What's the easiest song or melody someone with not experience can play on an acoustic guitar?
  • Keep trying! You can do it, it just takes time and it very likely won't click in an evening.

    Practice that change super slow going from a G chord to a D chord. Four strums on each chord, taking as much time as you need to make them sound as good as you can. It will sound bad for a little while, but eventually, you will do it perfectly, and you will do it perfectly again and again and again until doing it wrong is more difficult than doing it well.

    Keep at it, you will do it!

  • Ultra-processed foods need tobacco-style warnings, says scientist
  • That's right! It's close to being a whole food, but it's just a bit off.

  • Have you gone down any rabbit holes that gave you an existential crisis?
  • Toxoplasma Gondii - a parasite bred through cat poop. It is extremely common, easily spread through undercooked food (especially meat). It can affect your mental state to engage in riskier and more self destructive behaviors. Testing for Toxoplasma Gondii is not standard, but it is believed that 10-15% of the US population is infected with the parasite at any given time.

  • I took a measure from a friend's house in east Tennessee the other day. 40-some percent humidity (really good!), but 88F in the shade, 93F in direct sun, and 116F when standing over blacktop.

  • Star Trek Is Showing More Love To Scott Bakula’s Enterprise
  • I've only made it to season 2, so I'm holding out hope that it gets better, but lazily progressive seems to describe it pretty well.

    The one that really rubs me rough it how Tilly is very clearly coded to be some type of neuro divergent, probably autistic, but also only when it is convenient and quirky and will not interfere with the plot too much.

    Her suddenly being very socially adept when the plot needed her to pretend to be an evil commander or whatever, and she dropped all of her character flaws to make it happen just felt so out of character and lazy.

    Also the scenes with Spock and "child abuse bad" at the start of the red angel arc was very ham fisted.

    I much preferred how SNW handled the "our wonderful society is supported by horrible child labor and death" arc. Still about as subtle as a brick, but it at least felt like an attempt was made to encode a message, and not just saying it at the viewer like a pre-school cartoon recapping the message of the episode.

  • In 2024 we are now further from the release of the song 1985 than 1985 was from 1985
  • The song "1985" was released in 2004. At that time, the song was reminiscing about a time that was 19 years ago. Now, in 2024, the year 2004 is 20 years ago. Therefore, the release year of the song "1985" is closer to the year 1985, than the current year is to the year the song "1985" was released (2004).

  • Biden administration sets 50 miles per gallon fuel economy standard for 2031
  • As far as I am aware, current fuel economy standards are primarily determined by the size of the wheel base. Some years ago, the EPA went from a reasonably managed chart to a specific formula that gets a little extreme on the ends.

    So you end up with craziness like a 95 ranger required to have 60mpg to meet the standard, and a 2024 f35 super mega ultra cab long bed to have like 3mpg to meet standards. (Numbers are made up, but that is the main idea as I understand it)

  • Anyone interested in a book club?
  • I'm game.
    I'm currently reading "Don't Make Me Think: Revised Edition" by Steve Krug. The book is primarily about website design, but anyone with half a brain could translate the design principles and main ideas into a game development context. I just finished Chapter 10(?) all about designing usability tests and how to get a feel for where the main issues are with your design.
    After that, I've got "Design is Storytelling" by Ellen Lupton and "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams queued up.

  • I once met a guy in a guitar shop telling me about the "litter boxes" in the class room of a local high school. I was working as a substitute teacher at the time while I finished my master's thesis. I told him that I work at that school regularly and could confirm that it was a facebook shitpost and not even remotely grounded in reality.

    He walked out of that store still 100% convinced that our local high school just had students casually pooping in the corner during class.

    I mean sure, we still had students pooping in the corner during class, but it had nothing to do with litter boxes. It was very much motivated by how much they hated that particular science teacher, and there was absolutely nothing casual about it.

  • Suggestion please: overdive pedal
  • It sounds like the Rat might be more of what you are looking for. Blues can and does distort, but not THAT much. Try out a Rat, dial it back a little, then see what you think. Worst case scenario, you try stacking the TS and the Rat? Although, that may get untenable quickly.

    I'll also put the Fulltone OCD overdrive onto your radar. It has a very wide range and my buddy loves it with his deluxe reverb. It isn't as classic or super well-known, but it isn't super obscure either.

  • Suggestion please: overdive pedal
  • Ok, reading the description, it is may be trying to sound like a deluxe reverb or a blues junior.

    If that is true, then a blues driver pairs with that amp style really well in my opinion. More grit than a typical tubescreamer, but not quite a full bore distortion pedal like a DS-1 or a Distortion+ (My personal favorite distortion).

    Check out some samples online and see what you think. If you want something a little more like Black Keys, or Jimi Hendrix, then you may also want to consider fuzz pedals with some, relatively lower-ish, gain settings.

  • [28:18] Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

    I don't know where he got that RATHER than the Jews from the book of Matthew, since I read that as more of an AND, but the rest is from the end of the book of Matthew.

  • What would you call it is someone said to another person, "No you are wrong" and the other person "Ya know what? You are right!" and then proceeded to do exactly the thing they were asked to do originally? I'd call that admitting fault. What would you call an interaction like that?

  • Jesus is their savior, Trump is their candidate. Ex-president's backers say he shares faith, values
  • You really don't think the context of the woman correcting him, Jesus accepting the response of a canaanite woman, admitting fault, thanking her for her faith, and then rewarding her doesn't change the context of "Jesus compared a woman to a dog" just a little bit?

  • [Content Creator] CSGuitars rebranding to "Science of Loud" ?

    Facebook and Youtube pages appear to be completely rebranded.

    I hope that Colin isn't selling off or stepping away from the channel. He has produced great content for years. His pragmatic approach to gear selection and maintenance combined with simple and easy-to-understand explanations made him a valuable asset to the community. I know that I've learned a lot about how my gear works and how to best select and modifier gear to get the effect that I want thanks directly to CSGuitars.

    Roku TV bricked until agreeing to new terms of service

    See title - very frustrating. There is no way to continue to use the TV without agreeing to the terms. I couldn't use different inputs, or even go to settings from the home screen and disconnect from the internet to disable their services. If I don't agree to their terms, then I don't get access to their new products. That sucks, but fine - I don't use their services except for the TV itself, and honestly, I'd rather by a dumb TV with a streaming box anyway, but I can't find those anymore.

    Anyway, the new terms are about waiving your right to a class action lawsuit. It's weird to me because I'd never considered filing a class action lawsuit against Roku until this. They shouldn't be able to hold my physical device hostage until I agree to new terms that I didn't agree at the time of purchase or initial setup.

    I wish Roku TVs weren't cheap walmart brand sh*t. Someone with some actual money might sue them and sort this out...

    EDIT: Shout out to @testfactor@lemmy.world for recommending the brand "Sceptre" when buying my next (dumb) TV.

    EDIT2: Shout out to @0110010001100010@lemmy.world for recommending LG smart TVs as a dumb-TV stand in. They apparently do require an agreement at startup, which is certainly NOT ideal, but the setup can be completed without an internet connection and it remembers input selection on powerup. So, once you have it setup, you're good to rock and roll.

    The Wayne Henderson Music Festival, a popular performance and competition event in southwestern Virginia, has announced that this year's will be the last.

    2024 Wayne Henderson Music Festival to be the last - Bluegrass Today

    The Henderson music festival jump-started many careers and encouraged many players to go beyond their current abilities. This is a major loss for bluegrass & country guitarists, and the greater music community across the Appalachian mountains.

    [Discussion] Picks & other plectrum

    Let's share about our favorite guitar picks.

    Jazz III's are a popular favorite in my area, although I've almost always bought the cheapo Fender mediums and heavys. My dad played these powdergripped Dunlap tortexes for years, but they always felt so weird and out of place to me. I have a professional musician friend who swears by BlueChip flat picks. I'll defer to the community towards fingerpicks, felt picks, and sixpence coins.

    Intro CS: Python, Java, C, Lisp, or Haskell?

    How does your school/university teach it? What have been the pros and cons of that choice? Obviously, teaching students logical and foundational concepts is the most important part, but a student's first programming language does color their internalization of the concepts and how they approach solving different problems. For example, OOP is really hard to grasp coming from a functional background. Learning how to manage memory efficiently and use appropriate data types is really hard coming from an interpreted language like Python or Javascript. What have you and your peers decided works best for you and your students?

    Project Ideas For Selection Statements

    Hey all, I want to revamp some of my assignments this coming semester. One of the first projects I always start with is something to get some hands-on experience with conditional logic. However, these projects are getting pretty stale at this point. So, I'm turning to this community for some fresh ideas.

    Keep in mind, these assignments are for brand-new programmers within the first 2-4 weeks of the course. At this point, they won't have really been taught loops, functions, collections, etc., beyond that they exist. They really just know basic syntax, variable types, and terminal input and output. This is where they will practice working with boolean expressions and selection statements like if-else, if-else if-else, and switch.

    Here's what I've been doing for some reference:

    • Write a program to turn an integer grade into a letter grade.

      • 50 -> F
      • 81 -> B-
      • 99 -> A+
    • Write a program to convert a number from 1 to 7 into the corresponding day of the week.

      • 1 -> Monday
      • 7 -> Sunday
    • Write a program that determines the time necessary for sound to travel a given distance in a given medium.

      • 500ft, water -> 0.1s
      • 1500ft, air -> 1.3s
    • Write a program that determines the total price of a bulk order of widgets, with discounts for orders over a certain amount according to some table.

      • 30 -> $30
      • 500 -> $300
    • Write a program that determines the quadrant of a given point.

      • 15, 7 -> Quadrant I
      • 6, -4 -> Quadrant IV

    Request for Couch Co-Op Games on Switch

    I'm looking for something new to play with my 7yo son. Mario games are a great amount of fun, but I'm feeling pretty burnt out and am looking to expand things a little bit. We are looking for cooperative games like Pikmin 3, Cuphead, and Hyrule Warriors rather than competitive-only games like Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart. We appreciate whatever help you all can offer, so thanks in advance!
