The Ministry for the Future makes open source social media look easy.
  • To be fair, he focuses on some struggles more than others. In Ministry it's more about a few activists and one relevant bureaucrat organizing from top down and bottom up, and not really about labourers other than vignettes for context. Character development over plot for KSR, usually.

  • The Ministry for the Future makes open source social media look easy.
  • I thought that it wasn't handwaved away so much as discussed as being developed by a particularly skilled group as part of promoting a populist freedom oriented crypto, and funded internationally over years by the Ministry but as a minor project that blew up due to network effects kicking.

In that respect I thought it was realistic and while background to the main plot and characters, included as one of the better solutions that together all add up. I didn't mind it as reference rather than story, but thought "that would be an interesting story in its own right" and since KSR is not a software dweeb and typically doesn't go there, I would rather read a version by Stross or N. Stephenson.

  • Evidence mounts that Marvel Rivals stealthily places losing players in bot matches, and I know because I'm the loser
  • I mained Q3Arena and UT for a few years, then lost the thread as other amazing fps solo games came along.

Now I’ve been mainly playing Destiny2 for a few years, and as the game dies I have discovered that the PvP gameplay has that old magic of a fast fluid arena shooter still going on under all the class complexity and gacha-grind system.

Cool thing is, while D2 is expensive and microtransaction-filled, you can instead just play pvp utterly freely and the grind for gear is unnecessary if you like casual arena shooters. Also D2 has really great gunfeel and graphics, it’s Bungie, that’s about the only thing they do perfectly.

  • IR heat lamps sold as medical devices have timers, but pet stores sell them for reptiles w/out a timer. Are humans extra vulnerable?
  • Yes, we found out also that they need to be over a certain size to have enough thermal mass to heat and cool more evenly. A good size takes around 2 minutes at 1500W. We use them daily, but only kept a couple of the small ones for cooling injuries.

Pro tip if you're making them: either use a cover slip or make it easy to replace the rice if it gets wet. Old jeans are excellent for this.

  • IR heat lamps sold as medical devices have timers, but pet stores sell them for reptiles w/out a timer. Are humans extra vulnerable?
  • Our household heat-the-body methods:

    • a 'heat dish' aka a parabolic heater, about 1000 watts directed into a cone of near infrared
    • microwaveable warmer bags filled with rice, hand stitched into different sizes
    • lap blankets and clothing
    • hot water bottles
    • tea

The heat dish costs about $100, but we bought a second one used for $20. No timer!! It gets used all winter as medical therapy but also just comfort. Radiant heat is cozy.

The heat bags are generally replacing the hot water bottles here, they are smaller and more portable and some will fit in pockets or a hoodie belly pouch, and good for warming the bed too. Microwaving is energy efficient.

  • Ford and Musk. They made cars. They backed fascists.
  • Yeah way back I interviewed early auto worker labour activists and they all talked about how foremen would surprise inspect worker homes and schedule people based on asshole judgements or bribes. Just constant bullshit and meddling until unionization.

He doesn't rely on charisma, slick production, or sensationalism, even if he has ti play the algorithm game. Examine his extensive channel on youtube.

  • Compact, low-power NAS on a €500 budget - Advice needed!
  • Used server is a noisy solution for a living space. No server closet. Fortunately it's not a heavy use scenario so low power also means low noise, but also a consumer box will blend in with furniture better. A small form factor used business class machine will likely fit the requirements better.

  • You mean like SNW which is peppered with regular jokes about the captain's appearance, especially hair? Especially the musical episode where the Klingons aggressively sing and dance "why you only call me / when you got your problems". Took that one pretty far.
