Is there an appropriate long-form discussion forum software for orgs?
  • As long as the people using your home server aren't messaging people or chatting in rooms from other home servers (aka you've disabled federation) and you can trust your cloud provider not to snoop around, yea, it's a fairly decent solution. Even with disk encryption like LUKS or your file system's built-in encryption, if your cloud provider wanted, they could just dump the memory of your VM and find the password/encryption keys that way.

  • Is there an appropriate long-form discussion forum software for orgs?
  • Even if it's open-source and free software, unless they're hosting it themselves, Loomio still has access/control over all your data. Also, hosting it yourself is just much cheaper. Looking at their website, the cheapest plan they have is still $300/year and you can only have 30 members, which is outrageous in my opinion. You can get a cheap cloud server with decent storage space that you could host it yourself on for like $10/month and have unlimited users.

'Interactive Unified Portable Operating System') is a Unix-like operating system developed in the Soviet Union. It is derived from Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) Unix.

It's development was initiated in the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy in Moscow in 1982, and development continued in cooperation from other institutes, and commercialized by DEMOS Co-operative which employed most key contributors to DEMOS and to its earlier alternative, MNOS (a clone of Version 6 Unix). MNOS and DEMOS version 1.x were gradually merged from 1986 until 1990, leaving the joint OS, DEMOS version 2.x, with support for different Cyrillic script character encoding (charsets) (KOI-8 and U-code, used in DEMOS 1 and MNOS, respectively).

Initially it was developed for SM-4 (a PDP-11/40 clone) and SM-1600. Later it was ported to Elektronika-1082, BESM, ES EVM, clones of VAX-11 (SM-1700), and several other platforms, including PC/XT, Elektronika-85 (a clone of DEC Professional), and several Motorola 68020-based microcomputers.

The development of DEMOS effectively ceased in 1991, when the second project of the DEMOS team, RELCOM, took priority.

An archive of the DEMOS source code can found here: https://github.com/bpr97050/DEMOS There's some interesting comments and mailing list archives in that repository as well. :)

  • I wouldn't really worry about it, I got mine from Aliexpress and they've been going strong for a couple of years. Everything on every other web store is drop shipped from Aliexpress these days anyway. If you have pets, try to keep them out of reach/away from the ground so they don't chew on the little strands of wire that the lights are attached to and you will be fine!

  • Yea, I'm fine, it's a temporary living arrangement but no idea how long I have to put up with it so. emilie-shrug I just try to zone out of it and listen to music or something and avoid interactions with her because i-love-not-thinking I've been starting to think if me coming out a couple of years ago was a mistake because of this, when I originally did it she seemed fine with it which was surprising because I didn't really know what to expect because I'd never heard her go on these kinds of tirades before. I guess something flipped in her brain and now she's just showing her true colors.

Listening to my mom go on and on about how queer and trans folk need to be thrown into mental institutions because "they want to get extra privileges that 'normal' people don't even have to accommodate their disgusting lifestyles" and other things like "they're trying to rewrite our language by saying we're not allowed to say things like queer or [insert slur], like they're just words grow up!". • Chinese plane designed to travel twice as fast as Concorde completes test flight
  • Yea, as cool as this would be I have some serious doubts about this, especially since they said they want to put passengers on this thing? The SR-71 reached a max speed of mach 3.4, but it was flying at extremely high altitudes where the air is very thin and the pilot had to wear what's essentially a space suit. Not to mention the plane being made entirely of titanium because during flight the surface temperature of the plane's body was so hot, that any other metal would start to lose it's structural soundness. I have no doubts that technology has massively improved since the 60s, but I don't think it's improved to the point to where we're going to be flying at mach 4 from Beijing to New York like they say. If they end up showing it off later down the line and it can actually do that, well holy shit.

It really sucks being poor and not being able to get a job. I have no money to go and do things, I don't have a car or any way to get around so even if I had money to do things I still wouldn't be able to, I am stuck in a meh housing arrangement, and I'm lonely as ever because social anxiety is strong and I shut down in even the smallest social interactions. I'm a mess.

  • How often should you reboot a production webserver?
  • I only really restart if there's a kernel update because I'm too lazy to do all the setup for live patching. If there's an update for something like Nginx, I restart the service after updating it. I try to stay on top of updates, especially security ones for obvious reasons.

    server: nginx/1.22.1

I also personally disable this, it's not really too important, but it's a little security by obscurity thing. Makes people scanning the internet for a specific (possibly vulnerable) version of Nginx a little bit harder.

    Free private e-mail provider recommendations?

I know a lot of people suggest Proton and it seems mostly fine, but their free plan does not offer SMTP access which I use for quite a few things and I don't like the idea of paying for an e-mail service because I'm broke and I don't like the idea of potentially losing my e-mail account because I couldn't afford it when it comes time to renew it.

There's Riseup which seems really nice, but it seems you need an invite from an existing user which is also a bummer for me. I took a quick glance at their site and it seems you can't request an account anymore either because they had an issue with spam accounts in the past. :(

Is there anything else that maybe I'm unaware of? or maybe someone here even has a Riseup account that'd be willing to invite me?

Long story short: That pop-up you get when you open Firefox (or whatever other browser) for the first time asking you if you want to make it your default browser won't work anymore. They're forcing you to go through their convoluted control panel where you have to change it like 20 times for each file extension.

Daily reminder to update your BIOS for security patches
arstechnica.com Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

UEFIs booting Windows and Linux devices can be hacked by malicious logo images.

Just about every Windows and Linux device vulnerable to new LogoFAIL firmware attack

The news about this specific vulnerability is a bit old by now, but it doesn't hurt to drop a reminder that you should update your BIOS frequently to prevent yourself from falling victim to other vulnerabilities later down the line. BIOS updates can also improve performance as well (or make it worse, cough, Spectre mitigations) in a few scenarios.

If you have a laptop, it's probably as easy as just downloading your manufacturer's tool from their website, clicking a few buttons, restarting, and you should be set or your manufacturer might provide these updates thru Windows' update system which in that case you don't need to download any additional software.

If you're on a desktop however, most of the time this involves you downloading a file, throwing it on a USB stick, and updating it from the BIOS screen or by pressing a button on the back of the motherboard.

Either way, you're probably only a [insert search engine name here] search away from finding a guide on how to do it for your specific motherboard/device.

A few words of caution though: If you're on a desktop without a battery backup it's probably wise to only do these updates when you have high confidence that your power isn't going to drop during the update. If you lose power during one of these updates, recovery is not a fun task (unless your motherboard is fancy and has a button to recover from these kinds of scenarios) and your motherboard basically becomes a cool looking paper weight unless you want to flash the chip manually, which is possible but is kind of annoying to do and requires the right tools (but they're pretty cheap from Alibaba or whatever)

Anyway, rant over. Make sure you keep your computers up-to-date comrades, it's always worth spending the half an hour or so it takes to update everything on your computer so you can have some extra peace of mind.
