girl and the mysterious death of a porn star. As both men are forced to team up, they need to take on a world filled with eccentric goons, strippers dressed as mermaids, and even a possible government conspiracy.

This is a fun action comedy movie with a murder mystery and an anti-capitalism subtext.

Outland (1981) - a space western starring Sean Connery that has a set design very similar to Alien’s. Jerry Goldsmith did the score to both films as well.
