Recently switch companies bc my boss said,"I dont know what you did this year and can not give you a raise." I went into what I did, but he said it was too late.
Wow. That sounds like terrible management. If you don't know what your employees are doing for an entire year, you are failing at your job as a manager.
If your boss has no idea what your doing all year, it sounds like you can do whatever you want. Watch movies, play games, apply for other work...anything goes.
I think you misunderstood him; He was trying to say that he doesn't know how to give a raise, reasoning being that he is so incompetent in his job that he doesn't even know what you did that year.
Bonuses lead to a toxic work culture where people are only out for themselves.
You routinely see people act against the best interests of the customer and product because they set their goals 9 months ago before we found out we badly needed to change direction.
Recently left a big company that said they're only expecting -2 to +2% growth in the first quarter of 2024.
As a result they will not be giving raises this year and they will limit the promotions. In other news they hit all their targets in 2023 and will be raising the targets for 2024 because we had an incredible year. Thank you all for your big effort. We couldn't have made the 65 billion in Profit this year without you.
Screw em. I agonized over leaving my last job. I thought loyalty meant something. I worked there for 8 years.
Left my last job when my boss said: "let me give you some fatherly advice, sometimes it's not all about money. We can't give you a raise now and I don't know when we can". From one of the Resumes I sent that very evening I'm now making way more and am 90% remote. Also doing stuff I enjoy way more.
