Why are gym rats called rats instead of Gorillas?

"Rat" insinuates that they are always there and can't get rid of them. A gym rat is someone who is always at the gym.
- OK, but how do you get rid of gorillas?
  
  Have a kid jump into their enclosure.

  I mean, bullets worked pretty well on the one...
I always thought it was because you go to the gym and hit the threadmill kind of like rats run on the wheel ?
- I always thought it was because they stink, eat garbage, and go eeeeep eeeeep eeeeeeeeep
- Yeah, that's where my brain always went to too.
