MessagEase going subscription based
  • The downloads list suddenly won't load anymore. I was going to get the last version before they added the notice to get pro.

  • Give it time. You get used to it. Eventually, you will probably type more accurately than you did before. A qwerty or any full keyboard like that does not belong on a small screen. :-)

  • Shunned in computer age, cursive makes a comeback in California
  • I'm 40 and our teacher explained why cursive was a thing in elementary school. I figured we were learning it so we could sign our name.

Take computers out of the picture. How long have we been using ballpoint pens? Cursive was obsolete even before computers took over how we write.

  • Google Will Turn Off Cookies for 30 Million People on January 4
  • This is not a great article. So many words with so little information. In other articles I found it sounds like Chrome is finally getting third party cookie blocking. Other browsers have had thir for years. Its nothing new.

  • Quest owners can use Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in VR, but do you really want to?

  • Xenomorph Android malware now targets U.S. banks and crypto wallets
  • With Lineage OS, you probably can. It also seems to becoming more logical for common users to wipe and reinstall occasionally. Not that it is easy to do. It just seems like a lot of malware is hitting phones and that is likely to get worse.

  • California workers who cut countertops are dying of an incurable disease
  • That is sad to hear. I live in an area where almost no one wore masks. Even at the hight of the pandemic. Our local pharmacies got a bunch of N95s for free to give away free. There was supposed to be a limit but since no one was using them they would give me a lot of extra. I'm guessing they still have boxes stacked up somewhere.

Its also sad that this could have probably been prevented by using a wet saw with water hooked up. Anyone who has cut stone once without a wet saw walks away knowing they shouldn't have been breathing that.

  • Avoiding tunnel vision when debugging
  • Awesome! I found out this worked for me years ago when I was a lone dev. I would walk around muttering to myself. Glad to know there is a term I can use now!

  • Avoiding tunnel vision when debugging
  • Sometimes I step away from the screen and talk out is happening in my head.

Often times my coworkers and I will ask each other for help. Much of the time the person explaining will see the problem as they explain it to the other person. Usually before the other person has a chance to get the full explanation.

  • Which is the least no fuss mainstream phone manufacture?
  • Most phone manufactures create their own version of Android. Usually they are pretty full of useless junk and a ton of UI changes. By saying "mostly Android" you're urually saying "mostly [original] Android".

  • Huntington Beach City Council approves banning mask and vaccine mandates
  • Where I live, there were mandates but no one enforced it and no one cared. During the worst of the pandemic it was odd to see someone with a mask. Some stores would have a sign saying you would not be allowed in unless you had a mask. Then you get in and no one had a mask on, not even employees.

I wonder what it was like in Huntington Beach.

  • I've been blocking ads for so long that actually seeing them feels perverse
  • What a great way to put it. Years ago my wife was annoyed when I started blocking ads because it was effecting streaming on some apps. Now if an ad gets through look out!

When we see ads, it is so annoying. Page loads are clunky and games blast you with ads.

Any RPG and/or Strategy games for broad audience?

A friend and I love in depth games but want to include our families, some younger and some not super drawn to scifi or fantasy.

Pandemic has been a great game for us but its nice to have some other options.

Are there any interesting RPG (DnD style) or stategy games that you would suggest?

A useful way to integrate function keys in to layout on Moonlander or Ergodox?

Has anyone found a good way to include function keys (i.e. F1 - F12) in to their layout on the Moonlander or Ergox EZ?

I have tried adding double tap to the numbers row but find myself accidentally double tapping while typing (e.g. 1223). I tried tap and hold but found that it would often end up detecting a held key (i.e alt+F4 F4 F4).

I am looking through Moonlander layouts in Oryx but am not finding any good ones. It looks like many don't even include the function keys.

Edit: I'm looking for a good way to do Ctrl+Alt+F[num] or Alt+F[num]. Without having to switch layers... if there is even a good way.

What is the kbin logo? Just a visually appealing logo or something more?

The name kbin is derived from sbin in Linux (source is a comment by @ernest). Is the logo at all related to sbin? It kind of looks like a forward slash.

I tried searching but turned up nothing. Sorry if this has been answered already.

It is not Lemmy or kbin, it is the fediverse.

I don't think many people understand that if they use Lemmy or kbin, they are posting to the fediverse. There are other platforms and will be more to come. Referring to a post on "Lemmy" or "kbin" is like saying you saw a post on your Windows or Mac computer.

We should be referring to it as...

    • I saw it on the fediverse.
    • Hey fediverse users ...
    • A thread on the fediverse...

New terms may emerge but referring to the platform seems weird, almost ignorant.

edit: A better example is email. You wouldn't assume everyone is on Hotmail because that is the email provider you use. You say I'm sendingan eamail, not I'm sending a Hotmail.
