Oh because they probably evolved from needing a place to keep writing tools. It's just 1700s bourgeois decadence.
- Old fashioned pens need to be held at a downwards angle or they might not write. A lot of modern pens as well. Plus it looks nice and it's basically just a block of wood with a hole and some polish.
So anyway I showed Jim from accounting the new 'stand and his poor ass was floored I'm in the corner office now

I can see the appeal. It clearly is the mark of someone highly important like Head of the Student Council.
i want one for my lamy fountain pens but it doesn't exist 😔
