What's growing on, Beehaw?
  • it's been really hot here, but I've gotten into watering all of the outside plants every day (I water my aloe and haworthia once a week) and they seem to be doing pretty well! even the tropical hibiscus, somehow.

I'm especially happy about my lavender and the roses, I've mentioned previously I think that roses are special to me because of my grandmother (my grandfather would grow them in the backyard in these huge rose bushes for her and bring them in) and these are the first ones to ever grow and thrive. they're not purely red roses, but I do really like the pattern on them.

uploading images keeps erroring out and I'm not sure how to put an image in here from imgur, so here's a link to the picture of the lavender and roses instead.

  • I feel you. I dislike most of the pyro characters honestly! and also, oof, Thoma requires ascension materials from a special huge questline island in Inazuma. he's kind of a pain to level. the pyro four star I like the most is a tie between Gaming and Yanfei. Yoimiya is my favorite 5 star one, and she works well with Thoma, actually.

you can probably guess who some of my favorites are based on profile pic and banner (eventually, anyway, they're both in Inazuma.)

who do you have your eyes on that you want, anyone besides Diluc and Shenhe? I don't know what the banners are currently.

  • yep! here it is on the steam workshop and I hope it helps you out! if you want the video series too, I can shoot that your way, it doesn't really spoil anything and I didn't know 95% of the mechanics even existed.

  • genshin is surprisingly good (I was also wow'd when I started playing), but ultimately I found the story lacking in a lot of key places for me (justice for Inazuma's story especially!) which ultimately led me to quit for now. I played for two years, and have a pretty well established account. however, I have really bad fatigue issues and wasn't able to keep up as well with the adventuring requirements, such as having to unlock chests for free primogems.

I think playing it until you're tired of the grating parts is a totally valid way to experience it. especially because it's free!

like the other comment, I tried Honkai: Star Rail and honestly I love it so much more. it is turn-based combat, but I feel like the writing is better, and they treat their characters better storywise (in contrast to genshin, which imho the hangouts for four stars are not comparable to the story quests some four stars get.) it's my gacha game of choice, and while I've had my nitpicks, I have those with every game I play pretty much. I also agree it's more f2p friendly.

these are all just my opinion tho! I hope you enjoy your time with the game and that you get the characters you want. may your pulls be blessed!

  • I'm absolutely going to do my best to understand and not copy/paste without doing that. I don't like doing things to my computer that I don't know what is happening, so that makes sense to me! I already ran into that issue plenty of times with my servers, so I'm trying to go all in now.

    thank you!

I too have brain fog and memory issues in general. I'm glad to hear that systems seem simple to understand but have the high ceiling, I love that kind of thing. I just need to push on I think and try LE again, when I get my desktop back.

what is your class of choice in LE?

  • story is usually an important part for me! it's one part of PoE that never impressed me. I might still check out Diablo 4, and I'm glad you laid out a lot of things for me. most of the stuff I could find online was still harping on previous issues that I now know some have been addressed.

funnily enough, I used to love running "lab" (I believe it's short for "labyrinth" but my memory is shot and it's been a long time) in Path of Exile, which was running through traps to rush to a boss. they nerfed that route shortly before I quit, too. but you got a lot of rewards at the end that had the potential to be good, and a blessing on existing equipment that you picked. a shame that boss farming in Diablo 4 isn't as fun, but it's something I'll keep in mind when a sale rolls around.

sorting was probably one of the things I disliked the most in PoE, I could never grasp what was worth using or selling that well. goes hand-in-hand with my inability to roll with theorycrafting builds, so to hear Diablo 4 eases that some is nice.

  • hey, sorry this is coming late! thank you for this. I was already looking at their documentation (I have a few times, as well as read their discourse forum) and joined their discord in preparation.

I think this is a super good tip because I have been trying to parse what all I'd need to get familiar with before I touch anything install wise. I knew about the pinning a deployment thing, but I didn't fully understand how, so thank you for laying it out for me!

  • ayyy new thread new game!

well kind of. I'm actually playing Caves of Qud a bit, now that I understand it more (I did end up installing the tutorial mod, thank you for that! and I did watch a small non-spoilery tutorial series as well) and I'm having a really good time. I started out with a character the tutorial recommended and have been fighting fish to level up. planning on taking on the first big quest tho!

sadly I'm stuck on an old gaming laptop that doesn't really like to play games, so I can't jump into all the games I want to. even my gacha game I play is pushing it, although I still login every day and do my required stuff. the laptop just gets extraordinarily hot. it handles Caves of Qud, because ascii, but I was wanting to jump in to Elden Ring at some point (I don't have the DLC, does it make new runs more exciting at the beginning or is it a later thing?) and realized it's not an option I think due to my laptop's specs and general grumpiness.

so I've been wrestling with Borderlands 3 to get it to work, and my partner and I have been playing that for a bit. I love the BL series, although 2 was imho the best for writing. the humor still annoys me sometimes but I started playing the series with the first one when it came out, as a kid, so it has a special place in my heart. my partner hasn't really ever played first person shooter games, so Destiny 2 (when we played) and Borderlands was their introduction.

  • unfortunately I am in it for the grinding, progression and crafting a build (usually something off the wall when I get confident.)

that said, I do love Hades! I've been wanting to get the second one despite it being in early access so hopefully that'll be in my library soon.

  • I don't think I was very good at the start at making my own builds in PoE, I think the tectonic slam build magically functioned somehow despite that, hahaha. I do miss the game, I played for a really long time. but it's not for me anymore.

I'm glad to hear that Last Epoch is still going strong with new stuff. I backed in on Kickstarter long ago because I wanted more PoE-like games, so I'm glad it's succeeding. I'm hoping that giving it another go will make it stick, because it being the "in-between" sounds like it'll be just right.

  • best resources and tips for a newbie to linux?

I didn't realize this community existed and posted my other thread about linux distros in another community, so I'll try rectifying that here.

I'm trying to learn as much about linux as a desktop system as I can before I dive in to installing a distro on my computer. I do have a tiny bit of familiarity with the terminal from having servers running Debian, but those I get a lot of help with. the distro I've chosen is Bazzite, which is based(?) on Fedora if I recall right. I liked the stuff it comes with (I love video games) built in and I like the idea of the atomic desktop setup.

so, what are your tips and tricks for a new linux user? what about outside resources? I've been doing as much digging for articles and videos as I can, but I thought asking the community might be a good idea too. I'm trying to compile these resources for myself and my partner, so that we have stuff to learn from and reference.

as a final question, what got you into using linux over windows or mac?

    thanks in advance!

to clarify, I mean games like Diablo 4, Path of Exile, and Grim Dawn!

I really love the genre (right next to roguelikes and looter shooters for me, I guess I just like shiny loot a lot hahaha) but I've been feeling kind of lost in it since I quit playing Path of Exile (with over a thousand hours in it) due to not finding the shifting meta builds fun anymore. my favorite build ever in that game (that I had even made myself!) was a tectonic slam juggernaut, and while it was never the best skill, it was an enjoyable one for me. later, things seemed to get more difficult for me to parse in PoE so I never went back. I also never really enjoyed trading, but found playing by myself hard and not as enjoyable since I played with other people at the time.

I've dabbled in Grim Dawn and Last Epoch, but couldn't quite get into them. I keep feeling like I should give them both another go, because I like the genre, but I've bounced off of them multiple times. I also played Diablo 3 briefly but it was at the height of my Path of Exile phase so I didn't really stick with it.

I've been curious about Diablo 4, especially with the summer steam sale potentially coming up soon. most reviews and such I can't find something recent, but I know they had a big update not too long ago. I know a lot of reviews a saw before didn't like it from the start, but I was wondering if anyone who played it could tell me about how it currently is right now.

what arpgs are your favorites, or maybe ones you dislike? what aspects do you like about them? is there something new you'd like to see in the genre, or maybe something that you want to become standardized?

what kind of discussion do you like to see?
  • welcome to beehaw!!

thank you for letting me know. reddit was my first exposure to linux communities and I did get that vibe. but people have been nice here (even when I was talking about my "baby's first self hosting" experiences) and I appreciate that the community is usually good about answering questions. as soon as my desktop is back and functioning, I'm going to be installing a dual boot with linux and windows 10.

what kind of plants are you working with? I have a couple of my own, and I've found the planting and gardening community here very friendly too. I currently have lavender (most recent addition), aloe and haworthia.

  • what kind of discussion do you like to see?
  • for video games, I assume? correct me if I'm wrong! if so, I really enjoy seeing people do off the wall stuff myself, even if I'm not terribly good at it anymore. I've been delving into Caves of Qud recently and seeing videos of people doing different builds is really cool.

  • what kind of discussion do you like to see?
  • thank you so much!

I really appreciate the admins for making such a good space. and for you saying that, I really enjoy being here. I'll be making some new threads soon!

  • what’s your favorite way to beat the heat?
  • mine is actually something I learned about in therapy. wet a washcloth with cold water, then put ice cubes in it. there are various places you can put it to cool down (inner part of your elbow, neck, lower back, etc.) but the first one I was taught was actually the pulse point under your chin, because it also serves a purpose of calming you down. if you're angry or anxious, it might help, on top of cooling you off.

a second thing that I've done is, before bed, putting my comforter and/or my pillowcase in the freezer. only really works depending on size of the freezer and comforter, though.

  • what kind of discussion do you like to see?
  • I had a lot of responses to one of my more recent posts asking about linux distros, which was really nice and interesting to see what people said. I'll keep that in mind for future posts, thank you for the reply!

  • what kind of discussion do you like to see?
  • it's not honestly a beehaw issue, if that helps! I'm just a very anxious and insecure person in general, and I very rarely have engaged in online spaces. beehaw has been the first place I've felt safe enough to start trying to, after a series of bad discord servers.

y'all have a lovely place here, and I'm happy to be along for it!

  • how's your week going, Beehaw
  • but I feel like I should be doing better.

I have these kinds of thoughts often. but it's not a good way to think about things, as in, at least it's always been damaging to me. you shouldn't invalidate your own feelings. if you're not doing "better," that's okay. you don't have to be perfect just because nothing catastrophic happened. or because you feel like if you pushed yourself harder things would be significantly better.

procrastination is never for no reason, and as you said, you feel like a lot is at stake. you have a lot going on! and unfortunately, no one has instructions that will make the nebulous "don't get it wrong" voice go away. it sucks. I know that feeling, and I empathize.

what's helped me is to sit down, preferably with someone I trust and who respects my emotions, and make a little "plan." not a full one where I have x, y, and z plus an emergency one, but just something that will make me feel like the world isn't going to crash down around me at any moment. for example, I had to sort out with my partner what we would do if amazon rejected a return I made because money is tight. even just knowing the future isn't a mysterious void had helped me.

additionally, my only safe space is also my room where I live. I don't know what your living space looks like, but things that have helped me is buying something small to decorate it and make it feel more like my own, possibly getting a small living plant (I have aloe and haworthia, they're very easy to take care of and it sparks a little joy when I see them growing), or even just tidying up a bit, or moving things around so that they're not in the exact same place. when I feel claustrophobic and confined to my room, I try to go on walks (weather permitting!) to remind myself there is space that is safe outside of the house. listening to music or podcasts helps me too, if that's something you also like. I try for at least twice a week and find myself walking more than expected because it's nice to have that break.

I wish you good luck on the cake! and apologies if none of this helps. I just feel like our situations have some things in common and wanted to reach out with what solutions I have for myself.

I hope things get easier for you soon!

  • what kind of discussion do you like to see?

hey beeple! I didn't quite know what to title this, I apologize.

feeling a bit insecure about what would be interesting to post about here on beehaw. so, I thought I'd ask, what kind of posts interest you in the communities you're involved in?

I personally like to learn a lot of things (provided I'm interested in the topic! school was not great for that) and like to learn from other people. for example, I'm recently dipping my toes into linux, and I've started doing things with self hosting (also linux...) as well as trying out new video games and such. I don't have many people to talk about these things with, so I'd like to turn to beehaw for this, but wanted to see if people are generally discouraged by seeing if 1) the same person is posting a lot of topics and 2) that person is a newbie to what they're posting about most of the time.

I know I can't "win it all" per se and have everyone enjoy that kind of thing. just wanted to post a general feeling out thread of how people feel I guess? I came from reddit (unfortunately) and am still trying to grasp what a community like this is open to. since my experience on reddit was not great.

I do want to post some other things and get feedback and possibly stir up discussion if that ends up happening! I'm trying to participate hahaha.

as an additional question, somewhat related, but is there a new hobby you've recently gotten into?

    what's your current linux distro?

wanting to hop into the world of linux on a dual boot method (one of my favorite games unfortunately cannot be run on linux at all, and it's a gacha. I don't want to gamble with my account being banned, so I'm keeping windows for it specifically.) this'll be my second go at it, I used Pop!_OS briefly but had some issues with wifi and didn't love the GNOME layout. I have a new distro picked out, but I just was curious what other people are using in this community. was also wondering what made you fall on your current one.

and maybe as some bonus questions, what are some distros you've tried but didn't like? what about a distro you want to try eventually? I've seen distrohopping is a thing, hahaha.

    favorite gaming medium?

    hello hello!

beeple, I'm wondering what you like to play video games on the most. from cellphones to a custom watercooled pc, what's your favorite?

I grew up a nintendo fan (my first console was a super nintendo) that ultimately shifted towards pc gaming after the wii (and some associated issues surrounding me getting it) because I really love rpgs and the wii didn't have a huge selection that I could find as a kid.

that said, I had a gamecube and playstation 2, and of the two I was partial to the gamecube more. I'd say the gamecube is probably my favorite console, but with the caveat that I started with the super nintendo very young, so I didn't get to play any of the classic Final Fantasy games on it or anything. I got to play those later, and I enjoy them now!

but ultimately I game on pc most of the time (I just dusted off my switch and found Mario Odyssey, so I've been playing that a little while my computer issues get sorted out) and don't feel a pull towards sony consoles any more because they started putting games on steam as well. including Persona, my beloved game series.

    what about all of you?

Ava Max - So Am I

I love Ava Max so much! I saw someone else had posted Choose Your Fighter so I chose a different song that other people might not have heard. it's one of her older ones, but I use it for a character I write (like many of her songs, tbh, she's just really good for my inspiration) so I hear it a lot and wanted to share.

    [recipe] favorite breakfast recipes?

was just wondering if anyone had any great homemade breakfast recipes to share! I'm notoriously picky but wanted to start off by sharing my favorite baked oatmeal. a family member got it's recipe from a bed and breakfast, and I'm obsessed with it.

    bed and breakfast oatmeal

    • 3 cups oatmeal
    • 1 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup milk
    • 1 cup oil
    • 2 eggs
    • 2t baking powder
    • dash of salt
    • mix together and pour into casserole dish
    • bake at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes

some optional things I've taken to adding are walnuts, vanilla extract, almond extract, and/or cinnamon. if you add the extracts, I would recommend adding a bit more oatmeal to compensate. and if the middle of it doesn't seem quite baked (I've had this issue before when I'm too eager to eat it!) then I would let it sit outside the oven for like 5 minutes or so.

I've also shared these breakfast cookies before as well, but I thought I'd share them again.

anyone else got recipes to share?

    What's your recent pet news?

Forgive me if this kind of post isn't allowed.

I wanted to ask people what was new going on with their pets, if they had maybe learned something about them, or maybe just gotten one. Just two examples.

For my part, I have two adopted boys (Champion and Bowser) and had to, a couple years ago, move back in with my mom and now we share a house with her and her two dogs. Champion has always had a lot of behavioral challenges, which led to me doing extra work at my previous job to learn how to train him better (I worked at a doggy daycare and we had to also learn how to train dogs.)

But somewhere along the way between moving to a new place and having to work with him to teach him it was okay for the other dogs to play together (among various other things I've had to help him learn), Champ lost interest in most things other than a bit of play outside (he's still a bit rough around the edges there too) and sleeping on my bed. He's very difficult to walk because of his anxiety, too.

    However!

Recently he started showing interest in a rope toy and when I picked it up and waved it, he grabbed onto the other end and started to pull. We had a great, really long session of tug-o-war and he was really worn out by the end. I've managed to replicate it several times now and it's given me a lot of hope for not just play time, but that he might be able to do things like walks in the future again.

What's going on in everyone else's pet parent lives?

    20
Bowser, aka BB, with his puppy dog eyes

he's no longer a puppy (but he is the youngest of my dogs at four years old) and named after the Mario character. I wanted something nerdy but that people wouldn't immediately find hard to pronounce or remember.

one of the calmest dogs I've ever met, even though he's part dutch shepherd.

(also don't mind the ttrpg books on the side.)

    Starting my selfhosted journey

    hello!

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this (sorry if it isn't) but I recently got really interested in selfhosting because I got mad about Spotify for various reasons. I ended up asking for a family member to help make a media server for me, because I was overwhelmed with all the information.

I ended up with Jellyfin, which I really like, but it only has music on it right now. the first song was one that is floating around but was never released, and Spotify keeps deleting it when people put it up. understandable, I suppose, but frustrating.

I have a few other things I'm trying out, I had asked for KitchenOwl and Shiori, as well as PhotoPrism. it's hosted on what I'm guessing is some kind of HP thin client, I wasn't able to get specifics out of the family member. they said that Tailscale was overkill for what I'm doing, but I'm sharing the servers with a partner who's long distance, and I feel better about it than trying to manage exposing stuff to the internet.

I'm not crazy about KitchenOwl so far, and I was considering trying Mealie instead, does anyone have experience with that one?

I started playing with my Raspberry Pi 3, which I had sitting around doing nothing, and I've installed DietPi on that one and a new Raspberry Pi 4. before my family member got involved, I got pi-hole on the RPi 3, but I broke it once, and had to use the bash command before I started understanding what I was doing.

been going between apps, not able to find an RSS feed one I like, but I've managed to figure out Portainer a little, so I'm trying them out one by one.

most recent addition is Homarr, which I'm really enjoying so far! (despite having trouble installing it in Portainer) I like that it has little status icons for if an app is up or struggling. anyone else use a homepage?

I've been eyeing newer hardware for the main server but I don't think it's needed yet, so far I don't seem to need transcoding? but we'll see.

if anyone selfhosts, what's your favorite app you have?
