Combating Misinformation Runs Deeper Than Swatting Away ‘Fake News’
  • Larger platform changes such as ranking content based on quality, rather than engagement, might hit at the root of the problem

Wait, we shouldn't just let people create intentionally divisive outrage machines?

  • The Most Loved Digital Audio Streaming Platforms.
  • Some people love to dry hump strangers on a crowded bus or train, is that more like it?

I have to admit I don't understand what connection this has with paying for music apps.

  • The Most Loved Digital Audio Streaming Platforms.
  • I'm pretty sure if you're paying for it, that's not love.

  • Gavin Newsom vetoes sweeping AI safety bill, siding with Silicon Valley
  • that will inevitably fail.

While I agree with your disappointment in newsom, caving in to the rich is how you win elections in our "democracy".

The electorate pales in importance and definitely doesn't care about AI safety. This is about appeasing the money.

  • one small correction: *selfish* men create hard times
  • The real cycle is:

Rich people create hard times, hard times create more poor people, rich people create more hard times.

  • Didnt we already know that elon opened starlink to the russians? I thought he announced after that call with putin?

  • Iran’s Khamenei slams ‘criminal’ Israel for killing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah
  • Oh yeah, I see that. No idea what I thought it said.

  • Childless GOP candidate borrows family for weird photo shoot
  • Yep. Pence is the one with lady blinders, like a horse, to protect him from seeing things that might scare and confuse him.

  • Iran’s Khamenei slams ‘criminal’ Israel for killing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah
  • Y'all ... You guys ... you're

Let's ignore the question of what you think moralizing is if you saw it in the eight words you replied to. What I'm curious about is, do you think you're talking to Hezbollah? On Lemmy?

  • Iran’s Khamenei slams ‘criminal’ Israel for killing Hezbollah’s Nasrallah

Netanhayu's not god, he's just a brutal lying tyrant with no respect for human life - so I can see how you'd get confused.

  • Project 2025 Wants to Eliminate the Agency That Warned Us About Hurricane Helene
  • My understanding is that a lot of the big agribusiness is structured as a monopsony - all the people farming a particular crop have only one big Ag company they all have to sell their produce to and that company sets the price low enough that the farmers doing the actual growing for Big Ag are still getting screwed.

  • Project 2025 Wants to Eliminate the Agency That Warned Us About Hurricane Helene
  • Exactly. That's a service that some rich people could be making profit on and here we are just giving it away for the collective good of our society. Won't someone think of (financially screwing over) the farmers?

  • Peep Show also has that joke - "Slaves, Jeremy" VS "Whips, Rimmer".

But there's a good chance that the answer wasn't slaves, but well paid, hard-drinking work-units, organized along the lines of boat crews, all working together during a public festival and overseen by well trained specialists.

  • Is driving a car this awful all the time?
  • Yep! In my experience it's awful and it stays awful for ever.

But just like with going to work, over time you come to accept that existence is suffering.

  • Capitalist development vs Socialist development
  • This is too close to dishonest to be persuasive.

The word "occupied" is doing the heavy lifting, but saying "invaded & occupied" implies that they've done as little invading as occupying, which is not true.

The USSR isn't included, so the implication that socialism means 0 occupations is also untrue.

All states that identify as socialist have done fewer invasions than the US, as a combination of having existed for less time, having had less power during that time and -yes - having a slightly lower inclination to invade.

All powerful states abuse their power to unacceptable (if differing) degrees. That's the nature of hierarchical power. All nation states are vermin.

  • I'm not criticizing the author I'm criticizing the purpose that verbal tool was constructed for. It was designed to close off debate and that's the only way it's ever used.

It's the best example of what it's trying to describe. It's a hypocrite of a phrase, engaging in what it condemns.

  • shouting "ACAB" in a thread about police violence, making jokes about beheading rich people, or throwing "muskrat" comments in discussions about Elon Musk

You were talking about people on lemmy insulting the powerful. Specifically the police, the rich and musk.

  • World's oldest cheese found on ancient Chinese mummies
  • "Chinese" mummies is a bit misleading. The Tarim Basin has a long history of Chinese rule/influence, but not that far back.

These mummies are from a unique population that descended largely from Ancient North Eurasians, a group who contributed smaller percentages of ancestry to Northern Chinese people, Europeans, Siberians and Native Americans.

So these cheese enthusiasts are less Chinese and more like distant foreign relatives to the Chinese who adopted dairy-heavy pastoralism after it expanded through the steppe.

  • Which are lesser-known movies that are well worth seeing?
  • If you like animation you have to see Son of the White Mare. It's a gorgeous and elegant retelling of traditional Hungarian fairy tales with clever nods to a modern psychedelic sensibility.

  • There is a fundamental difference between insulting the powerful and insulting people.

Having high status or power changes your brain, suppressing empathy and making you more capable of hurting others. Power makes people neurologically more evil, so it's correct to apply different standards to the powerful.

Insulting is a way to chip away at someone's social status, so 'punching up' has a (minor) positive leveling effect whereas 'punching down' tends to reinforce inequality and it's enabler: prejudice.

Disrespecting the powerful is important, necessary and beneficial.

New Poll Shows Trump’s Desperate Play for Key Voting Group Is Failing

A survey of 600 likely general election voters in Michigan, released late Thursday by WDIV Local 4/Detroit News, found that zero African American respondents said that they supported Trump, while 82.1 percent said they supported Vice President Kamala Harris.
