Finished watching it the other day and if you're into scifi, or maybe more science-fantasy, it's well worth watching! Refreshing to see some new scifi, particularly with a focus on extraterrestrial ecosystems.
Saw by searching that there's nothing about another season for now, which is a shame, but I think season 1 stands up well even as it is.

This is buried toward the bottom of the release notes so I'm bringing it up here:
Added instance-level default sort type
Any admins out there considering changing their instance sort settings or asking people on their instance if they'd like this changed, given that we can individually set sorting anyway? Taking into account the inclination of people to never adjust default settings (I remain deeply curious about this tendency, as an aside), I think it might be worth at least bringing up to one's instance community.
If they decide they want it to remain the same, all good, and even better, it raises some people's awareness that they can change it themselves.
With that convoluted title I'm making myself think about what we'd call the additional days on other planets or other different temporal circumstances.
Instead of ending them with -day you could end them with the planetary body name or circumstance name. Today might be Lajove on Jupiter!
I think while some of this may be people being people (i.e. tendency to only discuss issues/problems vs accomplishments/solutions), I think there's also a technical element to it as well in Lemmy's case.
Up to the latest release of Lemmy (as of writing this is v0.19.4), admins couldn't adjust the default sort setting, which was Active. Read the docs on the sort setting and Active does what it says, surfaces those posts with recent commenting activity (taking into account score as well).
So you get this unfortunate mix of: people gravitate to discussing negative stuff, people tend not to change default settings (since despite defaults being Active, we can change these if so inclined), and the default sort settings surface whatever is being most discussed/commented on, resulting in this sort of negativity feedback loop you've observed.
I noticed and posted about this a few months ago, have tried to upvote and comment on less negatively-focused posts occasionally, but I think this may be an interesting example of a small scale systemic issue as it takes more of us doing similar to address what's being encountered. However, as more instances update to v0.19.4, I'll be interested in seeing if admins decide to switch away from the Active sort setting to try to address this in their own way.
I don't know what sort setting may be better for instances to run with instead, but I'm glad they now have the option. In the meantime I think it's worth reminding people that they currently have the option to change their default sort settings to something different to try to see different kinds of posts. Personally I switch between New and Scaled to see a variety of posts beyond many of the regular doom and gloom posts.
Appreciate the adjustments and responsiveness! Gave it another try after this and the different formatting hit the spot! Still need to use more to see more finely tuned results, but dig the idea.
Also as others have already said plenty, would be cool to see this cleaned up for an open source release. If you'd like to see how some others are handling a sorta similar idea but with RSS feeds, you might look to Nunti for ideas on how to approach it.
Little feedback on the UI from taking a peek at this.
When I went into settings and adjusted post display style from card to anything else, it wasn't clear to me that this wouldn't apply to the new For You feed, which left me confused and less inclined to use it. I still gave it a try to make sure I wasn't missing anything and to see how much the feed seemed to change with some light interaction, but I think you'd need to use it more than I did to see an effect.
Problem being: display settings not applying to the For You feed means I'm not going to use it much with the default card view.
Second part is that there was some comment display lag as I looked through posts, so if I looked at a post about cats with cat-related comments, those comments would linger and appear for a moment under a different post about possums. It's just long enough to be noticeable, so thought it worth mentioning.
If at some point Lemmy.zip gets a wiki (if it doesn't already have one), I hope one of the urls for it ends up as xyz.lemmy.zip
Huh. I had to take a quick glance at the timestamp of this article to make sure it wasn't old, as this was the same issue that inspired a short-lived fork a few years ago.
I get where this article's coming from, as I got where the people trying to fork it under a different name were too, however for better or worse I think what matters even more to people is that the software works well and has a good UX. If I remember right, I think Glimpse intended to focus on improving the UX but it didn't last long enough to do much in that regard.
Better than my memory though, here's an article that gives some insight into what went into the cessation of its development.
It’s really hard to gauge humanity when it really only takes a few terrible people to ruin things for everyone else.
Using that perspective to recognize the many other alright people I think might be a way for people to encourage one another and feel less wary of calling out bad actors. It's a funny thing, but the same live and let live tendencies we appreciate from others at times seems to diminish the slight resolve necessary to push back against those negatively affecting many others.
Similarly, I think it's beneficial to recognize the good as much as the bad, as otherwise we take the former for granted and can grow too jaded and overly cynical.
It's a fun way of saying be yourself more or less, and also that we're in major industries and always have been and will be; plus that we've always been around regardless of what others may insist
Some side-work I do has me dealing with people a bunch, and for as much as we all complain about each other, at least in brief moments my experiences with others have been okay, pleasant even.
Of course, despite that, I can't shake the idiosyncratic impulse to avoid people much of the time, but regardless. As a bonus: most of those I'm encountering are total strangers to boot, so it's not even a matter of familiarity.
Not much more of a point to this post than that, really. Thought we could use a little more upbeat stuff around here.

Hah, yeah, I tried to mention a variety so people wouldn't think any show was too old or too niche. I watch whatever manages to snag my interest in some way.
Some shows I check out simply from the sudden uptick in memes, which is how I found my way to Columbo.
I've been bouncing between shows lately, binged through a few or what was available anyway.
Recently it's been more anime shows, but I binged through some live action stuff awhile back like Russian Doll, was also watching some of the original Quantum Leap for a minute, some Columbo, and dove into a select few old Outer Limits episodes.

Comm-Ents running aerials in their uppermost branches of their head but nobody can tell 'cause they've made'em blend in. Paranoia's even harder to pin down when the "trees" can literally be listenin'.
It really is pretty good after all! I didn't really know what to expect going in, but this is a show I kinda wish was around when I was younger.
It's pretty good at speaking to introverted kids trying to find their place in the world in those awkward years, I think, without some cheesy, simple, "Surprise, you're the chosen one!" sort of approach. This is all the more impressive given that they do have that protagonist is ridiculously powerful but doesn't know how to channel it character trait going on here.
I can see now why it became so popular, even aside from it following the success of One-Punch Man.
Hey, so I know some of you may be new or may have never wrapped your head around what any of this federation stuff means regarding Lemmy, so I aim to keep this simple while linking to more detailed posts for those interested in more technical background at the bottom.
The short of it is, your posts and comments to communities hosted here on Lemmy World or elsewhere, or comments to posts from others on Lemmy World from elsewhere, may be taking awhile to be visible to others outside of Lemmy World. In other words, if you've posted to a community on say, Lemmy.nz or Aussie.zone (for the most dramatic examples), you may not have seen any responses until much later because it took that long for them to process & receive them.
This is a known technical issue with the present Lemmy version that is currently being discussed and worked on. As I understand it, this is in large part due to the concentration of activity on Lemmy World, while some other delays are related to geographic factors, both smashing together for one gnarly snag with the Lemmy software.
So what does this mean for you? Well, if you would like more timely communications with a variety of other Lemmy sites' communities, you may consider moving from Lemmy World to another Lemmy site.
Lemmy World is up to date with Lemmy, meaning you can export your settings (including user/community/instance blocks and community subs) and import on other up to date Lemmy sites. This tends to be easiest via the web interface so far as I'm aware.
Alternatively you may remain with an awareness of why you may not have seen many replies/comments to some of your comments/posts on other sites' communities, or suddenly see notifications for replies/comments to "old" comments/posts. People may only now be seeing them some time later.

...It's not too bad after all. Nothing groundbreaking, but okay for what it is.
I think if you liked it and wanted a little more mature approach you have some good options to go to from here, whether that's Samurai Flamenco or Tiger & Bunny. Not that into superheroes, so there's undoubtedly more, but those are a couple others I'd checked out before getting around to MHA.
I dunno how many here have given it a try yet, or simply don't ever intend to but are nevertheless a little curious, so I'm putting down some notes here.
Very basics:
- It's very much a Twitter clone on the surface.
- It may depend on your setup, but in my experience I did not have to provide a phone number to sign up.
**Onboarding details:**
- Onboarding is pretty traditional social media, pick some interests, it pulls some accounts it associates with those and has them set to be followed unless you opt not to.
- It diverges slightly in that it then tells you your default feed will be Following with settings to disable showing replies/reposts/quote posts if you like (defaults are to display all of these).
- Where it gets much different is that it then offers you a selection of custom feeds to make your Main Feeds. For a very rough analogy, these can be a little like communities here or subreddits on Reddit, with more involved under the surface producing them.
- This analogy is made more apparent with "Topical Feeds" that try to relate to your previously selected interests.
- Lastly some basic adult/graphic content settings that let you adjust whether to show them outright, warn about them, or hide them completely (i.e. not display in your feeds at all). Defaults, aside from non-sexual nudity, are set to not display any of this and hide it all.
**Actual use:**
- Besides more granular graphic content filtering and emphasis on custom feeds, it's pretty much like Twitter or Mastodon/Misskey/etc.
- You can kinda "lock" your account to make it less visible to those outside of Bluesky, but that's the closest to limited visibility you'll find at the moment so far as I could tell.
- Unlike say, Twitter and Mastodon et al: you can't block/mute people from their posts, you have to go to their profile to do so. 10.1. Unlike Mastodon/Misskey/etc.: You can't limit the reach of your posts, so they're all maximally public, no option to post only to followers, no option to have replies be unlisted so they don't kinda spam up follower feeds, etc. 10.2. You currently can't upload gifs/short videos, though you can link them. 10.3. No audio posts either from what I gather (an option on Mastodon and I'd imagine Misskey and the like as well).
- Despite missing those details, it does have similar levels of filtering tools to stuff like Mastodon, and more streamlined exchange of blocklists.
- Also while you can't limit the reach of your posts, you can limit who can respond to them.

Some miscellaneous quirks Something not mentioned as much is that the custom feeds are, at least at the moment, not really user friendly to try to make yourself. These very much have a vibe of something more tech-oriented people may make for others to use, even with the Skyfeed app to ease their creation. If anything the fact something like Skyfeed exists is some evidence of this.
The trick is, the custom feeds are genuinely more flexible than lists of accounts or followed hashtags/terms on Misskey or Mastodon, but at the moment Bluesky's custom feeds seem kind of underutilized. Many of the custom feeds could simply be lists as found elsewhere.
Not sure how much of that is because the only existing platform using the AuthTransfer Protocol is Bluesky, technical challenge, or something else, but that's the state of many of them for now.
Oh, and presently there's no DMs, just as a stray detail to mention. Skimming convos I got the sense it may be to avoid giving people the sense of any private communications on there.
Also despite all these feeds and a more centralized model (dependent presently only on Bluesky's relay), there's still a sentiment from some there of the place being empty and lacking engagement. In the time I was poking about it, one of the "viral" posts in my discover feed was someone there, amusingly much like here and elsewhere on the fediverse, reminding people they have to engage/talk to others to get any engagement.
Some things really don't change where you go online.

My overall takeaway thus far is that it's pretty much par for the course with microblogging platforms, and not necessarily the best first showing of what the AuthTransfer protocol might really enable. Especially not with its lacking reach/privacy controls, not that any federated social media makes sense to promote as highly private, but still, some controls are better than none.

Been going back and forth on this, as personally I don't have much problem with politics posts and discussions. I know how they can get, and some of why people dislike them, but nevertheless...To not discuss politics enables the worst among us to take the reigns and drag us all over the cliff.
Given that, I'd like to pick apart what may be meant when people say politics. It's a can of worms, so to try to focus things a little, let's say, is it when they're distinctly partisan that disliking them may be meant?
Something you find across the board is the sentiment that a lot of political journalism has very blatant partisan-leanings, and for some organizations there's zero doubt of that.
I should also take a moment to clarify here, when I say partisan, I mean any strongly held political views, not merely left or right, but also including moderate/centrist.
Or is it slightly less the kind that matters, and more the volume of it, pervading every discussion? Especially when one may already be aware and trying to address it in their own ways, and is visiting an online community to get a little respite.
What's your take on this?
