Debian used to be so good. What happened!?
  • As someone who has used it for a few years. Incorrect. I had one upgrade issue (from KDE 5 to 6). Other than that. Smooth. For the Plasma upgrade, just change to default them before upgrade and upgrade from command line, not terminal window.

  • Populus (1998) & "god games"
  • I played this. A great game. That era and Bullfrog in particular were incredible. Dungeon Keeper is one of the best games I played. Theme Hospital and Theme Park were great. It was the golden age of strategy games. Age of Empires 2, Heroes of Might and Magic 3. Red Alert games. Railroad Tycoon. I have no idea why this type of game became unpopular.

I strongly recommend Dungeon Keeper 1 (ideally gold with Deeper Dungeons add on) and Theme Hospital. Can get them on Gog.

  • Mozilla acquired Anonym, an ad start-up
  • I think the important thing is consent to use data. If I can control what data I share with them, it isn't the end of the world. If I choose to not, and it's honoured, then this is a good thing. I'd prefer this approach funding development to Mozilla not being able to compete.

Mozilla is a far superior company to Google.

  • What do you think of this prediction?
  • So you're saying if Valve enshittified, they wouldn't fork and try to capitilise on that market?

They probably do not see the point right now as Valve have it sewn up. Lemmy grew when Reddit scored own goals. When Valve do, opportunities are there and would be taken.

  • What do you think of this prediction?
  • Maybe, but DRM free content isn't exactly shareholder value...

It's better shepherded than Epic. They probably don't fill the space because Steam do it better, but you invest more if the return is higher.

The case I'm referring to is in the future if Steam badly enshittified.

  • What do you think of this prediction?
  • Proton is open source. Anyone can pull it together and integrate it. Gog have been doing DRM free games for a while, they'll be quite keen to fill this niche. Epic probably won't care. If none do, someone will want to.

  • "PM, want a cracker?"
  • Do questions really need to be answered outside of work time? Are blockers identifiable in advance so a plan can be put in place. Not many things need to be done outside work hours and team members can cover vacation if something desperately needs to be done.

  • How is everyone handling the 2FA requirement for GitHub?
  • Codeberg, or failing that, GitLab, or BitBucket. Allowing MS to control all FLOSS software, means they might probably secretly get consent to use your code for copilot training without respecting licences. I have no idea if this happens, or might in the future, as I ain't reading the terms of service for something I do not use, however, I have little trust for them enough for air on the side of caution.

  • We're Watching Facebook Die
  • Which they could also report on. The fact they're removing a standard metric they've relied on, rather than relegate it, shows they have fear this metric is going to be detrimental to publish. You can fairly safely assume it's going to go down. It's no longer sexy, tik tok is killing it, and most that would be on it, are, and are discovering it's not greatly beneficial to them and spending less time on it. It is the start of the decline. How long and how fast is the thing we do not know.

  • De-Google Your Life - Part 1 (Linus Tech Tips)
  • Nothing says innocent like threatening with lawsuits...

It's got big corp, reputation at all costs over doing the right thing vibes. The latter is reflective and willing to improve even if things aren't bad, but could be better.

People will make their minds up based on how much they trust them. Personally, I don't.

Some folks recommended SimpleMobileTools such as calendar. After it was sold off, a fork was created by one of their contributors, and it's released on F-droid now.

Wanted to give this update in case folk were curious.

I'm sure that's true, and I can wildly speculate that all the current anti-trust attention was a factor too.

Many said we couldn’t stop it. We, like many, applied pressure, and they backed the fuck off.

We have no room for complacency now though. Google cannot be allowed to dictate web standards. Firefox needs to eat into that Chromium market share.

    Never forgive. Never forget.

    Looking for Moderators

    Hi, all.

We've grown considerably since rebuilding the sub (see https://lemmy.ml/post/2262830). Active monthly users 150 -> 380. 3.5k -> 5.42k subs. It seems to be growing organically now, and the higher we go, the more people will stumble across it. There is always a need to get away from Google, and hopefully our community can help people with this.

If you'd like to join us to help moderate so we have folk in place as we need them, that would be awesome.

If you are interested. Please send a message about why you think you'd be good for the role, and also an example post/comment in this community previously.

    Thanks,

    CrypticCoffee

Apologies for multiple posts today. I hadn't planned on doing so. I stumbled across this and it communicates effectively what this is. As many are confused by this, it could be a reasonable bit of information.

We have been busy this past month! We released KDE Gear 23.04, which now contains most of the Plasma Mobile applications. The development of Plasma Shell based on Qt6 is progressing.

A few months out of date, but I'm keen on the project and waiting on the latest installment. As content here is a little dated, it cannot hurt to get this here so folk can dig into it more.

It does seem that using Chrome (or Chrome based browsers) is just going to going to perpetuate this. Firefox has never been more important IMHO.

    Community direction and mod update

Hi all, I acquired moderator to recover this sub. I was dreading helping to build the community only for it to get spammed out of existence. This is our sub and we need to figure out the best way of going about it, what it should contain and what it shouldn't contain.

I have no desire of being sole mod, and perhaps not at all long term, and I would like people to join us.

I'm reluctant to dive into promoting people and regret it, and don't want to hold off too long and leave that all to me, so I'm open to feedback or challenge on how we do this. Maybe it's not my call at all. A few people may shine through as good people to take this forward and help build this community.

Please feel free to give your views on what this community should or shouldn't be. I will link to privacy and relevant communities so we can keep this one focussed.

A big shout out to comcreator@lemmy.world at https://lemm.ee/post/704704 for helping to avoid fragmentation. They probably have a claim for mod if there is no objections.
