Former fashion mogul Peter Nygard was found guilty of four counts of sexual assault in a Toronto court on Sunday, following a six-week trial.
Nygard, 82, was accused by five women of attacking them in a series of incidents from the 1980s to the mid-2000s. He was acquitted of one count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement.
A sentencing hearing will be set on November 21, prosecutors told CNN.
Heard about this on the radio today morning. Apparently his son said he's happy he'll never see the outside of a jail cell again. It wasn't a direct quote though, the radio host may have tweaked the message a bit.
Nygard consented to be extradited to the United States in 2021 but in 2023 he appealed against extradition, according to court documents reviewed by CBC.
Victims should have those that attacked them held accountable, but I feel it's a bit ridiculous to convict someone of something they did almost forty years ago.
I heard on the radio the other day that a woman came forward within the past few weeks and accused some rock star (I forget who) of assaulting her in the 70s when she was 17. She said she went with the band back to their hotel and on the way she said the dude "pushed her into a phone booth, started kissing her and feeling her up while other bandmates watched and laughed." People need to use some sense here, if you're a cute 17 year old, you agree to hang out with a rock band, and agree to go back to their hotel to " party", what do you think is going to happen? Do you think they're going to make you some popcorn and put on a movie? Of course not, the band members are probably drunk and/or on drugs to begin with and they've come to expect sex from women that want to hang out with them.
Yes, it really sucks that nothing happened to the accused when it happened, but to bring it up literally decades later with zero proof other than her account is a bit ridiculous. Holding on to that pain for decades only serves to make you feel weaker and for the attacker to have more power over you. Sexual assault shouldn't define your entire life. I feel it's akin to being held at gunpoint and then decades later saying "they robbed me, held a gun to my head and beat the shit out of me! It gave me PTSD for decades and ruined my life!".
If there are multiple people accusing one person (like in the case of Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein) then their case holds weight and the accused should be held accountable for the multiple people that they harmed.
How long do you have to wait for a sexual assault to no longer be a crime, in your opinion? Remember this is the law. You can't just say "when it feels like it". 50 years? 25? 7?
A decade should be a good amount of time to bring anyone up on any charges.
Imagine you punched someone in the head during a drunken bar fight, you didn't get hurt and the guy was still alive but on the floor, so you left. Now it's 30 years later and you're running for a high status political office. During the election time that dude that you punched in the head decades ago comes forward is like @TheOctonaut it's a horrible person! One time in a bar fight 30 years ago they punched me in the head and I got a concussion. They left me there to die! They should be charged with felony assault because of what they did to me!
Wouldn't you be a bit pissed? You probably forgot about him decades ago. And why is he bringing it up decades after it happens?
Your argument is that consent doesn't matter because you should have known better? Can a person change their mind? I really don't want my female friends and family members living in that world.
It's a touchy subject, that girl knew exactly what was going to happen when she went back with the band. They did what they always did with these girls, they fucked them then left then. There was no other proposition other than "we're going to fuck", she knew that was going to happen. She's more seeking revenge because he humiliated her. She put herself in that situation, if she hasn't been there it wouldn't have happen to her. You can shout "that's victim blaming!" all you want but it's the truth. Gene Simmons from Kiss said he's fucked thousands of random women after show, groupies have always been a thing.
