How do you envision Solarpunk Music?
  • Oh thanks for sharing, hadn't actually thought of checking if there was a community for this yet!

  • What file format do you store your media in?
  • Yeah I simply wasnt aware of this, thought it was smart to change to the latest standards - but comments here have pointed out that its not worth chaning, plus it will change itself over time. Thanks anyways!

  • How do you envision Solarpunk Music?

Am curious if Solarpunk music is a thing or not yet? If it is please do share some links to tracks to check out, am very cruious. If it isnt a thing yet, what type of music do you imagined it would be like? I found this on the Tubes, which is very relaxing, ambiance type of music. This is personally the type of music I have in mind when thinking solarpunk.

  • What file format do you store your media in?
  • Thanks again for the addtitional insights on this! I was indeed planning up picking up an Intel Arc 310 or a 380 later on as they are super cheap and seem to be excellent at hardware transcoding :)

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • I live in Scandinavia so ebay isn't much of an option for us really. Also prefer to use lesser big-corp when buying tech, while more expensive usually worth it due to better warranty and customer service. But thanks for the suggestion nonetheless!

  • What file format do you store your media in?
  • Sounds good, thanks for letting me know. I'll pass on the word :)

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • I'll buy it used if it has been properly checked by another vendor before sold again. Otherwise I wont.

  • Thanks, this answered pretty much all I was curious about. Appriciate it!

  • What file format do you store your media in?
  • Oh, I was not aware of this at all, thanks for letting me know :)

  • What file format do you store your media in?

    Hello! I recently listened to a podcast that talked about how storing media files in .av1 format is very efficient and storage-friendly. I've been storing my files in .mkv format, but now I'm considering using Handbrake or a similar service to convert all my video files to .av1 if it's more compressed than .mkv. So;

    • What format do you store your media?
    • What is the optimal way of storing media?
    • Do you use handbrake or similar services (feel free to suggest) to convert media files?

How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • Wasn't sure if that mattered or not in the case of Unraid. Had a feeling that only counted for the size of the disk. Just trying to make sure im not buying an expensive 10TB that I wont be able to use :P

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • Thanks for all the input and feedback - really appriciate it :) I still have quite the way to go to learn some of what these terms are. I have one PCI-e card for expanding the amount of Sata ports, wether is a cheapo card or not im not entierly sure(got it secondhand via a package deal), but have been using it for half a year now without any issues :)

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • Thanks for the tips! I dought I'll be going higher that 50TB at max. Would SAS still be nessecary for that you reccon?

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • That is indeed my current issue haha, was not aware of that when I got into this; so currently have 10TB in parity and only use 3TB for my storage... So wanna get most of out of that parity by buying another disk.

  • How much does it matter what type of harddisk i buy for my server?
  • Thanks for this, will read up and check out the links!

Hello, I'm relatively new to self-hosting and recently started using Unraid, which I find fantastic! I'm now considering upgrading my storage capacity by purchasing either an 8TB or 10TB hard drive. I'm exploring both new and used options to find the best deal. However, I've noticed that prices vary based on the specific category of hard drive (e.g., Seagate's IronWolf for NAS or Firecuda for gaming). I'm unsure about the significance of these different categories. Would using a gaming or surveillance hard drive impact the performance of my NAS setup?

Thanks for any tips and clarifications! 🌻

Randomly getting Notion email, after having deleted my account years ago...

Welp I guess this is the perfect example of companies not deleting your credentials and account info when asking for it... I deleted my Notion account several years ago. And completely randomly today got an email from them about data retention, assuming this is one of those "important" emails they have to send out. Sadly, years ago I wasnt using email-aliases like I am today, so still stuck with them having my email. Fuck I hate this so much. Thought I'd just share this lesson, use alises my friends!

FreshRSS how to force articles not load in full length - (It's FOSS)

    Hello!

Recently started selfhosting FreshRSS - and while it is really good, i have a few hicks with some of the feeds im fetching from, for instance Its Foss. As seen in the extremely long screenshot below(Picture2), to illustrate what I mean, the feed is extremely cluttered with addtional small icons and pictures. Just to clarify, this is the default view - I have not clicked to expand it or whatnot.

While I normally dont mind this, the feeds from Its Foss are always loading in at full length, e.g. the full article - and they are quite lengthy. Even though my settings are set to not unfold by default; !

Other articles who only have a title, picture and first sentence of the post, see Picture1. Is there a way to force articles not loading at full? I have a vague memory of somone linking a RSS filter tool a while back but not able to find back to it, and not sure it solves what I am looking for. Or have I just configured my settings wrong, and not able to find the setting that makes It's foss load in full?

    Let me know :)

How do you store your grounded coffee?

Hiya, just quickly wondering how people store their coffee? Mine is in a tin box I got second hand, cos I thought it looked nice. Any rules regarding storing grounded coffee? I don't store much at the time, it's just if I grind a little too much and what not. I'm assuming the general thumb rule for this is to store it in a closed container.

Feel free to share pics of your containers 🌻

Edit: My grinder doesn't allow for selective ground mode, but a new grinder is defo on the list! Seems like keeping them as beans for as long as possible - is the way.

My /var/tmp folder is endlessly stacking up on "container_images_storage_xxxxxxxxxx" folders?

The issue at hand: My /var/tmp folder is stacking up on literary hundreds of folders called "container_images_storage_xxxxxxxxxx", where the x's present a random number. Each folder contains the following files called 1, 2 and 3 as seen in thumbnail. Each folder seems to increase in size too, as the lowest I can see is the size of 142.2 MiB, but the highest 2.1GB. This is a problem as it is taking up all my disk space, and even if I do delete them, they come back the next day... I believe this has something to do with podman, but I'm really not quite sure. All I use the PC for is browsing and gaming.

Is there a way to figure out where a file or folder is coming from on Linux? I've tried stat and file, but neither gave me any worthwhile information AFAIK. Would really appreciate some help to figure what causes this, I am still new to the Linux desktop and have no idea what is causing this issue. I am on atomic desktop, using Bazzite:latest.

Would Lemmy Benefit from Implementing Polls?

A popular way of dealing with discussions, and familiar to most people, I assume. As far as I see it, adding a poll system to Lemmy is a good way to enhance user engagement. I'm not really aware if this has been a topic before or not, tried looking it up but didn't see much juice on the topic, so thought I'd spark it up.

Personally would like to see polls, but I'm sure there are people who don't want it too. Let me know your thoughts 🌻

Trying to understand Consent Forms, Cookies and Third-Party Vendors

Yo peeps, I'm currently looking into TCF Vendors, Ad partners and their whole corporate greed hellhole of tracking. I am writing a paper on this, and would like for everything to be factually correct. However, I am struggling to understand one particular part of this "transparency framework" and hope someone can help me clarify on cookie-duration.

As seen in the first thumbnail, the cookie duration is listed as 180 days. However, upon selecting > Storage Details, each cookie is displayed in further detail. In this detailed section, there are additional cookies with duration as high as 1825 days, not 180... So which is it? Currently, I'm (obviously) assuming the worst, as in, it being 1825 and not 180 days. There are additional cookies on this list, see spoiler below, that have cookies with the duration of 180 days. Why are the cookies with the highest duration listed on the first page? And if the answer is that "it would look worse", then they also have cookies with lower amount of days than 180 that could have been used. There are multiple cookies with different durations, do all of them count?

    !

If needed here is a spolier that includes all the cookies in detail from the Exactag GmbH vendor.

Question regarding use of Android/Google API usage.

Hi, reaching out here, as I assume and hope that this community is the one that has the better knowledge on the use of API keys.

I'm currently investigating a couple of free VPNs, e.g. APKs, for my thesis. I've stumbled upon many of these VPNs leaving API keys, auth key etc.. hardcoded into the app. However, one API key in particular is the one used by android.gms.internal.ads. This key is present in multiple different apps, not just VPN apps, but other complete random apps. Now, I am no programmer, and that's why I'm asking for some pointers to get a better understanding of this. How come this API-key, belonging to a Google Service, is present in so many different apps? I've tried to look it up, and found another malware report from 2021, that highlight finding the same API-key.

    The API Key is: AIzaSyDRKQ9d6kfsoZT2lUnZcZnBYvH69HExNPE

    Code example key being found in; java public final class zzadt { private static zzacy<String> zzdfw = zzacy.zzh("gads:safe_browsing:api_key", " AIzaSyDRKQ9d6kfsoZT2lUnZcZnBYvH69HExNPE ");

Is there a good reason for this API key being reused so many times? Appreciate any pointers or help!
