TIL that going from "Never heard of it" to "I occasionally encounter this in everyday life" is considered taking over the world.

It does seem like it's gotten a lot more popular with western audiences in the past like 2-3 years

I'd say absolutely. Even middle of nowhere Vermont has a cat cafe and 2 anime stores in the state. A state mind you is empty forest and peppered with old guys and out doorsmen. Even these icolated old farts consume anime.
