Apple Halts Effort to Build iPhone Hardware Subscription Service

that's not too much different than multi-year financing and buy backs/trade ins. But also I guess outright calling it a "subscription" would be awful optics. No doubt someone even less scrupulous like carriers will be doing this soon enough.
