We will probably say "DDG would've saved that one!" for quite some time. Because he was insane on the line. Other than that he didn't contribute a lot though. Onana will concede a lot that DDG would've saved. But he will also put the team in so many good positions that DDG never would've.
They are so vastly different we shouldn't really compare them at all. But we will.
I'm not worried about the lobbed goals. Yesterday's was caused by a missed pass in the defense. To me he looks solid and he is so commanding in the box. Ddg was kind of bullied by attackers on corners and free kicks but Onana is a totally different story. And his distribution is leaps ahead of Ddg.
The other concern is high back line and that back line is not comfortable with high pressing team.
In an article (don't remember which one) Onana is not very good at dealing high ball. I didn't watch much his Inter games and preseason. So I wouldn't know it for sure.
Other than Onana, back line is vulnerable with high pressing teams.
not at all, if anything Onana is the best weapon against high pressing teams. Look at how high City pressed us in the FA Cup final, vs how high they pressed against inter in the CL final, City knew it wasn't of any use to press so they didn't
I think we shouldn’t read too deeply into preseason games. Players are regaining fitness, getting their head back in the game, the stakes are different, etc.
Regarding DDG… yeah It’s only natural that we’ll be drawing lots of positive and negative comparisons to him as he was our keeper for so long, but as long as it’s a net positive we’re good.
I remember one pre season under Sir Alex. We lost every game. It didn't look good. We proceeded to win the Premier League the same season. Never cared about results in pre season since.
Last year defensive record is good. Goal scoring is the problem. If Onana distribution and Hojlund goal scoring can compensate for more goal conceded, the team should be okay.
I hope we do not go back to pre Ten Hag defensive record.
