My look at the Framework 16
  • I went way overboard speccing mine so thenAussie tax was a big hit. Including the RAM & SSDs I sourced separately, over $5K 😭 I find the FW13 is reasonable comparable to similar 13in laptops, but the FW16 is pricier than comparable 16in laptops. Windows ones that is. As I've specced it its a total bargain compared to a 16in Macbook. That said, I was willing to eat the price difference for the modularity, the potential for future upgrades & to back Framework's mission.

Also yes, I'm also desperately waiting for the release of an oculink module.

  • FW16 Backpack

Just a heads up for anyone looking for a backpack that comfortably fits the FW16, especially with the GPU installed. I received my FW16 last week, have spent the week trying to find a backpack that fits. I had a few that came close, but all were either uncomfortably tight on the GPU or far too tight on the edges (i.e. not likely to offer much drop protection). I eventually landed on the STM Dux 30L. It is designed for up to a 17" laptop, which seems to work well for the FW16's deep GPU. Hopefully if someone else is in the same boat I've just saved them some research. It is an expensive backpack however. That part still makes me cry.

Framework Laptop 13 Ryzen 7040 BIOS 3.05 Release and Driver Bundle BETA

After the 3.03b Beta it looks like the release version is out. Good news for people with USB-PD charging issues. My own anecdotal experience: I have a few USB-PD chargers that refused to handshake with with my FW13s including one big Satechi unit. Since the update all are working happily.

Found the ultimate case for framework expansion cards.
  • I should have been more specific. Yes it's the Secure Pocket Rocket

  • Found the ultimate case for framework expansion cards.

Tried a few options, really wanted a soft case. Can't speak highly enough for the think tank case, it fits just right and can accommodate the ethernet module too.

Framework Laptop 16 Deep Dive - Connectors
  • Loving the continuous transparency from Framework. Bought one for myself, when my father needed a new laptop got him onto the framework bandwagon. Now my wife has informed me to start budgeting - she wants one next year. Their behaviour to date is why I'm willing to get behind them & their products.

  • Reflecting on my Year with the Framework Laptop 13
  • Dual booting Mint & Windows. Working a treat

  • Has anyone set up RAID 1 on a Framework laptop? (Might not be possible until Framework 16?)
  • How performant does it need to be? What's the nature of the read/write behaviour? If it fits the profile of "fast USB drive" then you could potentially get away with 2 of these (https://frame.work/au/en/products/storage-expansion-card?v=FRACCFBZ02) configured in software raid and boot your OS off the internal nvme. That said, I feel you'd get more mileage with a second hand (and cheap!) micro PC for your paperless instance and save the framework as a laptop

  • Never had any issues with the unit. As mentioned I have an old 4x4 with an aftermarket head unit (Sony XAV-AX5000) and have never experienced any audio issues. This car is our family "adventure vehicle" so we use it for long road trips and camping adventures - in short when it gets driven it's often for a longer multi-hour journey, with music playing the whole way

  • No stress, glad I pointed you down a hopefully workable path. Good luck mate 😉 And yes the US tax. Purchased mine from Amazon US, I'm down in Australia. Even with the higher cost it has been an absolute joy even with my single-phone use case.

  • I haven't tried the multiple phone song and dance on the unit. It lives in my old 4x4 which my wife refuses to drive.

We do have a similar issue with our other car however '05 Subaru Forester (non Android Auto). It randomly connects phones - as in I can be sitting in the car, start up to go somewhere and the car connects to my wife's phone while she and it are in the house. The only reliable option I've found (only practical if we're both in the car) is to quickly tap Bluetooth off on one phone before starting the car. If your Honda is starting with a Bluetooth connection, then I'm guessing the same solution should work.

  • Screenshots of the config screen attached. I'm not connected to the unit right now, hence the error message.

A number of months back we had a "dads and kids" 4x4 day. The week before the day we (the dads) went scouting for some easier tracks to take the kids on. Here are some photos from our scouting.

What specs for a self-hosted Lemmy instance?

Hi all, a shout-out for assistance. I’m considering hosting a Lemmy instance (assuming I can pass the wife test on costs) and I’m looking for some guidance on specs.

Can anyone who’s currently hosting an instance (or who knows the inner workings of one) please reply with:

    • specs on the hardware / VPS that’s hosting your instance
    • how many users / posts that’s supporting
    • what the system load looks like with the above
    • if locally hosting, the type of bandwidth requirements you’re seeing

I previously posted this in the wrong community, and one of the responses asked how many users I'm expecting. To preemptively answer - I don't know. I'm just trying to get an idea of relative sizing.

    Thank you!!
