how do I interact with a community I cannot connect to? Would I need to manipulate the URL in order to "access" it, although this gives the error page not found, of course. (Not the best method of poking another community.)
But that's interesting that it takes some time to sync or whatever. Unfortunately, this immediately creates the illusion that some communities don't exist, and causes people to create a double community. This just happened to me. I created c/whatstheword on my instance...

are you using the website, or an app? i can see the community, but not the posts (presumably because they aren't synced) (forgot i have lemmy.world blocked).
do you not see the community landing page at all? is there no 'subscribe' button? subscribing is the best way to trigger the sync job; i could try doing it for you, but i want to see if it's possible for you to do it first.
there was no subscribe button. Now it's working, as per top comment. On lemdro.id it is still unreachable: copy and paste the following in your browser (do not click, it may be split into two, which is hardly noticeable) https://lemdro.id/c/whatstheword@lemmy.world
Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !whatstheword@lemmy.world
i don't know about lemdroid. federation could be backlogged for aforementioned reasons.
the link you gave works fine for me in Firefox: clicking, dragging or pasting. the 404 likely indicates that lemdroid hasn't discovered that community yet; probably because it's still waiting to finish asking lemmy.world about it.
are you sure about that? on FF if I click on the first part of the link it redirects me to lemdroid, but clicking the part after the /c/, redirects me to dbzer0. Also different part of the link lights-up when hovering over it
Sometimes it has to do with if a user from your instance subscribes to the community
You're on a small instance where most of the users I see are brand new troll accounts, I don't think there's very many active users who maintain accounts and subscribe to communities.
So there's probably lots your not seeing.
You may want to think of migrating to another instnace. Doesn't have to be world, but it sounds like your problems is due to a low user base on your instance.
yeah well I also don't wanna join a big and slow instance like lemmy.world. Also, the theming options on dbzer0 are the best.
But it seems like this problem won't ever go away for small instances, unless someone "pokes" it, i.e. goes to the community. (Subscribing is kinda hard considering it's still inaccessible)
Lol, what? db0 is a medium sized instance ran by one of the former /r/piracy admins when they jumped ship during the exodus, and it's reasonably active with a decent amount of real users and a very active owner.
World is by far the largest instance by a huge margin. It is such an outlier that it effectively should be disregarded in comparisons with other instances.
Lol ok I get where you are coming from now, dipshit.
Edit: Commenter did not provide any supporting evidence for brand new troll accounts on our instance, because there aren't any. Clearly, they don't like piracy though, so I've done them a favor and removed dbzer0 from their feed.
