how's your holidays going, Beehaw
  • My 2 cats have finally started playing! One is like 6, the other a kitten, and they're both good and friendly cats and were just taking time to warm up to each other. I heard growling and expected a fight, but saw them on the floor playfully tussling! they'd get up, chase each other, tussle a bit more... I had a royal bastard of a cat for the longest time, and am happy to finally have cats capable of being friends! Fingers crossed that they cuddle properly in the future.

  • Is the linked opencollective system the best / only way to donate? When I first joined and was unsure and hopping around on instances I starting doing patreon mastodon.world; does any of that flow towards beehaw?

  • Omfgf utf8mb4. That one in particular snagged me.

Want to use international languages? Sure, use utf8, it's easy and works everywhere and includes basically every character you could ever want, right? Well, except some popular databases like MySQL where utf8 doesn't actually have the full character set, and is some subset instead. Now in your app some languages will cause weird errors because the characters aren't supported and you won't know why until you dig in and find the issue and that this was considered and a character set that ACTUALLY includes the full set was created and it's called utf8mb4. And you can use it and your app works again but you scratch your head and wonder why a separate set was created when everyone knows the usual utf8 and no one would know to look further, and dig further because you're already this deep and it turns out the answer is sort of that it was convenient at the time. And if a database this popular can have such a strange seemingly broken behavior for no reason then what's going on and does anything really even work. But... then your own spaghetti code doesn't seem so bad.

  • Nice! I'm not too far off that, but I have a touch of experience with DnD and played the first Divinity game for a few hours (before losing interest). REALLY enjoying BG3 so far. It's miles beyond that first game, which was a bit jenky and not as well written.

Save scumming required? no not at all. It's a DnD style game, so the way the quests play out will change but barring a full party wipe you shouldn't need to reload much. But do I save scum to get better roles so I can loot the chest? absolutely.

  • Very good point about it not being about you. I didn't really understand that until I was on the other side and doing some hiring. Sometimes we'd have no qualified applicants for months (like, we had a junior dev position and got people applying that knew nothing about code), and other times we'd have 10+ applicants that were perfect and we wanted to take all of them.

I used to think if I didn't get a job it was on me. Turns out it's a numbers game (assuming you're not applying for something like a junior dev position with only cust service experience).

  • I got a kitten. Want to see pictures?

Edit: Here's us having cuddles on her first day home.

  • Aww. Very nice that she's back.

I hear you on coyotes. I'm one house away from their territory and although it's nice to hear then every night, my fuzzball got out once and I was rightly panicked (he turned up after 2 days... nothing near your ordeal).
