Tesla Starts Cybertruck Production Two Years Behind Schedule
  • Beats the shit out of me. But now corporations are being treated as people so maybe it's a welfare subsidy? šŸ˜†

  • LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for ā€œHome as a Serviceā€
  • Yeah, in my facetiousness, I forgot that I actually do something remarkably similar in terms of a sewer bill.

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • Thanks, mate! I'll take all I can get.

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • Yes, I did get the processor off of eBay for 75 bucks and the motherboard for 150. That I figured was a score and it shipped from Taiwan so it didn't quite take forever to get here. The drives, case, RAM, and low-end GPU I got from the flea markets.

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • It's a Proxmox server that's well under subscribed and utilized. I currently use it as a remote back-up for my brother's business computer and the family's various machines. It has one Arch Linux VM for that purpose. Another Arch Linux VM has two docker containers for running Mastodon and Lemmy.

I want to do more with it but right now it's time for me to buckle down and actually take some steps toward bettering my career because I am sick of being a senior Windows desktop support technician. I really want to do Linux/BSD systems administration or DevOps stuff. I hate feeling like I have to learn under the gun but, at this point, thinking about work on Monday is making me physically ill. The only relief will be knowing that there is an end to this tunnel.

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • A lot of the components I actually bought at computer swap meets/flea markets. Some vendors had corporate cast-off hard drives and all kinds of good deals.

  • LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for ā€œHome as a Serviceā€
  • Mark my words we are soon going to have to subscribe to our toilets. You get one flush a day for free. Save money by subscribing to the flush-lite which gives you 2 additional flushes. If you choose not to subscribe, you will be charged 2.99 for each flush beyond the first one.

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • Nice! I built my server with a brand new tower case and bunch of second hand components. It has a 2016-era Xeon E5-2690 with 128GB of ECC RAM and 12 TB of storage in a RAID z1 config. I built for less than 500 bucks.

  • What's a big tech product that you actually find useful?
  • Honestly I cannot think of any right now because I am so fed up with corporate proprietary crap.

  • LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for ā€œHome as a Serviceā€
  • Well, point of fact, if you have a mortgage, your landlord becomes the bank anyway. You only get to own it after 30 years, and that is, if you haven't needed to take out a home equity loan or other line of credit against your home to make necessary repairs.

  • LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for ā€œHome as a Serviceā€
  • If corporations are gonna be greedy. It's time to steal some of that value back for us. Huzzah!

  • How it Started, vs how it's going.
  • Hey that's a pretty good setup! It's a lot better than mine! LOL.

  • LG to offer subscriptions for already purchased appliances and televisions, evolving into a provider for ā€œHome as a Serviceā€
  • This is fucking ridiculous! Do you have to buy a subscription in order to use the appliance? If so, it seems to me that this would constitute unfair trade practice. Some shit just does not belong on the internet. Can you imagine the serious and life threatening situation that could develop, if say, somebody hacked into a system and turned gas stoves on and a fire developed? No, it's time to draw the line at IoT!

  • Heat makes you tired
  • Lately there's been an awful lot of inescapable heat.

  • Request: file-sharing service
  • You've got Pixelfed which is similar to Instagram.

  • What are you using for photo storage and organization?
  • Nextcloud works well for general files. Immich is the way to go specifically for photo storing. It's got a whole lot of added features.

  • Request: file-sharing service
  • If your requirements don't need federation, then look into nextcloud.

  • Should I bother learning Podman?

I am already fairly comfortable using docker and its tool set. Is the tide shifting towards Podman? Should I start learning how to use Podman? Thanks in advance.

    WebPush Desktop Notifications

Are WebPush desktop notifications currently implemented in Lemmy? I run my own instance and I am not getting any. I have given the lemmy website permissions to send notifications but none are coming through. I am running Lemmy behind a reverse proxy and I've put the NGINX headers in to allow for WebSockets. What else could I be missing? Thanks in advance.

    Recommendations on instance maintenance?

My database is already getting to the size of almost 1GB so it made me think about some questions I have regarding maintenance of my Lemmy instance:

    • What cleanup is recommended on the database?
    • What is the default length of time that pictrs holds onto its cached data and how to clear the cache?
    • Any other recommendations you can think of?

Question about Cinnamon and Desktop Notifications

I am running the latest version of Cinnamon on my Arch desktop with the latest version of Firefox. However, I am not receiving notifications from websites that I have expressly enabled notifications on. For example, my Mastodon instance doesn't give me notifications when something has been favorited or boosted. For that matter neither does my Lemmy instance. I have given these instances the proper permissions to allow notifications and still nothing. This happens with some other websites but it is hit and miss.

As I am not so familiar with the innards of Cinnamon, would somebody be so kind as to point me in the right direction?

    Thanks in advance!

Which learning path makes the most amount of sense?

I just found out about The Odin Project, a self-paced online course to learn full stack web development. There are two paths: one is Ruby on Rails and the other is full JavaScript and nodejs. I am leaning more towards Ruby but I wanted to get some more opinions from folks in the field.

    Email self-hosting

As the title reads, I really want to begin hosting my own email server again. I'm sick of the poor quality of the service providers out there. Damnit all I want/need is a reliable IMAP/SMTP provider. I spent 3 hours getting off of Hostinger and on to Zoho. I just hope Zoho won't suck. It's great for now but we'll see.

Is the prevailing advice still not to bother with self-hosting email?

What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

I am wondering what kind of career moves I have available to me because I am over the bullshit of desktop support. I have been brushing up on my Linux skills, learning docker, and doing a whole bunch of networking-related things. At this point, I am 46 years old. Would it benefit me to go back to school to learn a skill to help me advance beyond this role? I just don't know what to do. There are many options, none of them truly low cost and all of them involving a significant amount of risk.

I get that there is no avoiding risk when making a career change so late in life. I was looking at training for Java or Oracle and it isn't cheap. Maybe given my experience I could teach A+ or Network+? I don't know. I'll welcome any ideas right now.

    Liftoff app

I'm really liking the Liftoff app for Lemmy. I just discovered that I can increase the indent so comment replies are easy to read.

Is Lemmy planning on adding commands for maintenance tasks?

As my question reads I am curious if the Lemmy documentation gurus are putting together any recommended instance maintenance tasks. Also are the devs going to implement something similar to Mastodon which has the tootctl command and some various cache maintenance and cleanup capability. Thanks in advance. šŸ˜€

    Building home page feed

Other than subscribing to communities, how else can I expand my feed some? I just started working with Lemmy over the weekend and I'd like to see comments from more than just the communities I subscribe to so that I can learn about others.

    Looking for a recommendation

I am currently using Hugo as a static site generator for my blog. It's not bad but rather limited. Does anybody know about something that would be equally as lightweight but offer some more flexibility. I just don't know what is out there so anything you guys could come up with would be appreciated.
