An Israeli military assault into the south of Gaza may lead to 1 million refugees, the head of the UN’s Palestine relief agency UNRWA has warned.
After a second overnight visit to Gaza where he met overwhelmed Palestinians, Philippe Lazzarini urged Israel to think through the consequences of an offensive in the south if the temporary truce in the fighting is not extended.
Lazzarini has become one of the most outspoken UN humanitarian officials in recent weeks, urging Israel to abide by the rules of law and proportionality.
Equally, Lazzarini says the concept of unilateral safe zones in the south for civilians, if they are not agreed with Hamas, is full of risk.
“Now, we are told, or we hear, that people should move further south-west if the offensive takes place in Khan Yunis […] but you cannot declare an area safe unilaterally in a war zone.”
Lazzarini has no compunction going beyond saying Israel should abide by the rules of war to asserting that it is not doing so – a step the US and British administrations decline to take – and he believes it will be up to an international legal body to determine the facts in future.

Hamas really fucked over Palestinians. All of this is their fault. Always choose diplomacy, kids. Don't doom your people by invading another country and slaughtering innocent people. It won't end well.
Not really, no effort was made for peace. Now the two state option no longer exists and they lose everything. This ranks up there with Russia for the largest military blunder of all time. Absolutely stupid move by Hamas.
In my opinion this is the fault of everyone who runs around recklessly killing civilians.
I don't care who is doing it, Hamas, IDF, some third party. If you pull the trigger or fire the incendiary or drop the bomb (or order those things to be done), then people dying as a result is your fault.
Funnily enough, Israel has killed a couple of times more innocent people. They are actively targeting civilian infrastructure, withholding humanitarian aid from reaching Gaza and actively targeting hospitals and hospital personnel. Not to mention the forceful displacement of people, etc.
So explain to me how this is any better? And why the collective punishment? And does this seem to you very diplomatic, because it doesn't to me.
