Exclusive: Bernie Sanders worries young people are underestimating the threat from Trump
  • He might be popular here on left-wing Internet forums, but his voters don't turn out.

    https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/sanders-banked-on-young-voters-heres-how-the-numbers-have-played-out

Bernie and Warren are great at pushing progressive policies into the public consciousness, don't get me wrong.

  • Apple denies violating US court order in Epic Games lawsuit
  • The Apple filing criticized what it called an attempt by Epic to make Apple's "tools and technologies available to developers for free."

Wouldn't that be fucking great. Man, if only.

  • Do the "Ernest needs to add more maintainers to KBin!" comments remind anyone else of the xz social engineering malarkey?
  • When I started to read breakdowns about the social engineering behind the xz backdoor I was like, "Waaaaitaminute, I've seen that sort of talk before." I found it notable to point out the similarity and maybe poke around at it.

People decided to use the thread (to my excessive chagrin) to talk shit about kbin and rehash the exact same pressures I was attempting to analyze.

It's a shame, because I noticed similar patterns was looking forward to some good discussion about it here. Alas...

  • Ask ChatGPT to pick a number between 1 and 100
  • I mean... they didn't specify it had to be random (or even uniform)? But yeah, it's a good showcase of how GPT acquired the same biases as people, from people..

  • 'Donald Trump did this': New Biden abortion ad features a woman who says she almost died because of the Texas ban
  • I think you got the wrong takeaway from that story... The character of God rebukes the dead man for not accepting the practical help of other people. It's just framed as though God sent the rescuers to convince the "believes in miracles" crowd that no such things exist.

Consider a simple rewording: instead of "I sent you two boats and a helicopter" you read "Two boats and a helicopter came to save you." This solves your only hangup and doesn't even change the story. Your beef is with the aesthetic component, not the meaning of the story.

  • Balatro 1.0.1 Patch Notes
  • Added toggle for 'Reduced Motion', removing the swirly background and gyrating card motion

Judging by other comments online people seem to love the aesthetic, but I IMMEDIATELY turned off the CRT, scanlines, and screen shaking settings. It was just too much for me. I'm so happy they're letting me take out the last thing that is fucking with my vision after a long play session.

Changed the first shop in every run to always include a normal Buffoon pack as one of the pack options

I think this is a good change too. Might still be a little RNG reliant, but this definitely helps when more often than not, I restart the run after taking a look at the first couple of shops.

Upcoming blinds/tags can now be seen in the shop immediately after defeating a boss blind/cashing out

    Also a worthy change.

Changed Fibonacci - costs $8 instead of $7, because Fibonacci

    lol

Changed Seance - Now uncommon and $6, was rare and $7

Awww, I'm disappointed that the Magic TCG reference is now a little less on the nose.

Overall there's a LOT of balance changes in here. I'm a little concerned that LocalThunk might have bitten off more than he could chew. Especially given that the blinds' base values have been reduced to make the game easier. Though, is it to make it "easier" or "less RNG heavy?" I guess we'll find out soon enough.

  • Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Larian's Publishing Director Calls Games Industry Layoffs an 'Avoidable F*ck Up'
  • So they just have to make good enough games to avoid two complete flops in a row. Which is impossible

BG3 made a lot of committed repeat customers for Larian, I don't think it's impossible their next game will sell very well based on name recognition and good will alone. A guarantee? No. But a safe bet.

It’s the equivalent of the rich billionaires saying if you want a house just work hard and buy one. It’s not hard! Why are the poor people complaining?

If this is the source of your rage posting, that's a lot of misguided anger to point it toward Larian. Are we gonna complain about the one-man developer who quit his job to develop Balatro? Yes he was privileged enough to have savings to dig into, but neither him nor Larian are anywhere in the same ballpark as EA, Microsoft, Ubisoft, etc. They're just the wrong people to get mad at.

  • Baldur's Gate 3 Dev Larian's Publishing Director Calls Games Industry Layoffs an 'Avoidable F*ck Up'
  • Your other comments which are the same comment repeated to everyone. I also don't see any logic, just ragebait.

    Blocked by OP, lol

  • What are your complaints about Lemmy?
  • Ever since reading about the challenge of deleting an image from your profile, a GUI for that. It should not only be an API call, not should you have to contact your instance admin to do it. It should be completely self-service from your profile page.

  • Jon Stewart on Israel - Palestine | The Daily Show

  • Texas GOP meets group suggesting death penalty for women who seek abortions
  • Yeah there goes verdantbanana, right on schedule.

  • Texas GOP meets group suggesting death penalty for women who seek abortions
  • These aren't facts. You're laundering a broken dog whistle through a couple Wikipedia links. Crawl back into your cave you troglodyte.

  • Playboy image from 1972 gets ban from IEEE computer journals
  • Which is still weird.

Alexander Sawchuk, then an assistant professor of electrical engineering at the University of Southern California ... along with a graduate student and the SIPI lab manager, was hurriedly searching the lab for a good image to scan for a colleague's conference paper. ... Just then, somebody happened to walk in with a recent issue of Playboy. The engineers tore away the top third of the centerfold so they could wrap it around the drum of their Muirhead wirephoto scanner...

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenna

Everything about the story sounds like it was a rush job, a decision made on a whim, after exhausting their existing catalog of test images. And who bring a Playboy mag to their university's computer lab, and advertises their possession? They don't even say who it was, probably to protect them from any embarrassing professional consequences. To me, that's probably the strongest reason to retire it: it's unprofessional.

Blocked users who move instances don't stay blocked

Posting to raise awareness of this behavior with kbin. Maybe it's something Ernest can address in the ActivityPub rewrite, maybe it's something that doesn't need to be (or can be) addressed at all.

On Mastodon, if you don't like your instance or it's in the process of shutting down, you can migrate your account to another instance. I was aware of this feature, but I hadn't considered how such a move federates to kbin, until now.

I had blocked a user of a niche Mastodon instance, and then they migrated to a larger instance. After the migration, I started seeing their posts again, with my blocklist only containing the old account, not the new one.

Now to my knowledge, this feature of Mastodon is not a standard component of ActivityPub. I think it's a great feature actually, but I'm concerned that enables a sort of harassment whereby an attacker can harass someone, get blocked, migrate to another instance, and continue harassing their target. This feature being non-standard, I don't know how it gets broadcast to other instances, let alone if/how kbin should handle it.

Should kbin automatically update blocklists with the newly migrated account name and instance name? That feels like the ideal solution, but I don't know how feasible it is. Just wanted to open this up for discussion and awareness.

I tell you what, when you try and tell this story you either sum it up in ten minutes with the broadest strokes or you settle in for a rabbit hole made entirely out of onions and ogres. Conspiracy theorists flock together and constantly try and rope each other into the orbit of their personal hobby horse conspiracy, so once you break the surface suddenly you're digging through endless side stories, each with their own cast of characters, trying to figure out if some tertiary claim is true, was maybe true in the past but is no longer true, or was never true, and discover that the only sources on the matter are the same three people quoting each other in an endless circle of false legitimacy.

"In 1 hour" post at the top of microblog/newest: bug or feature?

Does anyone else see this post by t2aki at the top of https://kbin.social/microblog/newest ? I'm not sure if it's a federation bug, like some kind of miscommunication between kbin and their instance on the timestamp of the post, or some kind of scheduled-in-advance post that is set to go live one hour from now. I'm not even sure it will ever stop being "1 hour from now."

So funny thing about #kbin. I post a photo thread. I go to my profile and see the thread. I click on the image preview icon. I immediately get sent to https://kbin.social/u/undefined. Not only is Mr. Undefined a real user, hello @undefined, but somehow my image now directs to his profile.

As I dig into Firefox dev tools to find out why, I see that uBlock Origin has blocked the request for my image. But that's odd, I have no specific blocking rules for kbin, and kbin.social doesn't run ads. What's up?

So it turns out my image got uploaded to the following URL: https://media.kbin.social/media/ad/b2/adb203028331eada7f99f2b4547cbc0a7efc0ba4e203a71d9d193c02d38aa4f1.jpg

.../media/ad/... That's what uBlock was upset about. So by blocking that request, the target of the AJAX fetch is... undefined. Hence my trip to a random user's profile. XD
