Part of his shtick is that he puts a magnet on their car if they don't do the right thing. When he puts the magnet on the car they freak out and act like they've been personally assaulted. It's peak carbrain!

I hate cars as much as the next car hater, but I feel harping on people for not returning carts is not the right battle. I say this as an avid cart returner.
When I was a kid working retail I loved going out and returning the carts because it gets you outside and it sucks being stuck inside an entire shift
I hated it during those summer months though. They had us on 30 minute shifts and by the end of it I felt like I was dying of exhaustion. Not a whole lot of shade in that parking lot.
I agree with the idea behind cart narcs, but man he takes it too far.. arguably being more of a nuisance than the initial issue of not returning the cart.
The US is such a weird place. You deeply care about people returning their checks notes shopping carts, but maaan housing for people?!
If that person would spend their energy to try to change the actual issues instead of bothering people that slightly behave wrong, they may have already solved the "shopping cart crisis".
While I don't necessarily agree with the guys techniques, I think the putting yourself before everyone else attitude that is the cause of this behaviour is actually s big problem that causes all manner of other problems down the line. If people respect their fellow peoples society will function much better.
The thing is that it's absolutely illusory that we as humans evolve beyond that. Everyone behaves like this in one way or another. It is heavily based on our subjective standpoint.
In this case it's shopping carts. In your case it's (probably) eating meat. In my case it's using a lot of electricity. In your neighbor's case ...
So, now we can pick out scapegoats and collapse on them, or we can think about solutions that accept this fact.
Hint, if that person put that energy to promote a pledge based system he wouldn't have to make a clown out of himself and make people angry for no reason. He would solve the issue profoundly without having to constantly fight senslessly.

Both are solvable problems which our society chooses not to solve. I remember the first time outside the U.S. when I saw a shopping cart where you insert a coin to unlock it from the pack. Certainly not as easy to solve homelessness, right now outside some small but promising pilot projects for 'housing first' it appears most people are still stuck in the stage of complaining unhoused folks lower their property values.
This cartnarcs weirdo just harasses random people who are clearly struggling, you can’t do this ethically in a country with this kind of mental health crisis going on.
how are they struggling so much with a mental health crisis that they can drive to the store, grab a cart, fill the cart with groceries, pay, take cart back to car to fill car with groceries but the line is drawn at putting the cart back where it's not blocking people?
And don't get me wrong, i agree cartnarcs people are weird and borderline harassing, but why is it some kind of mental health crisis that we're blaming instead of just plain old arrogance? Do you always just see people being assholes in public and chalk it up to an assumption that they're struggling mentally?
