What are your Android hidden gem apps
  • AnyList. I've tried many list apps and this one is easily the best. Not FOSS disclaimer. The free version has very minimal ads, it has a great, intuitive UI, you can create custom list types and item categories, it has built in quantity and unit of measure fields, and you can share/sync a list with others by email address. The amount of features included in the free version is uncommon in the market without getting more harassed by advertisements. I hope it doesn't change in the future; it's remained relatively unchanged for the 3 years I've been using it!

  • Anon on credit scores
  • What were your savings, if you don't mind? I managed to get a house priced at 274k this year with only 20k saved, but a really good credit score, and about 100k income between me and my partner.

  • ‘It’s the same daily misery’: Germany’s terrible trains are no joke for a nation built on efficiency
  • Optimization feels a lot less optimal when it leads to enshittification. I have worked on the tech side of accounting systems in the US for the last 10 years and can say that American companies have largely embraced this category of innovation as well.

  • The Frasier Revival is out now! What are your thoughts?

Critical reviews are divided with some panning and some praising the initial episodes. What are your thoughts after seeing the first two?

I'm going to buy a House!
  • Man, I saw houses in Portland that were smaller than 900 sq ft, did not have central AC, no appliances, and had water damage and wires ripped from the walls above $200k. That's not the case in all markets, but it is for a great many. Get on Zillow and start looking around as if you were in the market. Ask yourself if you'd be willing to offer some of these asking prices.

  • I'm going to buy a House!
  • I just bought a house in the eastern part of the Midwest in the US. The tax assessment in 2021 for the house was about 193k. In 2023, it's 275k. That is a 30% increase in 2 years. During those 2 years, nobody lived in the house, and no improvements were made in that time. Neat! My mortgage is still about the same as my rent for a 2br apartment in Oregon earlier this year. I suspect the Midwest is about to start hating Oregonians as much as Oregonians hate Californians soon!

  • I used to work in a restaurant.I got paid $2 less than minimum wage and split tips with the rest of the staff, guaranteed to make at least minimum wage. What would have MAXIMIZED my income would be getting minimum wage as a base pay + tips. All this system does is subsidize the cost of labor for restaurant owners. I get it, running a successful restaurant is tough business if you're not loaded. Running ANY successful business is tough. Tipping systems favor the business owners primarily over staff and consumers.

  • What bugs the heck out of you at work but doesn't seem to bother your coworkers?
  • I'm living the inverse of your experience right now. Just started a new job that requires 3 days in the office after having worked several years fully remote. I sit next to a full wall-length window and yet am being battered by soul-crushing overhead fluorescents. Time to figure out where the controls to the lights near me live in the breaker. I hear the COO likes all of the lights on so he can "feel like there are more people in the office." Bully for him.

  • What's your favorite music trope?
  • I like it when a chorus gets built up more on each repetition, either with the addition of more instrumental parts, new harmonies or background vocals, or a beat change that brings up the intensity.

Similarly, I like when that same effect happens within 2 halves of a chorus. Example of one I heard recently is the chorus of the song "Breathing" by ELLEGARDEN. The 2nd half adds a higher vocal harmony + a picked lead guitar line that open up the sound a bit and just give it a nice little emotional boost.

This might not be everyone's cup of double, short, decaf, non-fat, low-foam latte, but I'm hard-pressed to think of a more inventive Frasier project!

    Frasier (2023) | Teaser | Paramount+

2 episodes will premiere on Paramount+ on October 12th. Subsequent episodes will appear on Thursdays for a total of 10 episodes in the 1st season. Are you excited? Nervous? Skeptical? Enthusiastic? Share your thoughts below!

Personally, I think the teaser is a lovely homage to the original intro, and it gives me a little optimism (especially the little nod to the line, "Oh, what fresh hell is this?").

The Reboot: what are your thoughts so far about the upcoming Frasier revival?

While I'm weary of the fact so little of the original cast will return as regulars, the newcomers look like interesting choices that are fairly unknown. I'm particularly interested to see the dynamic between Kelsey Grammar and Nicholas Lyndhurst (who will play Alan, an old college friend of Frasier's).

The tidbits I've read from those who've been to tapings sound promising, but who can say what's an honest preview vs. a guerilla marketing campaign these days.

Despite my trepidation, I will absolutely be watching the premiere whenever it does come out (possibly delayed to the current strikes).

What are your thoughts based on what we know so far?

I'm Listening : A Frasier Podcast with Anita Flores

Thought I'd post this episode of a Frasier podcast featuring writer, comedian, etc. John Hodgman. It's fun listening to someone in the entertainment industry nerd out about the show (and nerd out he does - there are Excel spreadsheets involved).

This podcast unfortunately is no longer being made, but it's a nice, lighthearted diversion for even the most discerning fans.
