Pity, really.
  • Good on you. You can teach your son some valuable perspective, while getting in some quality time as well. Please let us know how it goes, if you don't mind. I feel invested now.

  • Pity, really.
  • Depends on what you're looking for, really. I'm unsure about the rules regarding sharing specific sites, but if you DM me, I can throw a few recommendations your way.

  • Pity, really.
  • You make some good points there. I remember LAN parties in high school where we would spend hours troubleshooting network problems and calling older brothers for advice. I learned a lot from those experiences, because I was forced to. I think a big part of the changes we are seeing in computer literacy is what I would call the Apple philosophy: if a toddler can't use it, we need to simplify. Basically, as you said, things are getting simpler with less granular control. Of course, Apple is far from the only company doing this stuff, but they seem to be industry leaders in the sense of 'dumbing down' tech.

I recently had a friend say that privacy is a luxury these days. My first thought was that there is nothing luxurious about it. It takes hard work, inconvenience and savvy. And I'm not even close to Stallman levels of privacy paranoia. I know just enough to acknowledge that I know nothing. I feel similarly about tech in general. I have been using Linux for ten years, I use VPNs, I have played around with DNS settings, et cetera. But I realize that I have barely scratched the surface of what is possible and available to those willing to spend the time and get it done.

Anyway, I'll shut up now. Thanks for replying thoughtfully, and thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

  • Another update: Seeleeu Leipoldt replied to my Facebook message yesterday. He says all he wants is songwriting credit. So it's going on the album. I'll post a link here when it's ready to publish.

  • I just got a Playdate!

I ordered my Playdate last week, and it arrived today. I am having a blast with it so far. Highly recommend it. The build quality is really solid, and the software is snappy and fast. Seriously, get yourself one of these.

Would you teach your kids how to pirate?
  • I'll only say no to this question because I don't want to have kids. But I taught my mom how to pirate, and I'm proud of that. I believe that piracy is not a morally neutral act. It is morally good. Pro-piracy is an ethically good stance to take in this age.

  • Okay, so I sent an email to Eckard Potgieter, but he has not replied. I also found the Seeleeu Leipoldt Band on Facebook and sent them a message, but I didn't get a reply from them either. So I guess it's not happening any time soon. God, I hate copyright. It's just so frustrating. But either way, the album is going forward, and I already have ten songs recorded for it. I'll definitely post it to this group when I release it.

  • Any Playdate owners in here?
  • Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I'll return to this comment when mine arrives to remind myself of the titles you mention. I am very excited to get mine. I'm not a huge retro gamer, but I do love the creativity of constraint. Like setting a movie all in one room. You have to get pretty inventive to pull off an enjoyable experience with so little to work with.

  • Any Playdate owners in here?

Hi, all. So I just made a semi-impulse purchase of a Playdate console. While I'm waiting for it to arrive, I would like to hear from you guys. If you have it, what has your experience been? Is it as good as some reviews make it seem? How big of an issue is the lack of backlight? Any favourite games?

    Looking for an artist

Hi. I'm looking for someone willing to make an album cover for an album I'm currently recording. I will pay your going rate, of course. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

    Looking for some information

Hi, all. So I am a South African living abroad, and I have a question. See, I'm an amateur musician, and I want to record a cover of the song "Blou Blou Lug" by Seeleeu Leipoldt for my next album. The problem is that I can't seem to find out how to navigate the copyright situation. I don't want to step on anyone's toes here. Is there a database somewhere that I can search to figure out who owns this song?

TL;DR: I need info on the copyright of an old Afrikaans song for the purpose of releasing a cover version.
