- I wonder if there's any academic discussion, or even papers with coined terminology in circulation, regarding the "forgotten reboot" phenomenon.
By that, I mean when an old and dormant franchise tries to reboot itself (often, again) and even if the new film (or show) has some success, it's largely forgotten over time compared to what it was intended to be rebooting.
It's actually hard for me to narrow down on a few specific examples of the lost-to-obscurity outright failed reboots, but did you know Rollerball (the 70s movie) had a post-2000s reboot? That's one example.
Disney has a habit of making live-action reboots of old animated films they gave a dull "reality" treatment to and most of them are already forgotten compared to the cartoons they came from.
Spider-Man's been rebooted so many times they made a movie about the rebooting! The "middle children" of those reboots seem to only exist as footnotes already.
No one seems to have asked for Scooby Doo's latest reboot (which is just an edgy nepo baby that removed Scooby Doo from Scooby Doo and wanted to turn Velma into a personal avatar) and while suits keep it going for now, it's not likely to be remembered either.
I even saw this happen with Prometheus and its sequel, which were not quite reboots but did retcon a lot of known lore, such as the outright stupid "real" origin of the Xenomorphs and the fate of the Space Jockeys that was so forgettable that I don't even remember its name. Alien(s) is still discussed, and those are not so much.
Similar deal with the Star Wars Disney Trilogy, which while technically not reboots functionally were because Abrams doesn't play well with other people's toys and had to kill/blow up most things that had been built up before he showed up so his "soft reboot" could happen. Come to think of it, the 2009 Trek film series had a similar issue.
Is there anything out there to discuss this "new and shiny and maybe even profitable reboot fades into irrelevance" phenomenon?
- Anyone seen the new horror film Talk to Me?
I haven't seen it yet, wondering if it's worth catching in a theater while it's still playing or just waiting to pirate it.
The movie has been getting good reviews but I understand it was made by some popular youtubers, which makes me somewhat hesistant to see it lol. But if it's good I kind of want to support it, since it's a smaller movie and not a major studio product.
- Chris Pratt Reportedly Ditching Marvel for a Billion Dollar Sci-Fi Franchise - Inside the Magicinsidethemagic.net Chris Pratt Reportedly Ditching Marvel for a Billion Dollar Sci-Fi Franchise - Inside the Magic
Chris Pratt is rumored to be leaving Marvel behind and getting on board a new mega-franchise in development.
>According to GFR, Chris Pratt is set to star in an adaptation of The Micronauts, a companion toy line to Hasbro’s Transformers. While his specific role is unclear at the moment, it would not be surprising if he was cast as the token human amongst otherworldly beings like Shia LaBeouf, Mark Wahlberg, Hailee Steinfeld, and Anthony Ramos before him.

- I watched Contact last night [Spoilers]
Wow, what a beautiful movie. It has strong themes that it isn't afraid to wear on its sleeves. I started crying when Ellie was traveling through space. "They should have sent a poet" just absolutely destroyed me.
I wish more people in STEM realized the importance of humanities. The way Carl Sagan clearly did. I'm not just saying that about this single line, but because the entire movie is wrapped up in this beautiful dance of scientific pursuit and the human experience.
Great movie, I highly recommend it. I know not everyone loves it, but I loved it.

- For this Sunday Slop Night, 9PM EST, it’s Jean-Pierre Melville’s caper Le Cercle Rouge (1970) and black lesbian comedy The Watermelon Woman (1996)! (CWs inside)
For this Sunday Slop Night, first up is Jean-Pierre Melville’s classic heist film Le Cercle Rouge (1970), which is often considered one of the best French movies of all time. A group of French thieves plot to steal some jewels; will they pull off the job? I guess we’ll find out. Everyone liked Melville’s Army of Shadows (1969), so this one seems like a safe bet. After that is Cheryl Dunye’s The Watermelon Woman (1996), allegedly the first feature film directed by an “out” black lesbian. It is a comedy about a black video store worker seeking to make a movie about a 1930s black actress; she finds love along the way. It has an extremely high rating on Letterboxd. Let’s give it a whirl.
We’ll start at 9PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies
