Why we don't have 128-bit CPUs
  • Yes you are 100% right, and I did consider level 3 cache as a better measure, because that allows communication between cores without the need to go through RAM, and cache generally has a high hit rate. But this number was surprisingly difficult to find, so I settled on the data bus.
Anyways it would be absolutely fair to call it 256bit by more than one measure. But for sure it isn't just 64 bit, because it has 512 bit instructions, so the instruction set isn't limited to 64 bit. Even if someone was stubborn enough to claim the general instruction set is 64 bit, it has the ability to decode and execute 2 simultaneous 64 bit instructions per core, making at least 128 bit by any measure.

  • Finnish startup says it can speed up any CPU by up to 100x using a tiny piece of hardware with no recoding
  • Why is this bullshit upvoted?
Already the first sentence, they change from the headline "without recoding" to "with further optimization".
Then the explanation "a companion chip that optimizes processing tasks in real-time"
This is already done at compiler level and internally in any modern CPU for more than a decade.

It might be possible to some degree for some specific forms of code, like maybe Java. But generally for the CPU this is bullshit, and the headline is decidedly dishonest.

  • New evidence US blocked Ukraine-Russia peace deal, and a new Ukrainian excuse for walking away
  • How is that even remotely relevant to Russia invading Ukraine completely unprovoked in 2014, and again in 2022?
If you side with Nazi Russia, that's your choice. But it's self destructive and insane.
Because of Putins imperialistic dreams, Russia will now have poverty as the Soviet era, so in that way Putin will achieve his goal of bringing Russia back to the lack of greatness of the Soviet Empire.

  • Why we don't have 128-bit CPUs
  • At less than a tenth the size, this is actually a better explanation than the article. Already correcting the fact that we do at the very beginning.
If you absolutely had to put a bit width on the Zen 4, the 2x128 bit data bus is probably the best single measure totaling 256 bit IMO.

  • Donald Trump complains about being called "cognitively impaired"
  • It's one thing that Trump believes that telling an elephant and Giraffe apart makes him a genius, the truly horrible thing is that a lot of Americans agree, and are prepared to elect him president of USA.

  • Russia says U.S. is responsible for deadly Ukrainian attack on Crimea
  • No Russia is completely responsible, if they hadn't occupied it, Ukraine wouldn't have to fight to get it back. Fuck Russia your rhetoric is stupid. The Russians are the Nazis and Putin will die in a bunker.

  • India's May oil imports: Russia at record high, Saudi lowest in 10-mth
  • This is working as intended, Ukraine attacks refineries, which makes it necessary for Russia to export crude oil at lower prices.
This way Ukraine can hit the Russian economy, without causing oil prices to increase on the global market, something Ukrainian allies have expressed concern about.
It is allegedly already causing difficulties for Russia to refine enough oil for their needs for their war against Ukraine, and that makes it necessary for Russia to export crude oil and buy some of it back at higher prices after it has been refined.

  • What is your favourite shell to use
  • IDK if federations doesn't work, I already wrote to another response that I use Bash.
Since the Amiga in the 80's I considered CLI windows and Shell as the same thing, because they kind of were on the Amiga, as there was only 1 shell, and a CLI window was also called Shell. But that was obviously a misunderstanding I just never got quite rid of.

Russia's Kharkiv offensive – what is the plan?

    >Russia has launched an offensive into the Kharkiv region, and it has created a lot of alarmist news reports. In reality it is difficult to see what Russia's plan is, and it is not self-evident that it is a smart use of resources. In this video I discuss whether we might be seeing a return to the fragmented command structures that Russia had in the beginning of the war.

4 months durability for an $800 phone!

My old $200 Motorola G9 Power phone lasted almost 4 years with only very minor scratches. Obviously in that period I have dropped it a few times getting out of the car, where the phone sometimes work itself out of my pant pocket while I drive, and then it slips out when I get out of the car. But no problem on my previous phones, despite the Moto had cheap Panda glass front.

Then I bought my $800 glass back Xiaomi 13T Pro in January, and I loved the phone for the camera and good specs. But alas after only 4 months, and single drop of just 30 cm while sitting on the porch, the glass back immediately cracked! The back now looks like an ugly mess, and the high water resistance is very likely gone too.

For sure the last time I buy a phone with a glass back!!!

I wonder why glass back is so popular, and I curse the media for reviewing the Samsung Galaxy S2 as "feeling a bit cheap", because the back was synthetic, and drop tests showed it was 10 times as durable as the iPhone with its glass back.

Samsung did it right in the beginning, glass backs are a curse.

PS: I don't use condoms for my phones, if they need that for daily use, it's an obvious design flaw!!!

The glass back is supposedly there to give a premium feel to the phone. But because it's fragile, people have to use a cover, but with the cover, the premium feel of a glass back is gone anyways? How is glass back not a design flaw?

    EDIT FOR CLARIFICATION:

I am not clumsy, that's why I believe the phone should be able to last without cover. This was the first time the phone slid out of my packet, and I've NEVER dropped it out of my hands. One 30 cm slip and it's broken. Where for instance my Moto had maybe 4-6 in all over the years, and remained unscathed, apart from some tiny scratches. The sliding out of pocket does occur maybe a couple of times per year, but it's a low drop, and the phone should absolutely be able to handle that tiny drop, as it's an item for everyday use. I've also never had problems with scratches on my screen on any phone, which is the reason people use screen protectors I guess, which I don't either, because they are ugly, for instance they create a tiny ring around the camera, and they feel awful IMO, my phone came with it, and it took exactly 10 seconds for me to decide to remove it, because I could feel the edge of the screen protector when using the phone. But please stop with the dropping my phone regularly comments! Just because I dropped my Moto a few times (slid out of pocket) over almost 4 years! Always from low height, which it should be able to handle a few times.

Why do Google searches not give maps links anymore?

It used to be very convenient that when searching for something that had a geographic location, Google searches used to show a small map which linked to Google maps when pressed. Now all I get i a tiny useless map, that doesn't have any of the feature of Google maps, and often I don't even get that. Anyone know why that is? And if there is a fix? I use Firefox, but I'm guessing it's independent of browser, unless Google is up to their shenanigans again. I've added Google maps as search option, which luckily is dead easy in Firefox to do. At the same time I added Open Street Map, to minimize Google map use to maybe show them they are losing traffic.

    EDIT:

I think this is the reason as u/garrett@lemm.ee writes:

    https://www.youtube.com/@Thunderf00t

I considered hard weather this really belongs in Technology, but came to the conclusion that exposing a scammer that is considered a tech genius, does belong here. Because debunking a technology company is as important as showing it, when it's considered valid.

That said, I believe most people here are already aware that Musk is not to be trusted blindly. But just how bad it really is, may be news to some.
