Mine began while I was studying computer science, and I've been in love with Linux since.
Oh no, please don't. I remember messing with interrupt addresses, putting in days of work to get a soundcard working and some hardware not working at all. I also accidentally wiped my entire harddisk.
It was fun and I had plenty of time at hand while in school. And I learned a lot and it got me started. But I don't think I need the 1999 Linux experience back 😉
No sweeter sound than "Hello, this is Linus Torvalds and I pronounce 'Linux', Linux" although in 90's Linux's defense, sound on 90's Windows was also a zoo. At least once it was working on RedHat, it worked. Same box with windows 95, every boot you'd fear the sound driver was magically broken again necessitating a full wipe and reinstall...
Little me had this. I got my feeling of success from this thing. Believe it or not, but getting one of these installs to work on a consumer i386 wasn't easy. It was uphill, both ways, bla bla bla they had just introduced python as this hip new systems language that they used in the installer - which was the style at the time, and still is, apparently. The circle of life I guess. In any case, my system drive couldn't be the slave. It had to be the master. What's that, nurse? Is it nap time? ZzZzZzZzZz...
