Which Lemmy instance is your new favorite, and why?

Since the lemmy.world admins here are refusing to clarify their own rules, selectively enforcing their vague rules, using communities for user counts before banning them and just being, well, spez-like, it's time to find a new home.

So far, I am liking lemmy.ml, but I still have a list I am going through.

Oh, before you go, make sure to file a CCPA or GDPR data deletion request. If they are so inclined to "stay legal", they can start with those items.

I went with sh.itjust.works personally, mostly because I liked the name, it's been good so far
- That was my first choice, but shit didn't just work, and I never got my verification email.
  
  Had the same issue. It’s apparently been a problem for some time now. I ended up using my back up email to sign up.
- Same thing for me with iusearchlinux.fyi, but before joining I had to leave lemmy.world after I had issues logging in. I could reset my password and login that way but I couldn't actually login using the form. It was an issue lemmy.world had at the time, but not iusearchlinux.fyi

Lemm.ee has been working well for me, but I haven’t been paying too much attention to the admins. I mostly left lemmy.world because of the downtime
- Yep, lemm.ee was my alt for when lemmy.world was down. Decided to go ahead and just make it my main account.

The vast majority of comments in here seem to be focused on the attitude of "why you trying to start shit"
But legitimately from an outside presiding perspective, which instances have people found to be decent, there seems to be a heap of Lemmy instances, each with their own rules and vibes, so what's the go?

I've chosen lemm.ee from the beginning. I like it so far.
- Me too. Its better. No downtime, no arbritary defeds.

This is new territory for most instance admin and a volunteer effort. If you haven't already, I'd encourage you to consider sharing constructive feedback with them as a first step instead.
As for finding new instances, it's generally recommended to visit https://join-lemmy.org/instances.

- They can do that! As a matter of fact, I support compliance with local regulations.
  The problem is, they aren't. They are picking and choosing laws to follow. Their instance is located in Germany, but yet, their marijuana legalization laws are only in draft: https://www.forbes.com/sites/dariosabaghi/2023/07/10/germany-unveils-draft-bill-to-legalize-cannabis/?sh=5ed53b322726
  They are using the justification that "some things are illegal in some countries" as grounds for community suspension, yet, they are picking and choosing.
  
  The admins are Dutch. Marijuana is legal in the Netherlands.

The real answer is to have multiple accounts spread around on different servers just in case one server goes tits up or bans content you like to see. You should be treating accounts here as having a limited shelf life anyway for good internet hygiene purposes.

lemmy.dbzer0.com, this was founded by key people at r/piracy.

I think it depends what you are looking for but I think a solid rule of thumb is to look at what communities you interact with the most and see what instances they belong to.
If piracy is specifically what you are after I'd go for dbzer0. If it's NSFW content that kind of complicates things.
I decided to give leminal.space a try and I like it. The admins are nice and quick to deal with issues and make posts about changes in the instance.
- That's the instance I was using originally until they had the domain name issue. I've had issues getting their website to load and for some reason it's on uBlock Origin's EasyList.

I was already considering switching over to kbin fully just because they're set up to interact with both Lemmy instances and Mastodon. Unfortunately the Mastodon side still feels a bit janky, but I'm hoping that'll change as time goes on.
Definitely not going to stay with an instance that pre-emptively bends over for corporate interests. That's one of the biggest reasons why I'm shifting away from Reddit in the first place.

  if you want to go "well technically..." there are some mastodon instances that are VC funded (mainly in japan, though i think there's like 1 or 2 in english), a few explicitly hosted by companies like vivaldi (the browser people) and medium, and misskey the software has built in support for running ads (though no western instance does that to the best of my knowledge)
  none of them are lemmy, but they can all talk to each other

I'm just happy to find a reddit alternative. Reddit decided to ban my account because I had two linked accounts and both accounts made a comment on the same post accidentally, because I forgot my main profile has already commented.. I got perma banned for what they said was cheating the system?!?! I made a two new emails and two new accounts and instantly banned on those too... Dude I was and am pissed, because my accounts were four years old with great interactions and subs... With no recourse to appeal... Found Lemmy.world by chance, today.. and so far I am really happy with it. I saw that the app Boost will be coming out with its own app to host lemmt and I am all for it.

This instance is a "open to everyone" instance.

lemm.ee is pretty great (may be biased), you should try kbin.earth, its compatible with lemmy!

You say a lot of things, but do you have evidence of them? Or is it just related to them doing what's actually required to avoid giving the people DDoSing them another means of taking them down, fake DMCAs based on communities hosted in other instances that promote breaking the law?
And before anyone gets any idea, if they tried doing the same because they are mad, expect for it to backfire. Spectacularly. As in you might want to think of moving directly into the servers hosting those communities. And that's not a threat, that's because anyone with a brain can read, specially those in the legal world who have jobs because there is literally a separate aspect of legal proceedings involved collecting evidence called discovery where lots of people with brains are able to read and understand the same conversations you and me are able to understand for instances that might indicate aiding, abetting, and collusion and discern them from the false accusations thereof.

You pay their legal fees in full, then, if someone comes after them because of the content make available via their site. Or host your own instance and stop bitching.
- It's illegal to talk about piracy and shrooms? I can see posts getting deleted for directly trafficking in pirated stuff or if someone was trying to openly sell sketchy drugs.
  Anything that is allowed on this site could be a target for legal action. Even their unverified access to porn is grounds for legal action in most places.
  You need to look at the complete picture of the bias that is involved.
  
  It's still their community for which they were the administrators. Don't like their administrative decisions? Don't use their instance. Then you aren't beholden to their guidelines but still get to participate in communities resident to that home server.
