how's your week going, Beehaw
  • Went out with family to a Sunday market down in Oregon and absolutely decimated my diet in the process. I also tweaked my knee in the process while being an idiot. Hooray!

In more exciting news, I bought my first gun: a Glock 21. My pickup date is next week. After that I'll be off to lessons because, while I'm familiar with handguns, it's also been a while since using one and I don't feel like somehow blowing a hole in my hand on accident.

  • What details/tools have you found help people transition to similar, open software from closed software, or think could help?
  • Thanks for reminding me that Pinta exists. :D I remember not enjoying it as much as paint dot net, but I'm a dirty Linux user so if I ever need to do some photo work I might give it a shot instead of fumbling around on GIMP forever.

  • What details/tools have you found help people transition to similar, open software from closed software, or think could help?
  • As someone who does not do any sort of professional photo editing, I find GIMP and Photoshop to be equally confusing as hell. The only photo editor I've used with any degree of success is paint dot net, which obviously doesn't have the same firepower as the bigger options.

  • Microsoft won't fix Windows 0x80070643 errors, manual fix required
  • Welp, looks like I'm gonna be busy next week. We have a lot of devices that got stuck on this, and the script they provided a few weeks back didn't work on a good number of them.

  • Yay for a UPS! I'm sure you'll find some funky way of getting automagic reboots going.

  • Miserable, been distracting myself with homelab and Runescape.

In the case of the former, I bought two separate PCIe conversion bridges so I could plug a GPU into a PCIe x8 slot. The first didn't line up with the bracket properly (this was my fault for thinking I could somehow magically fit a card into a slot after raising it a centimeter or so). The second was intended to raise the card to a low-profile height. The card I bought required the entire shroud to be removed to install the low-profile bracket. After some cursing, I got it installed, and it didn't work! Finally at my wit's end, I replaced my server's motherboard with a different one that has actual PCIe x16 slots. Still, nothing! Banging my head against the wall, I finally realized: unRAID is currently on Linux kernel 6.1. The GPU is an Intel ARC A310, which didn't have support in the kernel until 6.2. I upgraded the kernel using an unofficial repo, and the encoder immediately showed up under /dev/dri. FML.

  • Sadly you'd probably just be playing a game of state leapfrog. My usefulness in-state is limited to a passing knowledge of social services that are unique to Washington. Most of my friends are young and either living at-home or in shared apartments/dorms, and I live in a 200sq/ft studio in the middle of ✨ nowhere ✨, so I'm pretty unhelpful housing-wise. Though Washington is probably one of the best places in the world especially if you're trans and I will fight to the death for this claim.

As someone who's basically lived one calamity to the next recently (even after daring think I had found some form of stability on several occasions), I wish you the best. Things have somehow stayed afloat for me, and I'm confident the same will be said for you.

  • I'm sorry you're going through that. I wish I had feelers in Minnesota, but sadly I'm on the other side of the country. I really hope you can find something. Also, does Minnesota have low-income phone programs? I believe there's something of the sort here in Washington, but idk whether it's a commonplace thing elsewhere.

  • Plus it has a decent web framework in Blazor. I'm not a developer by trade, but I've enjoyed it in the context of small, personal projects.

  • I came out to my mom, which went about as well as it could've given she has a terminal case of way too much Fox News. She's now taking it upon herself to more-or-less concern troll about my mental health which is funny. I'm still hoping it'll turn out well with her, but I'm prepared for the worst. 🤷

  • You have 5 minutes to hide a paperclip in your home. A detective has 24 hours to find it, If they don't, you get $100,000. Where are you going to hide the paperclip?
  • Since others have taken the in-their-ass approach already: inside my microphone. The end unscrews, which isn't really obvious unless you fuck with it. I used to hide my prescriptions in there to get them past room checks at my old boarding school.

  • Well, campus was quite a ways from my parents, but my uncle dropped by with a battery bank that let me keep using my phone for a bit. I mostly switched between watching shows over data and walking around campus with friends. It sucked at the time, but in hindsight it was nice actually getting off my ass and hanging out with people outside.

  • We had a similar thing happen at my boarding school a ways back. 3+ days without power and not allowed to leave campus. Not fun!

  • Yep, we've been dealing with the !!FUN!! of the new licensing changes at work. My boss strongly doubts Broadcom will just stop honoring the perpetual licenses, as they've claimed they might. Although I agreed with him, I ended up convincing him to just get the stupid subscription. The joys of enterprise software plans. :D

  • Yay for a UPS! I need to get around to buying one for my NAS, as the power in my area is touch-and-go when the weather gets rough. Also, you're on ESXi for a homelab? Is there some kind of personal use license that you can get for it, or are you shelling out cash for a regular business license?

  • What's a hobby or interest of yours that you really love explaining to others?
  • This post made me realize my interest in homelab stuff isn't particularly interesting lol. As for niche stuff, I like old Minecraft trivia despite not really being in love with the modern game anymore.

  • What's your favorite car, and why is it the Volvo 242? (I'm partial to the earlier ones from the mid-late 70's, but the early 80's turbos are cool as well.)

  • I finished my new^2 NAS last week (for the most part). Everything has been gracefully moved over, and now I just need to tear the entire thing apart again so I can dremel out a PCI slot so it'll fit a graphics card. I'm great at planning ahead. :D

  • I haven't noticed much of an uptick per se, at least in the posts I've seen browsing all. There was a recent uptick in low-effort America bad posting out of certain communities, but I haven't seen much in the way of red fascist bs.

What difficult games/game challenges did you give up on?

Be it a game that's difficult in its entirety, or a particular challenge in a game that you just couldn't complete.

For me, there are three that come to mind:

    • Super Hostile: Waking Up (Minecraft Custom Map, Hard difficulty). That damn water section...
    • Terraria Zenith Mode. Coming from someone to whom Master Mode is fairly easy, this was rough.
    • Calamity Death Mode (Terraria). I beat DoG (this was back when a headshot was an automatic death), but I just could not click with the Yharim fight. I also think burnout was at play here because that was a LONG playthrough.

Mastodon Users: What Instance(s) Do You Like Best?

Basically the title. I've been thinking of checking out Mastodon, and I'd like to get opinions on which instances are great. I'm mostly just looking for something like Beehaw. That is to say, a chill and friendly place that's at least decently active.

Thanks. As a bribe for your participation, please enjoy this close-up photo of a deer that walked past the window at work today. NVM, the picture won't upload. Please imagine a cute deer in your mind instead.

    Hi beeautiful people.

On certain posts, reply chains seem to be hidden by a "x more replies" button. When I try to click to expand these replies, however, I'm met with an eternally-spinning wheel. I've tried this in both Chrome and Firefox, with extensions enabled and disabled, all to the same effect. Any help is appreciated.

Browser: Chrome 118.0.5993.88 (Also reproduced on the latest Firefox)

    Platform: Fedora 38

    Thanks. :)

For the Love of Everything, Please Keep 3-6 Months Worth of Money for an Emergency Fund (If You Can)

I left my job about two months ago, and I applied for unemployment immediately. I got a new job today, but I STILL haven't gotten my unemployment decision. Additionally, my food stamp application was delayed due to personal circumstances. In short, had I not had money saved for an emergency, I would have been mega-screwed.

I know some people are not in a position where they have the luxury of storing away significant amounts of cash but, if you are, I beg of you to do so if you aren't already. I can't imagine what position I'd be in right now if not for my budgeting.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.

PS. I posted this here instead of in c/finance because the sidebar there specifies that it's supposed to be for finance-related news.

Beeple who have tried both a dual-monitor setup and a single ultrawide setup: which did you prefer?

I'm reworking my computer setup, and I'm currently debating with myself over whether I want to pick up a second monitor, or sell my current one and replace it with an ultrawide. I figured I'd seek out anecdotes to see which setup people tend to prefer.

Edit: Thanks y'all for the responses. I see a lot of people doing UWD+1, a few using dual, and very few using none at all. I'm at least going to roll with two monitors, but I'll have to do some measuring to see if I can make an UWD+1 work for my desk.

Request: Icon for PWA on Linux

    Hi be(e)autiful people!

I'm a Linux user (Debian 12 GNOME) and also an enjoyer of PWAs. I noticed that Beehaw has an option to install on PWA and I thought it could be neat to try it out that way. While the install worked fine, I noticed one small issue: the PWA lacks an icon. I don't know what kind of work would need to go into adding an icon to the PWA, but I would sincerely appreciate it if the dev team would consider doing so when they have a spare moment. I can of course add one to the .desktop file on my own, but it would be(e) neat to have one natively included.

    Thanks. :)

Edit: see the comments. Apparently the icon is already in place and I was just having some funkiness on my end.
