KDE Connect should only enable downloading files from allowed directories, right? [issue report found, may be very old notifications]
  • Fairly certain, as I hadn't downloaded anything on my phone when away from my PC that would have produced a notification to mirror. Also, sorry, I should have mentioned from the start that I typically run my phone in Do Not Disturb and Silent to minimize any notifications whatsoever.

On further digging I did notice that it looks as though the files mentioned in the notifications may have been downloads, but from literally years ago in, I think, every case (e.g. from 2018!). I don't think I even had Connect installed back then to have caught those notifications. 🤨

  • KDE Connect should only enable downloading files from allowed directories, right? [issue report found, may be very old notifications]

I was working on some stuff on my PC and stepped away for a bit, and on returning noticed notifications on it that some files had been downloaded via KDE Connect from my phone. I was using my phone at the time, and didn't send the files.

I know that you can quietly download files from a phone with its paired device (i.e. no notification on the phone, nor prompting permission) from allowed directories, but these files weren't from those directories, so...What may have happened here?

    Glitched notifications, or something else?

Also, the downloaded files weren't anywhere on my PC, so... 😕

edit: I found an issue report I think may be what I was seeing: KDE Connect spams the desktop with a torrent of old notifications.

Finding out why the printer needs yellow ink
  • Is this ever noted in any of the documentation, outside of some fine print, with the printer to let someone know that it's being done? If your product is secretly leaving indicators for anyone aware of the indicators to track your actions in some way, that's problematic in my opinion.

Given a printer is arguably a lesser issue anymore, but the same idea applies with other tech.

  • What do you take more time with when creating a digital persona/fictional character, name or appearances?
  • Supposing it's not a throwaway to look into stuff, I get amusingly stuck on avatars/appearances sometimes. Like do I use some character I like from something for an avatar/reference, or do I toss something together that's kinda silly?

Lot of times it's just vibes

Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?
  • I feel less conflicted about talking up community-built things than business-built things, since the former can use the attention and typically lacks any sort of marketing or other means of promoting themselves. Businesses don't need any more of either given they often literally have marketing divisions or can afford to hire marketing firms.

  • Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?
  • But the fact that you feel like you’re an ad suggests that maybe you’re doing it too often.

It's not that I feel like that, as I don't talk much about these things, and I don't because even the little I might sometimes feels that way. It's more of a conflicted feeling than feeling outright like an ad, as in that it can come across as promotional even if it may simply be talking about a good experience.

  • Which animals do you think humans would live most harmoniously with, or already are living with (mostly), without making them into livestock?
  • Honestly I'd only thought of pets after the fact and thought the question was already pretty longwinded, so decided to leave it out. The rest of what you cover is on track with what I was wondering about though!

I was also thinking in terms of a more "natural", for lack of a better word, coexistence when asking without making them livestock. Less planned interactions, more as they come and go sort of interactions.

Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?
  • Your last sentence gets at part of what I was thinking in writing this question. I see where others are coming from when talking among friends or not awkwardly dropping in products/titles, but it's that limbo space when either talking among acquaintances or online with strangers where it gets murkier to me.

I think some of this also comes from the posting culture you see if you browse microblogging platforms, even apart from influencer-types, which I think comes from the constraints of a lower character count to some degree.

  • Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?
  • This is mostly a symptom of being online too much and seeing enough ads to think critically about them.

Would this apply even in the case of an avid ad-blocking person? At least that's my situation, so what I'm seeing is less the ad-ridden web and more what remains, which is still a lot of discussion of commercial stuff.

I guess I'm thinking along the lines of the "What the hell is water?" story in a way.

  • Do others feel somewhat conflicted talking positively about commercial goods/services?

Sometimes I feel like if I do so I'm basically serving as an ad, and I don't really care for that, especially if later I find that the business was scummy in some ways (which is often the case, especially later as it changes leadership/ownership).

If you do, how do you deal with it?

Would it be okay to also use this community to promote developing communities and instances?
  • The two communities you listed seem more adequate to promote existing communities, I’ve done it in the past when reviving a community.

The newcommunities one in particular didn't take issue with it? That was part of why I was asking, as I didn't think they would appreciate posts about existing communities, but if they don't mind then I take it it's a non-issue.

On the last part, it may not hurt to see if different AskLemmy communities would be up for including them in their sidebars, and maybe featured posts with pointers to Lemmyverse and !lemmy411@lemmy.ca if they don't have them already.

Would it be okay to also use this community to promote developing communities and instances?

Perhaps after some amount of time having announced themselves over in !newcommunities@lemmy.world and !communitypromo@lemmy.ca, or...I don't know if there are communities for instances (the fediverse communities, presumably?), but likewise for them?

The combination of a promotional space and discussion for helping grow communities/instances could help ensure there's always some activity keeping this community visible to those seeking help.

[Low priority] Where's Lemmee's lil' site icon disappeared to?

They've run off somewhere the past few days I think, and I tried a hard refresh of the site on desktop with no change. Also looked via app and the lil' Lemmee's disappeared there as well.

It's nbd, but has had me wondering.

Where does the money from sales of products of defunct companies tend to go...?

I know this will vary a lot with each product, but I'm curious about all the different weird ways this goes down in different industries.

Whether we're talking movies/music/books/games/shows, random toys or as seen on tv things that there must be a bunch of failed companies involved with or whatever else, I'm curious to know!

Are there ActivityPub servers that can see others without necessarily connecting to them to better enable connections?

By this I sort of mean like, in the case of Lemmy for example, something like a built-in Lemmyverse of sorts.

It wouldn't be pulling in data yet from other instances, but it would enable seeing that their communities were out there so you could then tell your server you'd like to subscribe/follow/etc. their community/channel/account.

Tbh despite having been around the fediverse for awhile, I'm not sure how else ActivityPub servers were supposed to have these different things found to start with.

What are some obscure digital things you think others might enjoy or find useful?

Things in the broad sense of software, games, books, websites, music, etc. Obscure relative to both what's widely discussed on social media but also what you see here pretty often (i.e. Linux/Fediverse stuff).

How much maintenance do you find your self-hosting involves?

I recognize this will vary depending on how much you self-host, so I'm curious about the range of experiences from the few self-hosted things to the many self-hosted things.

Also how might you compare it to other maintenance of your other online systems (e.g. personal computer/phone/etc.)?

How much do people still follow entertainment media reviews today?

I know there's occasionally some backlash to reviews that go against a broader positive reception to some media, but do that many people still follow reviews to decide what to check out?

Edit: Adjusted title to specify "entertainment media"

What's the draw of watching/following streamers?

I've watched some here and there, but having to try to catch them when they stream has put me too much in the mind of old tv and catching shows when they air. Watching the recording afterward is maybe good for some white noise, but it's clearly not the intended experience I think.

Which web interfaces, if any, enable keyword filtering or following?

The first function is probably familiar from some other interfaces: filter out posts according to certain keywords.

The second is possibly a little less familiar, but the idea would be like following hashtags on other federated microblogging services like Misskey or Mastodon or the like, except instead using keywords since Lemmy currently doesn't support hashtags.

Emphasis on the "or" here, as an interface that has only one of either is of interest!

I'm generally curious and/or trying to get a sense of people's views.
